The poll surveyed 2,585 verified Amazon professionals in the United States; it did not show that 73% of Amazon’s workforce resigned or ultimately left.
What the September 2024 Blind poll found
Blind’s poll, as reported by Ars Technica on September 25, 2024, found that 73% of surveyed Amazon professionals were considering looking for another job due to the return-to-office (RTO) policy. The poll also found that 80% knew someone considering job hunting, and 32% knew someone who had already quit in response to the impending five-day week.
Those figures describe what respondents said, not verified workforce-wide job-search or resignation totals. In particular, “considering looking for another job” is not the same as applying, receiving an offer, or leaving Amazon.
Who was surveyed and when
Blind surveyed 2,585 verified Amazon professionals in the United States from September 17 through 19, 2024. The poll used yes-or-no questions and began the day after Amazon announced its policy. The reported sample details do not establish that respondents were a probability sample representative of Amazon’s entire workforce, so the 73% should be attributed to Blind respondents rather than generalized to all Amazon employees.

What Amazon announced
On September 16, 2024, CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon expected employees to return to the office five days a week beginning January 2, 2025, outside extenuating circumstances or an approved Remote Work Exception. In Amazon’s announcement, Jassy said the company believed in-person work would help strengthen culture, collaboration, brainstorming, invention, teaching and learning. Those are Amazon’s stated reasons for the policy, not independent proof of its effects.

The announcement also noted that before the pandemic not everyone was in an office five days each week. It listed examples such as illness, a household emergency, customer or partner travel, isolated coding work, and a Remote Work Exception approved through the employee’s S-team leader. Amazon said locations that had used assigned desks before the pandemic, including Puget Sound and Arlington, would return to that arrangement; locations that had used agile desks, including much of Europe, would continue doing so.
A separate survey later measured applications and expected departures
The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) conducted a different online survey of current Amazon corporate employees from November 4 through 26, 2024. SOC said it recruited respondents through online discussion forums and social media used by Amazon corporate workers, as well as targeted digital advertising. Its December 2024 survey report included 1,065 respondents. These results should not be merged with Blind’s September poll: the samples, dates, distribution methods and questions differed.

In the SOC survey, 48% of respondents said they had already applied to jobs outside Amazon, while 68% said they were somewhat or very likely to leave within the next year. More than eight in ten expected the policy to reduce their personal productivity; five in six disagreed that Amazon could be trusted to keep its promises and commitments; and more than three quarters said they would not recommend a friend apply to Amazon. These are respondents’ reported experiences and expectations, not audited company-wide counts or proof that the policy caused a particular outcome.
Fast Company’s December 19, 2024 account of the SOC survey reported further workplace and subgroup responses. Among respondents, 81% expected coworker relationships to stay the same or worsen; 45% said they were not assigned to the same office as their manager; 38% worked alongside only a small fraction of their team; 23% had moved at least once to comply with an earlier RTO policy; and 26% expected they would be forced to move under the five-day policy.

Fast Company also reported that, among respondents who cited childcare or caregiving duties, 93% said the new policy would make those responsibilities harder. It said 57% of caregivers had applied to outside roles, compared with 43% of other workers. Disabled workers made up about 21% of SOC respondents; among disabled respondents who had sought a work-from-home exemption under the earlier RTO requirement, 45% said their request was denied. These percentages retain the survey’s respondent and subgroup qualifications; they are not workforce-wide rates.

- It records sentiment at particular moments. Blind asked about job-search consideration shortly after the September announcement; SOC surveyed corporate workers in November.
- It does not establish that most Amazon employees left. The 73% Blind result concerns consideration, while SOC’s applications and likelihood-to-leave figures come from a separate respondent survey.
- The surveys are not directly interchangeable. They covered different populations, used different recruitment and question methods, and measured different outcomes.
- It does not establish the policy’s present-day status. The surveys and Jassy’s announcement document events in 2024. Amazon Jobs’ application FAQ directs candidates to check role-specific RTO guidance and whether a role is remote, but the available information does not establish one universal rule for every role today.
What job seekers should check before making a decision
For anyone evaluating an Amazon position—or weighing a move because of office requirements—the relevant terms can depend on the particular job and location. Amazon Jobs advises candidates to review the RTO guidance for the role and confirm whether it is designated remote. For personal-finance planning, that distinction matters: a possible job change can affect income continuity, commuting costs, relocation expenses, benefits and the timing of a household budget. Treat survey responses as evidence of worker sentiment, not as a forecast of your own job prospects or Amazon’s future staffing.
