City records published much later describe a 364-acre campus with three data-center buildings constructed between 2012 and 2024 and three more approved. A county update dated December 2025 also listed the Apple Data Center among larger projects under construction, but that entry does not verify the site’s status today.
What Apple was building in 2013
Jordan Novet’s October 16, 2013, report for Data Center Knowledge described Apple building a data center in Prineville and said the facility was expected to support iCloud. It documented work on the site and a nearby power substation. The report discussed data halls, or “modules,” and possible expansion, but those possibilities were not proof that later buildings were completed.

That account is a snapshot of construction and public information in 2013—not a description of the campus as it stands now. The report said Apple had disclosed little about the project at the time; that observation should not be read as a current assessment of Apple’s disclosures.

What later local records say about the campus
City of Prineville planning materials provide a later account of campus growth. The February 2025 Planning Commission packet described a 364-acre Apple campus and distinguished buildings already constructed from those approved for development.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | What the record says | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Campus area | 364 acres | City of Prineville Planning Commission packet, February 2025 |
| Buildings constructed | Three, built between 2012 and 2024 | City of Prineville Planning Commission packet, February 2025 |
| Additional buildings approved | Three | City of Prineville Planning Commission packet, February 2025 |
The city’s January 2026 draft economic-opportunities analysis repeats the acreage and building counts. Approval is not the same as completion, so the three approved buildings should not be counted as built based on these records alone.
What the latest dated construction entry establishes
A Crook County Community Development Activity Update dated December 3, 2025, listed “Apple Data Center” among larger projects under construction. The update appeared in materials for the county commissioners’ January 28, 2026, work session. It is evidence of a construction-status entry as of that update, not a live status check or confirmation that work continued afterward.

What Apple says about water stewardship
Apple’s April 17, 2024, newsroom statement says its Prineville data center became the first data center certified to the Alliance for Water Stewardship International Water Stewardship Standard in 2021. That is Apple’s reported certification milestone; it does not state the site’s water consumption or establish whether its certification remains current. Apple’s statement quoted Lisa Jackson, its vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives: “Clean energy and water are foundational to healthy communities and essential building blocks for a responsible business.”
What remains unclear from these records
The cited city, county, 2013 trade-press, and Apple materials do not establish the campus’s present construction or completion status, what services it currently hosts, its facility-level power demand or power mix, its water use, cooling design, jobs, annual local tax contribution, or current tax-incentive terms. They also do not identify a general contractor or confirm that all three approved buildings have been built. Those details may appear in other public records, but they are not established by the sources cited here.

For readers evaluating the local economic or environmental effects, it is important not to treat acreage, approved buildings, a dated construction listing, or a certification as substitutes for operating data. For example, a water-stewardship certification is not a disclosed water-volume figure, and an approved building is not a completed one.
