Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025, as its new entry-level iPhone and successor in the lineup to the iPhone SE. The 128GB model launched at $599 in the U.S. It replaced the SE’s small screen and Home button with a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, USB-C and an A18 chip, but left out features such as MagSafe and an ultrawide camera.
That launch price is now historical buying context: as of August 18, 2026, Apple sells the iPhone 17e from $599 with 256GB, while its U.S. Certified Refurbished store lists the iPhone 16e from $419 when available. The right comparison today is usually refurbished 16e versus new 17e—not the 16e’s original price in isolation.
What Apple announced—and when
Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025, positioning it as the most affordable member of the iPhone 16 family. Preorders opened February 21, and the phone went on sale February 28. It came in black or white, with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. Apple’s announcement and launch pricing are documented in its iPhone 16e announcement.
| Storage | U.S. launch price in 2025 |
|---|---|
| 128GB | $599 |
| 256GB | $699 |
| 512GB | $899 |
These were U.S. prices before sales tax. The box included a USB-C charging cable, not a power adapter. Trade-in credits and carrier promotions were separate from the standard price; offers advertised as free or heavily discounted could require an eligible trade-in, installment plan, line activation or other conditions. Check the total payment commitment rather than comparing monthly advertising alone. Apple described launch trade-in and carrier offers on its retail availability page.

How the 16e changed the iPhone SE formula
Earlier SE models paired a relatively old design with a newer processor. The 16e took a different approach: it moved Apple’s entry-level phone into a modern, all-screen design and simplified the feature set of the numbered iPhone family. That is a strategic shift inferred from the products, not a claim that Apple formally declared the SE name permanently retired.
- The display grew from the SE 3’s 4.7-inch LCD to a 6.1-inch OLED screen.
- The Home button and Touch ID gave way to Face ID and a notch.
- Lightning was replaced by USB-C.
- The phone joined the numbered iPhone 16 family rather than keeping the SE name.
- Apple Intelligence support became part of the entry-level pitch, subject to software, language and regional availability.
The result is not a small, inexpensive SE in a new shell. It is a larger modern iPhone with some premium-family features and several deliberate omissions.
iPhone 16e specifications and what they mean
| Feature | iPhone 16e | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED | A larger, higher-contrast screen than the SE 3’s LCD, but not a compact-phone experience. |
| Processor and graphics | A18 chip with a four-core GPU | Modern performance and Apple Intelligence compatibility; the GPU configuration is less capable than the regular iPhone 16’s. |
| Cellular modem | Apple-designed C1, Apple’s first in-house iPhone modem | A significant move for Apple’s modem strategy. Apple emphasized efficiency; the branding alone does not establish that reception or speed will beat competing modems in every network and location. |
| Rear camera | 48MP Fusion, marketed as a 2-in-1 system | High-resolution main-camera images and a 2x optical-quality crop, but no separate ultrawide lens. |
| Front camera and biometrics | 12MP TrueDepth camera; Face ID | No Touch ID sensor or physical Home button. |
| Controls and connector | Action button; USB-C | A customizable hardware button and a port shared with many newer accessories. |
| Safety and software | 5G, Apple Intelligence compatibility, Emergency SOS via satellite, Crash Detection and satellite Roadside Assistance where available | Feature availability varies by software, language, location and service conditions. |
| Colors and storage | Black or white; 128GB, 256GB or 512GB | Fewer finish choices than the regular iPhone 16. Storage needs depend on photos, games, downloads and how much data you migrate. |
Apple’s iPhone comparison page lays out differences between the 16e and the other iPhone 16 models. Cellular bands and physical-SIM or eSIM configurations can vary by market, so confirm the specific regional model before buying.

iPhone 16e versus iPhone SE 3
The SE 3 launched in March 2022 at $429 in the U.S. for 64GB, with 128GB and 256GB configurations also offered. The 16e’s $599 starting price bought a substantial redesign and newer features, but was $170 above the SE 3’s starting price while doubling base storage. Apple’s SE announcement records its original configurations and price.
| Feature | iPhone 16e | iPhone SE 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | February 2025 | March 2022 |
| U.S. starting price at launch | $599 for 128GB | $429 for 64GB |
| Display | 6.1-inch OLED | 4.7-inch LCD |
| Biometrics | Face ID | Touch ID |
| Connector | USB-C | Lightning |
| Rear camera | 48MP main camera with 2x optical-quality crop | 12MP wide camera |
| Chip | A18 | A15 Bionic |
| Apple Intelligence | Supported, subject to availability | Not supported |
| Satellite Emergency SOS | Supported where available | Not supported |
| MagSafe | Not supported | Not supported |
| Physical Home button | No | Yes |
For an SE 3 owner, the upgrade is compelling if a larger OLED screen, Face ID, USB-C, newer camera hardware and current-generation performance matter more than Touch ID, a compact body or lower spending. If the SE still meets your needs, its lower cost to keep using it may be more valuable than paying for features you will not use.
What the 16e gives up
No MagSafe or Qi2
The 16e supports wireless charging, but it does not have native MagSafe or Qi2 support. Those are not interchangeable terms: wireless charging alone does not provide MagSafe’s magnetic alignment and accessory ecosystem. A magnetic case may attach to some accessories, but it does not turn the phone into a native MagSafe device or guarantee MagSafe charging speeds. This omission affects more than chargers: magnetic car mounts, wallets, stands, battery packs and docks may be less convenient or require a compatible case.

No ultrawide camera
The “2-in-1” description refers to the 48MP main camera’s high-resolution output and 2x optical-quality crop, not two physical rear lenses. Without an ultrawide camera, you have less flexibility for landscapes, architecture, group photos and close-range framing. The regular iPhone 16 has a broader camera system, as shown in Apple’s model comparison.
Notch, fewer colors and less graphics capability
The 16e uses a notch rather than the Dynamic Island found on the regular iPhone 16, lacks Camera Control, and has a less capable GPU configuration. It also came in only black and white. These differences matter most to people who value interactive display features, advanced photography or graphics-heavy games; they are less important for messaging, browsing and everyday apps.

Apple said the 16e delivered the best battery life ever in a 6.1-inch iPhone and claimed up to six hours longer video playback than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours longer than all generations of iPhone SE. Those are Apple’s stated video-playback comparisons, not a promise of a particular number of hours in ordinary daily use. Brightness, gaming, cellular versus Wi-Fi use, weak signal and battery condition all affect actual endurance. MacRumors’ review also treated battery life as a strength, but independent testing results depend on test conditions.

The C1 matters because it is Apple’s first in-house modem in an iPhone and marks a strategic move toward designing more of its own cellular technology. Apple emphasized power efficiency. That does not prove it is universally faster or more reliable than Qualcomm hardware: network coverage, signal strength, firmware and location shape connectivity. For a buyer, dependable service on your carrier and battery performance in your own routine matter more than the modem’s name.
Was the $599 launch price good value against iPhone 16?
At launch, the regular iPhone 16 started at $799, a $200 premium over the 16e. The lower price made the 16e the cheaper way to get an A18-family iPhone and Apple Intelligence compatibility, but it was still Apple’s entry-level phone—not a low-cost phone by the standards of the whole smartphone market.
| Choose the iPhone 16e if… | Pay more for the regular iPhone 16 if… |
|---|---|
| You value battery life, a simpler camera and a lower launch price. | You will use MagSafe or Qi2 accessories and charging. |
| You want an OLED iPhone with Face ID, USB-C and Apple Intelligence compatibility. | You want an ultrawide camera, more camera options and Camera Control. |
| You rarely take ultrawide shots and do not need Dynamic Island. | You value Dynamic Island, greater GPU capability or more color choices. |
At a $200 gap, the 16e was sensible for buyers who would not miss the omitted features. The regular 16 could be better long-term value for someone likely to use its camera flexibility and magnetic accessory ecosystem. Prices and availability change, so that launch comparison should not be treated as a current price quote. More on the feature trade-offs appears in MacRumors’ iPhone 16e versus iPhone 16 guide.

Who should consider the iPhone 16e?
- SE 2 or SE 3 owners ready for a modern design: especially if you want a larger OLED screen, Face ID, USB-C or Apple Intelligence compatibility.
- iPhone 11 or older owners: the design, chip and camera are a more substantial generational change, though you should compare current alternatives and prices.
- Practical users who do not need ultrawide photography: the single rear camera may be enough for everyday pictures.
- Buyers who do not rely on MagSafe accessories: the missing magnetic ecosystem is less of a sacrifice if you have not invested in it.
- Refurbished shoppers: a certified refurbished 16e can make more sense than its original launch price if its current price and condition suit your budget.
Who should skip it?
- Touch ID loyalists or small-phone users: the 16e has Face ID and a 6.1-inch body, not a Home button or compact SE format.
- MagSafe users and frequent ultrawide photographers: the hardware omissions directly affect their routines.
- Owners of an iPhone 13, 14 or 15 who are satisfied: an upgrade is harder to justify if you do not need Apple Intelligence or a specific hardware change.
- Shoppers who can afford a feature-rich alternative: compare the regular iPhone 16 or other current standard models before settling for the 16e’s omissions.
- Anyone shopping new in 2026: compare the current 17e’s storage and price before choosing an older generation.
What to buy in 2026: refurbished 16e or new 17e?
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17e as its current entry-level new model at $599 for 256GB and $799 for 512GB. That changes the original 16e calculation: the 17e offers twice the base storage at the 16e’s former 128GB launch price. Check Apple’s current iPhone 17e buying page for live availability and terms.
For the 16e specifically, Apple’s U.S. Certified Refurbished store listed 128GB at $419, 256GB at $509 and 512GB at $679 when available in August 2026. These observed prices and configurations are inventory-dependent, not guaranteed future prices. Apple states that certified refurbished iPhones include a new battery and outer shell, full functional testing, accessories, a new white box and the same one-year warranty as a new iPhone. Review the live refurbished iPhone 16e listings and Apple’s refurbishment and warranty details before purchase.
| Priority | Direction to compare |
|---|---|
| Lowest current Apple price for a new iPhone | iPhone 17e, listed from $599 for 256GB in the U.S. |
| Lowest price for an iPhone 16e | Apple Certified Refurbished 16e, from $419 for 128GB when listed in August 2026. |
| MagSafe or broader camera options at a similar refurbished price | Compare refurbished iPhone 15 inventory; Apple listed a 128GB model at $529 and a 256GB model at $619 when observed. |
| More features from the 16 generation | Compare refurbished iPhone 16 inventory; Apple listed 128GB at $619 when observed. |
| Lowering the cost of a new purchase | Request a live Apple Trade In quote; value depends on model, capacity, condition and current valuation. |
Refurbished stock and prices can change, and older models may have less remaining software-support runway than newer ones. Apple’s Trade In page provides a current estimate rather than a permanent credit schedule. A carrier deal can also change the effective cost, but compare the full installment and service obligations.
Verdict
The iPhone 16e was a substantial modernization of the SE idea, not simply a renamed SE and not an ultra-budget phone. At launch, $599 bought a larger OLED display, Face ID, USB-C, A18 performance and Apple Intelligence compatibility while sacrificing MagSafe and camera versatility. In 2026, buy one primarily when a certified refurbished price makes those trade-offs worthwhile; for a new entry-level iPhone, compare the 17e’s $599/256GB U.S. offer first.
