Apple is no longer merely considering Google Gemini. On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google confirmed a multiyear collaboration in which Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology will help underpin Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models. Apple controls the Siri product, operating-system integration and privacy architecture; this is not the consumer Gemini app replacing Siri.
At WWDC26 on June 8, Apple said the collaboration would support a more capable Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features. As of August 16, 2026, those capabilities remain subject to beta timing, supported hardware, language, regional and regulatory limits.

What changed from the original “may tap Gemini” report?
The headline began as a possibility, then became a confirmed partnership:
- March 2024: Reports said Apple was discussing licensing Google Gemini for some iPhone AI features while also considering OpenAI technology; no agreement had been finalized. Reuters coverage is available through Investing.com.
- November 5, 2025: Bloomberg reported that Apple was nearing a Gemini deal for a revamped Siri, mentioning a possible value of about $1 billion per year and a 1.2-trillion-parameter model. Apple and Google did not confirm those details: Bloomberg.
- January 12, 2026: The companies announced a multiyear collaboration: Google’s joint statement.
- June 8, 2026: Apple described its next-generation Apple Intelligence architecture as built in collaboration with Google Gemini models and announced Siri AI testing: Apple’s Apple Intelligence announcement.
Therefore, “may tap” is now outdated wording. The remaining uncertainty concerns implementation details, rollout and pricing—not whether a partnership exists.

What the partnership actually means
Apple says its next-generation Apple Foundation Models are custom-built in collaboration with Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple will integrate them into Apple Intelligence, processing requests on devices where possible and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute for more demanding workloads.
The most accurate description is that Google supplies important model and infrastructure technology while Apple owns the product experience. Apple has not publicly disclosed the precise split of model weights, training, fine-tuning, inference or cloud operations.

What the new Siri AI is expected to do
Apple’s dedicated Siri announcement describes a more conversational assistant with capabilities including:
- Understanding personal context across messages, email, photos and other permitted content.
- Awareness of what is on the screen.
- Answers to web questions and more natural follow-up conversations.
- A dedicated app for revisiting Siri conversations.
- Expanded Visual Intelligence and integrated writing tools.
Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence plans also cover Photos editing, Safari browsing tools, Image Playground, password-security improvements and more intelligent file and folder naming. These are Apple Intelligence features generally; Apple has not said that every one is directly generated by Gemini.
Does Gemini replace ChatGPT on Apple devices?
There is no public confirmation that ChatGPT integration is being eliminated. Apple previously allowed Siri to consult ChatGPT for some complicated requests and user-provided material such as photos and documents, as described in Reuters’ syndicated coverage.

The Google agreement concerns the foundation of next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. A separate Apple announcement would be needed to establish any change to ChatGPT access, extensions or user choice.
When will users get the new Siri?
Apple began developer testing on June 8, 2026, for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27. Apple planned a public beta through its beta software program the following month and said Siri AI would arrive as a beta later in 2026, initially for supported devices set to English. Wider access is tied to the iOS 27 software cycle and related releases, not guaranteed universal availability on a single date.
As of August 16, 2026, do not treat the final, stable version as universally available. Apple’s announcements use planned-availability and beta language: Siri AI announcement and WWDC26 availability details.

Apple’s iOS 27-generation list includes the following hardware for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI:
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPhone 16 models and later.
- iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPad models with M1 or later.
- MacBook Neo with A18 Pro and Mac models with M1 or later.
- Apple Vision Pro.
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.
- Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
An operating-system update alone does not make an older device compatible. Eligibility is also separate from language, region and feature-specific requirements. Apple’s stated list may change before final release: Apple’s compatibility announcement.

Privacy and cloud processing: what is known
Apple says the architecture uses on-device processing where possible and Private Cloud Compute for larger workloads, with Apple-controlled privacy and security mechanisms. That design can limit exposure compared with sending every request directly to a consumer chatbot.
However, Apple has not publicly answered every operational question about Google’s role. It has not fully specified:

- Which requests remain entirely on-device.
- Which requests use Apple-controlled Private Cloud Compute.
- Which workloads use Google cloud infrastructure.
- What information, if any, is shared with Google.
- Retention, auditing and training restrictions applicable to any Google-handled data.
- Whether users can disable individual cloud-based AI functions.
Accordingly, it is unsupported to say either that Google receives all Siri requests or that Google’s involvement has no privacy implications.
Language, regional and regulatory limits
Apple lists support for languages including English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Individual features can have narrower language support.
Apple said Siri AI would initially be a beta for supported devices set to English. It also stated that:

- Siri AI would initially not be available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch in the European Union because of the Digital Markets Act.
- Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU could access Siri AI when using a supported language.
- Apple Intelligence and Siri AI would not be available in China while Apple addresses regulatory requirements.
“Available” in the United States therefore does not mean available in every EU country, China, language or device configuration.

Will Apple charge for Gemini-powered Siri?
Apple presents the software features as part of its updates, but says some server-dependent functions have daily usage limits. Increased access is available with most iCloud+ plans, according to Apple’s WWDC26 announcement. That announcement does not provide a complete Gemini-specific price table.
A July 30, 2026 Axios report said Tim Cook indicated that heavy Siri users might eventually pay extra: Axios. This describes a possible future charge, not a published price or proof that ordinary Siri use will become paid. Apple’s current iCloud+ plans are listed at Apple’s iCloud+ page.

In their joint statement, the companies said Apple selected Google technology after evaluating alternatives and judged it the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models: joint announcement.
The likely strategic advantages are analytical rather than fully stated by either company:

- For Apple: faster access to frontier model capability, stronger Siri reasoning and less need to build every large-scale model component alone while preserving hardware and software integration.
- For Google: distribution across Apple’s device base, cloud and licensing opportunities, and a stronger position against OpenAI and other providers.
The trade-offs include Apple’s dependence on an ecosystem competitor, cloud operating costs, privacy and regulatory scrutiny, and the risk that users see Apple Intelligence as a branded wrapper around another company’s technology. Google may gain reach without controlling the customer relationship, and the arrangement could attract antitrust attention alongside Google’s existing search relationship with Apple.
What remains unknown
- The exact Gemini model versions and how often they will change.
- The division of Apple and Google infrastructure, model weights and inference.
- Data-retention, training and contractual safeguards involving Google technology.
- The final stable Siri AI release date and feature set.
- Final pricing, usage limits and any separate heavy-use tier.
- Whether ChatGPT remains available in precisely its current form.
- Feature-by-feature attribution showing whether a response came from an on-device model, Private Cloud Compute, Gemini technology or another extension.
What this means for Apple users and investors
For users, the practical questions are hardware eligibility, language and geography, cloud dependence and whether the beta’s usefulness justifies waiting. A compatible device may still miss features in the EU or China, and cloud-backed functions can depend on connectivity, server availability and account status.
For investors and technology professionals, the deal gives Apple a faster route to competitive AI while increasing dependence on a rival supplier. It gives Google a major distribution channel but leaves Apple in control of branding and the end-user relationship. The partnership’s long-term value will depend on reliability, privacy execution, cost and whether Apple can maintain meaningful differentiation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple is using Google Gemini models and cloud technology in its next-generation Apple Intelligence foundation, but Siri is not simply becoming the Gemini app. Apple still controls the product, integration and privacy architecture. Availability, pricing, data flows and the final ChatGPT relationship remain unsettled as of August 16, 2026.
