Apple’s cheaper MacBook is no longer a future product. Apple announced the MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, and made it available on March 11. The practical question is now whether the Neo’s lower price outweighs its hardware limits compared with the M5 MacBook Air.
Buy the Neo if you need the lowest-cost new Mac for browsing, schoolwork, documents, video calls, and streaming. Choose the MacBook Air if you can afford substantially more and want greater memory, storage, display, port, and performance headroom. Wait only for a sale, refurbished inventory, or a specific future feature—not for the cheaper MacBook’s launch.

Reports initially described a possible lower-cost MacBook using an iPhone-style A-series chip, with uncertain timing and rumored pricing. That speculation has been superseded by Apple’s launch of the MacBook Neo.

Why the Neo costs less
The Neo is not simply a smaller MacBook Air. Apple created a lower-priced product tier by making several meaningful compromises:
- It uses an A18 Pro rather than an M-series Mac chip.
- It includes only 8GB of unified memory.
- Its base configuration has 256GB of storage.
- Its two USB-C ports are more limited than the Air’s Thunderbolt 4 ports.
- It offers less external-display flexibility.
That combination can be entirely adequate for light-to-moderate work, but it gives the Neo less headroom for demanding applications, extensive multitasking, and long-term use as a primary professional computer. The most important limitation is often the 8GB memory ceiling, not the A18 Pro name.

Apple refreshed the Air with the M5 chip in March 2026. The current Air starts with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, has a 12MP Center Stage camera, and operates without a fan. Apple’s stated battery claim is up to 18 hours.

The Neo is a sensible choice when the lower price is the main objective and your workload fits its limits. Consider it if you:
- Need a new Mac immediately.
- Have a firm budget near the entry-level price.
- Mainly browse, email, write, stream video, attend video calls, and use school or office applications.
- Want macOS and Apple ecosystem integration but cannot justify Air pricing.
- Do not regularly run many demanding applications or large numbers of browser tabs.
- Do not need two external displays, Thunderbolt accessories, or a 15-inch screen.
- Do not edit large 4K or 8K projects, render 3D scenes, run virtual machines, or use memory-heavy professional software.
Remember that a low purchase price does not make the laptop meaningfully upgradeable. Choose enough storage at purchase; Apple silicon Mac memory and storage generally cannot be upgraded by the owner later. A 256GB drive can become restrictive after macOS, applications, photos, and work files consume space.

Who should skip the Neo and buy the Air?
The M5 MacBook Air is the safer choice for buyers who want a primary computer that remains comfortable through several years of multitasking. Pay more for the Air if you:
- Use Adobe Creative Cloud, Xcode, development tools, large spreadsheets, music-production software, or frequent photo and video workflows.
- Need 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage as a practical baseline.
- Want a 15-inch display.
- Use two external displays.
- Need faster or more flexible connectivity.
- Are replacing an Intel Mac and want a substantial performance and compatibility improvement.
- Would rather pay more now than replace an underpowered laptop sooner.
Do not compare only Apple’s list prices. A temporary retailer discount on an M5 Air can narrow the gap with the Neo, while adding storage to the Neo can reduce its apparent savings.
Should current MacBook owners wait?
Recent Apple silicon owners
Owners of M2, M3, or M4 MacBook Air models generally should not upgrade solely because the M5 has a newer name. Current buying guidance describes the M5 improvements as meaningful but not transformative for most recent Apple silicon owners.
Best Value
- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
Intel Mac owners
An Intel Mac with poor battery life, declining performance, application-compatibility problems, or shrinking software support gives you a stronger reason to buy now. Do not wait for an unannounced cheaper model if the existing laptop is interfering with work or school.
Owners of failing laptops
If your current computer is broken, unreliable, or unsafe, waiting is usually false economy. Compare the Neo, a discounted Air, and Apple Certified Refurbished inventory instead.
When waiting does make sense
Wait only when you can keep using your current computer and have a specific reason:
- You are waiting for a retailer sale.
- You are monitoring Apple Certified Refurbished inventory.
- You want to see whether a particular future display or design change matters to you.
- You are willing to wait for a better configuration rather than buying the wrong one today.
Reports that another Air update may not arrive until 2027 are expectations, not an Apple-confirmed schedule. Rumored OLED or ProMotion changes are not a reliable reason for every buyer to delay a necessary purchase.
Ways to lower the real cost
- Check education pricing: Eligible students and educators may see a different Neo price. Confirm that the discount applies to the configuration you need.
- Compare retail prices: Judge the actual discounted M5 Air price against the Neo, not just the manufacturer’s list prices.
- Check Apple Certified Refurbished: Inventory changes frequently, but a refurbished previous-generation Air may deliver more memory and storage for less money.
- Consider trade-in: Apple’s Trade In value depends on the exact model and condition. A private sale may produce more money but requires more effort and risk.
- Budget for protection: AppleCare+ can be useful for a laptop carried to school, work, or travel, but check the plan price before assuming it is worthwhile.
Alternatives to consider
- Windows laptop: Better if you need Windows-only software, gaming performance, upgradeable components, or broader hardware choice.
- Chromebook: A strong fit for web-first use, simple administration, and the lowest possible cost.
- iPad with keyboard: Suitable for reading, note-taking, browsing, streaming, and light document editing, but not a full replacement for Mac desktop applications.
The bottom line by buyer type
- Budget-constrained student or basic user: Buy the MacBook Neo if 8GB memory, 256GB storage, and limited display support are acceptable.
- General-purpose buyer who can stretch the budget: Buy the M5 MacBook Air, especially if you find it discounted.
- Developer, creator, multitasker, or professional: Buy the Air; its memory, storage, chip platform, and connectivity better match the workload.
- Recent Apple silicon owner: Keep your current Mac unless you need a specific upgrade.
- Buyer whose current laptop still works: Wait for a sale or refurbished configuration if price is the deciding factor.
- Buyer with a broken or failing laptop: Buy the model that fits your workload now. The cheaper MacBook has already arrived.
For the latest configurations and prices, check Apple’s MacBook Neo page, MacBook Air store, and refurbished Mac store before checkout.
