Apple’s 9th-generation iPad did reach $199, but the widely reported deal was a historical promotion from August 19, 2024—not a currently verified offer. The price applied to the 10.2-inch, 64GB, Wi‑Fi model at Amazon, down from a $329 reference price; Best Buy was also reported to match it. Deal coverage called it a record low at the time, but “first time ever” is too broad to prove across every seller, coupon, and refurbished listing. MacRumors’ deal report has the original configuration and price details.
What did the $199 iPad deal include?
The promotion was for a new Apple iPad 9th generation with a 10.2-inch display, 64GB of storage, and Wi‑Fi connectivity. It did not mean that every 9th-generation configuration cost $199, and the tablet price did not include sales tax or accessories. The iPad was released in 2021; its A13 Bionic processor, Lightning port, and first-generation Apple Pencil support help distinguish it from newer models. Retail promotions can change or end, and the available reporting does not establish an August 2026 price. Treat $199 as the historical deal price, not a promise that a retailer still has it.

Was $199 really a record-low price?
Contemporary deal coverage described $199 as a new all-time low for the 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad 9, about $30 below its previous low. That is best understood as the lowest tracked or reported price at the time, not a universally audited record covering every retailer, local clearance, coupon, open-box unit, or refurbished offer. Tom’s Guide reported the limited-time $199 offer, and later MacRumors reported $199.99 as a record-low price during Black Friday 2024.

Is the iPad 9 still worth buying?
At a genuine $199 for a new unit from a reputable seller, it was a compelling low-cost choice for basic tablet use. The key is to weigh the lower upfront price against 64GB of storage, older hardware, and the shorter expected support runway of an older device. Everyday usability and long-term value are different questions: a tablet can handle routine tasks well without being the best purchase for someone planning to keep it for many years.
It suits basic, everyday use
- Web browsing, email, reading, and cloud-based documents.
- Streaming video, casual games, and video calls; the front camera supports Center Stage.
- A first tablet for a child or family member, if 64GB is enough for the apps and media they use.
- People who prefer a physical Home button, Touch ID, and a headphone jack over a newer design.
Look elsewhere for demanding or long-term use
- Heavy multitasking, demanding games, video editing, or extensive creative projects.
- USB‑C, a modern accessory setup, or compatibility with Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro.
- A device expected to provide many years of future software support. Do not assume a specific support term; check Apple’s current compatibility information when deciding.
- A price close to a newer iPad’s current selling price, where the newer model may offer a stronger long-term value.
Is 64GB enough storage?
It can work for browsing, email, streaming services, cloud documents, a modest app collection, and a user who regularly removes downloaded files. It is a tighter fit for large games, downloaded films, offline travel, extensive photos or videos, creative apps, or several people sharing one tablet. The advertised capacity is not all available for personal files: iPadOS and system data use some space, and the amount varies by software version.

For context, deal coverage reported the 256GB Wi‑Fi model at $349.99 in September 2024, rather than $199. That was a historical promotion, not a current quote. MacRumors’ September 2024 price roundup also listed cellular configurations.

The $199 offer was for Wi‑Fi only. In September 2024, the reported deal prices were $329.99 for the 64GB cellular model and $479.99 for the 256GB cellular model. Cellular is useful for frequent travel or work away from Wi‑Fi when phone tethering is inconvenient; service may require a separate carrier plan with recurring costs, and activation and network terms vary. If the iPad will mostly be used at home, school, or work, Wi‑Fi avoids paying more for cellular hardware and service.

What should you compare it with?
Do not judge the 2021 iPad only against its old $329 reference price. Compare the price you can actually pay today with a newer base iPad, a refurbished 10th-generation iPad, or a refurbished iPad Air. A newer base iPad may offer a newer processor, USB‑C, a modern design, and better prospects for future support, but generally costs more. Refurbished models can improve hardware value, though condition, battery health, warranty, return terms, and seller reputation matter. An Android tablet may offer more storage per dollar, but differs in apps, update policies, and integration with Apple devices.
If a newer iPad costs only modestly more, compare that real price difference with the older model’s storage, port, accessory compatibility, and likely useful life. Use current listings for the comparison: the historical deal prices above do not establish what alternatives cost now.

How to verify an iPad listing before paying
- Check the configuration: confirm it is the 9th generation, 64GB, and Wi‑Fi—not a 256GB, cellular, or different-generation model.
- Confirm condition: make sure the listing says new if that is what you want; distinguish new from refurbished, renewed, open-box, and used.
- Check the seller and fulfillment: review who sells and ships the item, especially on marketplace listings, along with warranty coverage and return period.
- Review the full price: confirm the discount is applied in the cart and account for shipping and sales tax. Check whether a coupon must be selected and whether the offer is limited by color, location, quantity, or stock.
- Budget for what is missing: the headline price covers the tablet, not a case, screen protector, keyboard, Apple Pencil, replacement cable or charger, or cellular service.
Should you buy it?
If a new 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad 9 is genuinely available for $199, you want an affordable device for routine tasks, and the Home button and Lightning port are acceptable, the deal is attractive. If the actual price is materially higher, 64GB is too restrictive, or a newer model is close in price, compare the newer option before buying. For a 2021 device, the right decision depends on the total cost and how long you expect to use it—not just the size of the discount.
