Apple’s 2026 U.S. Back to School promotion was real, but the “free AirPods” headline was misleading. Apple offered a $100 or $150 Apple Gift Card with qualifying MacBook and iPad purchases made through its education channels. The promotion ran from July 16 through August 27, 2026, and has now ended.
What the U.S. promotion offered
Under Apple’s published U.S. terms, qualifying purchases received an Apple Gift Card rather than a free pair of AirPods. The promotional values were:

Apple’s terms describe the gift card as a promotional product with a discount equal to its value. It is intended for future Apple purchases, not as cash back or an immediate reduction that can be withdrawn from the transaction. See Apple’s official promotion terms.
Can you use the gift card for AirPods?
Yes. Apple says its gift cards can be used for finished Apple products, including AirPods, Macs, iPads, Apple Watch, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories. But that means the card could help pay for AirPods later; it does not mean AirPods were included with the computer or tablet.

That distinction matters financially. A $100 gift card is useful only if you already expect to spend money inside Apple’s ecosystem. It is not equivalent to receiving a specific accessory, and it is not a cash-equivalent rebate.
Which products qualified?
The U.S. offer covered only the product families listed in Apple’s terms:
- MacBook Air
- MacBook Pro
- iPad Air
- iPad Pro
It did not automatically apply to every Mac or iPad. MacBook Neo, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, the standard iPad, and iPad mini should not be treated as eligible unless Apple’s checkout specifically identifies them as part of a current promotion.

These were U.S. education prices, not universal prices for every configuration. Screen size, memory, storage, taxes, trade-in credit, and delivery availability can change the final cost. Apple’s product pages also showed different configurations and delivery dates, so buyers needed to check the exact model at checkout. Who was eligible?
Apple’s U.S. education-purchasing rules generally included:
- Students attending or accepted into a U.S. or Puerto Rico higher-education institution
- Faculty and staff of higher-education institutions
- K–12 employees, including homeschool teachers
- Parents purchasing on behalf of an eligible higher-education student
- Certain currently serving school-board members
Apple may require an active school email address or other documentation. Eligibility is not the same for every student, parent, or school employee. In particular, a parent of a K–12 student should not assume that the child’s enrollment alone qualifies the purchase. Apple’s education sales policies provide the applicable categories and restrictions.

Schools, businesses, government entities, resellers, nonprofit organizations, and enterprise purchasers were excluded from this individual promotion. Refurbished, end-of-life, and open-box products sold as-is were also excluded.

Where could customers buy?
Eligible purchases could be made through:
- Apple’s U.S. Education Store
- U.S. Apple retail stores
- Apple’s phone-order channel at 1-800-MY-APPLE
The purchase and delivery had to occur within the same qualifying country. Buying from Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, an authorized reseller, or another marketplace did not automatically qualify for Apple’s promotion. Retailers may have offered their own discounts, however, so comparison shopping remained important.
Important return and refund rules
The gift card was not risk-free if the device was later returned. Apple’s terms required the eligible product and promotional product to be returned for a full refund.
If the gift card was missing, redeemed, or not returned, Apple could deduct its full original value from the refund or exchange. If the qualifying device was not returned, Apple could also remove the special promotional pricing and charge the applicable full price.
For that reason, buyers should be confident about the model, storage, and accessories before ordering. Keeping the gift-card email and redemption details was also important.

Could the offer be combined with financing or other discounts?
Apple’s terms said the promotion could be combined with other Apple promotions directed at individual end users, subject to the other promotion’s rules. Apple Card Monthly Installments might also have been available to eligible customers, subject to credit approval and credit limits.
That should not be interpreted as a universal interest-free financing offer. The final economics depend on the buyer’s approval, taxes, trade-in credit, AppleCare+, accessories, and the total amount financed.

The promotion made the most sense for someone who already needed a qualifying MacBook or iPad and expected to buy another Apple product later. The education-store price plus the gift-card value could be attractive, particularly for a buyer who wanted AirPods, accessories, apps, or another Apple product.

Choosing among the eligible devices
- MacBook Air: The practical default for most students handling documents, research, browsing, video calls, and ordinary school software.
- MacBook Pro: More appropriate for sustained creative, engineering, software-development, or other professional workloads. It is usually unnecessary for basic coursework.
- iPad Air: A strong tablet-first option for reading, handwritten notes, media, and general productivity. A keyboard and stylus can significantly increase the total cost.
- iPad Pro: A premium choice for buyers who specifically need its higher-end display or performance capabilities. It is often poor value for ordinary schoolwork.
How to evaluate a future Apple education promotion
- Open the relevant country’s Apple Education Store.
- Confirm that the shopper meets Apple’s education eligibility rules.
- Choose a qualifying product and verify that the promotional value appears on the product page or in the cart.
- Compare Apple’s final price—including tax, accessories, AppleCare+, and financing costs—with current retailer prices.
- Check the delivery or pickup date and confirm the exact memory and storage configuration.
- Save the gift-card information and review the return conditions before completing the order.
Why some headlines mention AirPods
Apple’s Back to School promotions vary by country and year. Some international versions have included products such as AirPods 4, AirTags, or Apple Pencil Pro. Those offers should not be combined with the U.S. terms or presented as a global Apple promotion.
Readers outside the United States should use their local Apple Education Store or Apple’s country-specific education site. Eligibility, dates, qualifying products, and promotional accessories can differ substantially by market.
Bottom line for U.S. shoppers
Apple’s 2026 U.S. promotion was a $100–$150 Apple Gift Card offer, not a free-AirPods bundle. Because the promotion ended on August 27, 2026, it cannot now be claimed under those published dates. For any future sale, buy only if you already need the qualifying device, can use the gift card, and have compared Apple’s complete checkout price with competing retailers.
