Apple did not announce that it was buying Perplexity AI. Bloomberg reported on June 20, 2025, that Apple executives had held early internal discussions about potentially bidding for the AI-search startup. The discussions had not reached Perplexity’s management and might never have led to an offer. Perplexity told Reuters it had no knowledge of current or future merger discussions involving the company.
The “biggest-ever acquisition” description was therefore conditional: Perplexity had reportedly been valued at about $14 billion, which would have exceeded Apple’s $3 billion purchase of Beats in 2014 if a transaction had been priced near that level.
What Apple was actually reported to be considering
According to Bloomberg, Apple executives discussed the possibility of making a bid for Perplexity AI. The reported conversations involved Adrian Perica, Apple’s mergers-and-acquisitions chief, Services chief Eddy Cue and senior AI decision-makers, according to unnamed sources familiar with the discussions.
That report supports only the existence of internal deliberations. It does not establish that Apple:

- Agreed on a valuation or purchase price;
- Signed a definitive acquisition agreement; or
- Completed the transaction.
Reuters reported via CNA that Apple executives had not discussed a bid with Perplexity’s management. Perplexity said it had no knowledge of current or future M&A discussions involving the company, while Apple did not immediately comment.
Why Perplexity could interest Apple
Perplexity is primarily an AI-powered search and answer product. Its appeal to Apple would not necessarily be ownership of a leading general-purpose foundation model. The more relevant assets would be its consumer search interface, retrieval workflow, citations, web-answer experience and specialized staff.
A shortcut to AI-native search
Apple has long controlled the operating systems and devices through which people search, but it has not operated a major general-purpose web-search engine comparable to Google Search. Buying Perplexity could have offered Apple a functioning AI-search product rather than requiring it to build an answer engine, retrieval system and user experience entirely from scratch.
That could have created options for Safari, Spotlight, Siri or Apple Intelligence. It might also have helped Apple respond to a shift in user behavior from short keyword queries toward conversational questions and synthesized answers.

A possible Siri and Apple Intelligence boost
Perplexity’s technology could potentially supplement Apple’s assistant strategy by helping Siri retrieve and summarize current information from the web. But an acquisition would not automatically “fix Siri.” Integrating an external search product into Apple’s privacy standards, operating systems and product-review process would be a substantial engineering and organizational challenge.

More leverage in search
Apple discloses that it receives revenue from arrangements with Google and other providers that supply search services on Apple platforms. Its filings do not identify the often-cited estimate of roughly $20 billion a year for Google’s default-search arrangement; that figure comes from media reporting, not Apple’s own disclosure. Owning an alternative search product could give Apple greater negotiating leverage and a potential hedge if Google’s payments, distribution arrangements or default status changed. However, the reporting supports a possible strategic connection—not proof that Google’s legal troubles caused Apple to consider Perplexity.
Talent and speed
Apple could also have been evaluating Perplexity as a way to acquire experienced AI-search talent and accelerate a product area where startups can often move faster than large companies. That benefit would depend heavily on whether key employees stayed after an acquisition and whether Apple preserved enough of the startup’s operating speed.
Why it could have been Apple’s largest acquisition
Apple announced its acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics on May 28, 2014, for total consideration of $3 billion: approximately $2.6 billion at closing and about $400 million that would vest over time. The details are in Apple’s announcement.
Contemporary coverage of the Perplexity discussions cited a funding-round valuation of approximately $14 billion. That was an investor valuation, not an Apple offer. A purchase at or near $14 billion would have exceeded the Beats transaction and become Apple’s largest acquisition, but there is no evidence in the cited reporting that Apple offered that amount.

The distinction matters for investors and readers assessing headlines. A private-company funding valuation can change quickly and does not determine what an acquirer would pay. A transaction price could include cash, stock, retention packages, earn-outs, debt or other terms.
Why Apple might prefer not to buy Perplexity
The price and opportunity cost
A price near $14 billion would have been several times Apple’s previous acquisition record. Apple would need to determine whether buying Perplexity offered more durable value than hiring talent, investing in the company, licensing its technology or forming a commercial partnership.
AI-search economics are difficult
Generating detailed AI answers can require substantially more computing than serving a conventional list of search links. At iPhone scale, infrastructure costs could become significant. AI answers also do not necessarily reproduce Google’s established advertising economics, particularly when users receive a single synthesized response instead of visiting multiple search-result pages.
Content and legal exposure
Perplexity’s product depends on crawling, retrieving and summarizing web content. That creates potential disputes over copyright, attribution, publisher relationships and commercial licensing. Apple would be buying those risks along with the technology and user experience.
It may not solve the foundation-model problem
Perplexity’s value in this story is its AI-search product and talent. Buying it would not necessarily give Apple ownership of a frontier foundation model or eliminate dependence on outside models, cloud providers and web infrastructure.

Integration and regulatory risk
Apple’s privacy expectations, platform controls and centralized product culture could conflict with the speed and experimentation that helped Perplexity grow. A large platform acquiring an emerging search competitor could also attract competition scrutiny, especially while regulators were examining digital gatekeepers and Google’s search-distribution practices.

The search relationship is financially important to Apple, but it is also legally exposed. Alphabet said in its 2025 Form 10-K that a final judgment entered in December 2025 imposed restrictions involving search distribution and data-sharing remedies, and that Google appealed in January 2026.
Those developments could affect the economics and structure of default-search agreements. They do not prove that Apple’s reported Perplexity discussions were a direct response to the litigation, nor do they show that Apple was preparing to abandon Google.
What changed after the 2025 report
On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google Gemini models and Google cloud technology.
That partnership makes the original acquisition thesis more nuanced. Apple may still want an AI-native search experience, retrieval tools or additional assistant technology, but it no longer makes sense to frame the company’s choices as simply “build everything internally or buy Perplexity.” Partnership is another major route.

The Google agreement addresses foundation-model capabilities, but it does not automatically provide Perplexity’s consumer search interface, web-answer workflow, citations or startup team. The two strategies could theoretically coexist. Even so, the partnership weakens the claim that Apple necessarily needed to acquire Perplexity to catch up in AI.
What would signal a real acquisition
Readers should distinguish a reported internal review from evidence of an active transaction. Stronger confirmation would include contact with Perplexity’s management, a formal offer, due-diligence activity acknowledged by the parties, a negotiated agreement, regulatory filings or an official announcement.
Until such evidence appears, the most accurate description is that Apple executives reportedly considered a possible bid in June 2025. The available evidence does not establish a completed, announced or formally agreed acquisition.
Investor takeaway
The report was strategically meaningful even without becoming a deal. It suggested that Apple recognized the importance of AI-native search and was evaluating ways to reduce its dependence on a powerful external search partner while improving Siri and Apple Intelligence.
