The deal covered the 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s M4 Pro chip, 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. It cut the cited $1,999 list price by $300, or about 15%.
AppleInsider reported the promotion as a record low at the time. Retailer pages later showed different prices and inconsistent stock, so verify the live product page and checkout total before treating this as an active deal.
The deal, in one sentence
Best Buy sold a new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro for $1,699 on Christmas Eve 2024, down from the cited $1,999 list price. The promotion was reported by AppleInsider as a new tracked low and was limited to December 24.
Important availability warning
This is a historical deal, not a guaranteed current price. Best Buy’s indexed pages for the same model have shown $1,799, $1,999 and unavailable states at different times. Some pages also show open-box inventory. A search result can preserve an old price even when the checkout price is higher, so check the final cart, seller, condition, color and delivery or pickup option.

Why the M4 Pro version matters
Performance headroom for professional work
The M4 Pro tier is aimed at sustained workloads such as compiling software, running virtual machines, editing high-resolution photo and video projects, 3D work and heavy multitasking. Its 24GB memory starting point is more practical for large codebases, creative applications and multiple simultaneous tools than entry-level memory configurations.

Compared with a MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro provides active cooling for longer workloads, a brighter and smoother professional display, and a broader port selection that is useful for HDMI, SD-card and Thunderbolt-heavy setups. These are design and positioning differences; this article does not claim independent benchmark results.
The compromise is storage
512GB is workable for office files, coding projects and moderate media work, but it can fill quickly with video libraries, virtual machines, sample libraries or development toolchains. A larger internal SSD is more convenient; an external SSD or dock can lower the cost, while adding cables, portability concerns and another device to manage.

Was $1,699 a genuinely good price?
Yes, for a new unit with this specification, $1,699 was an unusually strong price: $300 below the cited list price. AppleInsider called it a record low based on its tracked prices on December 24, 2024. “Record low” here means the lowest price that outlet reported at that time, not a universal guarantee covering every education discount, refurbished listing, marketplace seller or future promotion.
The short duration was part of the value. A one-day holiday promotion can disappear when inventory sells through, and later indexed listings returning to $1,799 or $1,999 indicate that $1,699 was not a permanent reduction.

New, open-box and refurbished are different purchases
The original $1,699 report described a new retail machine. Best Buy has also displayed open-box offers around $1,752.99, $1,836.99 and other amounts depending on listing and date. Those prices are not evidence that a new MacBook Pro reached $1,699.

A newer MacBook Pro
By 2026, newer-generation MacBook Pro models are being sold, but the exact chip, configuration and price must be checked on the live Apple buying page. Choose newer hardware when the price gap is small or when a longer expected support runway, improved battery efficiency, graphics, connectivity or AI features matter more than the historical discount. Do not assume the M4 Pro is faster than a successor without workload-specific benchmarks.
MacBook Air
The MacBook Air is usually the better value for browsing, writing, schoolwork, office applications and general travel. Its thin, quiet design is less suited to long-running CPU or GPU workloads, and it does not target the same display, cooling and port requirements as the Pro.

More storage or a different M4 Pro configuration
Pay for a larger SSD if your projects must stay on the laptop or you cannot reliably use external storage. More memory is difficult to add later because unified memory is not user-upgradable, so a small saving on a lower-memory model may be false economy for professional workloads.
Who should buy this configuration?
- Developers compiling large projects or running containers and virtual machines.
- Video, photo, audio and 3D professionals who need sustained performance in a portable system.
- Researchers, engineers and power users who regularly keep demanding applications open together.
- Buyers who specifically want the Pro display and ports and can work within 512GB or add fast external storage.
Who should skip it?
- Casual users whose work is mainly web, email, streaming and office applications.
- Travelers who prioritize the lightest, quietest and lowest-cost Mac over sustained performance.
- Anyone unwilling to manage external storage despite large media, game or virtual-machine libraries.
- Buyers who can get a newer MacBook Pro for only a small premium and value newer-generation features more than the discount.
Before you buy: a five-point checkout check
- Confirm the title says M4 Pro, not the regular M4.
- Verify 24GB unified memory and 512GB SSD; confirm the desired Space Black or Silver color.
- Check that the condition is new if you are comparing against the $1,699 historical deal.
- Review the seller, warranty, return policy, delivery date and pickup location.
- Compare the final cash total, including sales tax and any AppleCare+ purchase; financing terms are not a discount.
For accessories relevant to the 512GB limitation, Apple lists compatible storage and docks at its Mac accessories page. AppleCare+ details are at Apple Support.
Bottom line
The 14-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro at $1,699 was a genuine, excellent new-unit price on December 24, 2024: 12-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory and 512GB storage for $300 below the cited list price. Treat it as deal history unless a retailer’s current page and checkout independently show $1,699. If the price reappears, it is compelling for sustained professional workloads; otherwise compare the current MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air and clearly labeled open-box options based on your workload, storage needs and the size of the price gap.
