What the $1,399 deal included
AppleInsider reported the promotion on December 25, 2024. The deal was for the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s base M4 chip—not an M4 Pro or M4 Max model—and 16GB unified memory, a 512GB SSD and Space Black finish. The reported price was about $200 below the model’s $1,599 U.S. launch price. AppleInsider’s deal report and Apple’s October 2024 announcement document the offer and launch price.
Apple introduced the M4 MacBook Pro on October 30, 2024, with availability beginning November 8. The base configuration has a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, a headphone jack and a 12MP Center Stage camera. Apple advertised up to 24 hours of battery life under its stated testing conditions; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of an individual user’s runtime. Where the offer appeared—and what shipping meant
The deal report named B&H Photo and Amazon, but did not describe identical availability at both retailers. B&H reportedly had units available with free next-business-day delivery for eligible addresses in the contiguous United States. Amazon’s Space Black listing was reportedly backordered at the time. Those were conditions reported in December 2024; they do not establish current stock, shipping or seller terms.

“Next business day” is not the same as “tomorrow.” Weekends and holidays may not count, orders can be subject to a daily cutoff, and inventory or destination can change the estimate. A delivery promise on a deal article or product page is not a universal fulfillment guarantee. The final checkout estimate after entering your address is the relevant one.
How to check a current M4 listing
If a retailer still lists an M4 MacBook Pro, verify the whole offer rather than relying on the product-family name or headline price. Retail pages can group different configurations and sellers together.

- Check that the configuration is 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD, and confirm the finish and model identifier against the listing details.
- Verify that the condition is explicitly new—not open-box, refurbished, renewed or used.
- Check who is selling the computer, who fulfills it, who handles returns and warranty service, and whether the seller’s terms are acceptable.
- Enter your ZIP code and confirm the shipping charge is $0 and checkout shows a specific next-business-day delivery date. Check any order cutoff and whether the item is physically in stock.
- Review the total before paying. The advertised $1,399 was a product price; sales tax, optional protection plans and accessories can increase the amount charged.
If a price depends on a coupon, membership or financing offer, check the conditions and compare the actual amount due with the price of a comparable M5 configuration. A search result or old promotion does not establish that the M4 is currently available at that price.

The M4 is a previous-generation professional laptop, not automatically an obsolete one. Its value now depends on the size of the discount against a comparable current model, the condition of the unit, and the seller’s return and warranty terms.

Apple introduced the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro in October 2025 and announced M5 Pro and M5 Max models in March 2026. Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications and Mac buying page are better references for current configurations than the 2024 deal. Apple launched the base 14-inch M5 at $1,599, but current pricing and configurations can change. At a $1,399 M4 price, the historical $200 saving over its own launch price is not enough by itself to show that it is the better buy.
Apple says the M5 brings improvements in AI, graphics, memory bandwidth and SSD performance. In its announcement, Apple claimed up to 3.5 times the AI performance and up to 1.6 times faster graphics compared with the previous generation; those are Apple’s claims, not independent benchmark results. Apple’s M5 announcement describes the comparison. Buyers who need newer hardware for demanding graphics or local AI workloads should weigh those claims alongside independent testing and their actual software needs.
An M4 may make sense when
- The unit is new, comes with a clear warranty and return policy, and costs materially less than a comparable M5.
- Your work is mainly schoolwork, office apps, browsing, software development, general photo editing or moderate video editing, rather than work that depends on the newest GPU or AI capabilities.
- The 16GB memory and 512GB storage meet your needs; neither can be upgraded later in the ordinary way.
Consider the M5 or another configuration when
- The M4 is only slightly cheaper than a comparable M5, particularly if its seller, warranty or return terms are worse.
- You need more memory or storage than the base M4 configuration offers, or rely on demanding graphics, AI or other workloads that could benefit from newer hardware.
- The M4 listing is refurbished, renewed, backordered, sold by an unclear marketplace seller or subject to restrictive terms.
For demanding video production, 3D work, large local AI workloads or other memory- and GPU-intensive tasks, Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max models are separate, higher-performance options—not direct substitutes at the old base-M4 deal price. Apple introduced those models in its March 2026 announcement.
