Apple Trade In usually does not pay unrestricted cash. In the U.S., Apple generally offers credit toward an Apple purchase or an Apple Gift Card. If you buy a qualifying Apple device and pay in full, the credit may be applied to your original payment method up to the purchase price; any excess is issued as an Apple Gift Card.
Apple’s public estimates are useful for a starting point, but your exact offer depends on the model, storage, connectivity, and condition. AirPods also require special caution: Apple may accept them for recycling without displaying a paid trade-in value.

Apple Trade In values at a glance
The following broad estimates were visible on Apple’s U.S. Trade In page in August 2026. They are headline ranges, not guaranteed offers, and Apple’s dynamic estimator can change them.
| Device type | Headline estimate checked in August 2026 | How value is issued | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | $35–$685 | Purchase credit or Apple Gift Card | Simple upgrades and in-store trade-ins | Actual value depends heavily on model and condition |
| iPad | $40–$670 | Purchase credit or Apple Gift Card | Replacing an iPad or receiving Apple credit | Wi-Fi, cellular, storage, and generation affect the quote |
| AirPods | No standard public range shown | Potentially recycling rather than paid trade-in | Convenient disposal | Do not assume Apple will pay for every model |
Representative maximums displayed included up to $685 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max, $550 for an iPhone 16 Pro, $455 for an iPhone 16 Plus, and $435 for an iPhone 16. For iPads, Apple displayed maximums including up to $670 for an iPad Pro, $445 for an iPad Air, $220 for an iPad, and $250 for an iPad mini.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
These figures are not a fixed Apple rate card. Separate page captures showed slightly different maximums, including up to $695 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max and $690 for an iPad Pro. Check the live Apple Trade In estimator for the device-specific offer before making a decision.
Does Apple Trade In pay cash?
For ordinary U.S. consumer trade-ins, Apple’s program normally produces one of three outcomes:
- Credit toward a new Apple product. The trade-in value reduces the amount you pay for an eligible iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch.
- An Apple Gift Card. This is Apple credit, not a bank transfer or unrestricted cash.
- Free recycling. If Apple assigns no trade-in value, it may still recycle the device at no charge.
When you buy a new Apple device online and pay in full, Apple says trade-in credit can be applied to the original payment method up to the purchase price. If the trade-in is worth more than that purchase, the remainder becomes an Apple Gift Card. That does not make the Gift Card equivalent to cash; it is generally useful within Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple has a separate business trade-in process. Apple describes ACH credit for qualifying business transactions and a minimum of five devices for the initial trade-in. That is not the ordinary consumer program.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What outcome do you want?
| Goal | Is Apple Trade In a fit? |
|---|---|
| Lower the cost of a new Apple device | Yes |
| Receive Apple credit for a later purchase | Yes |
| Get unrestricted cash immediately | Generally no |
| Avoid negotiating with buyers | Yes |
| Maximize resale proceeds | Not necessarily |
| Dispose of a worthless device responsibly | Yes, through recycling |
How Apple calculates the exact value
Apple’s estimate is based on the particular product and the condition you report. Important variables include:
- Exact family and generation: An iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are different trade-in products.
- Storage: Higher-capacity versions may receive different offers.
- Connectivity: For iPads, Wi-Fi and cellular models are evaluated differently.
- Functionality: The device may need to power on and function normally.
- Physical condition: Cracked screens, damaged back glass, camera problems, defective buttons, charging issues, water damage, and battery problems can reduce the offer.
- Ownership status: Find My and Activation Lock must be removed, and the device cannot remain subject to a lease, financing obligation, or another ownership interest.
The amount shown initially is conditional. Apple may inspect the device after it arrives and revise the offer if its real condition differs from your answers. If you are uncertain between two condition choices, use the less favorable description rather than assuming you will receive the maximum.
How to check your Apple Trade In value
- Open Apple’s U.S. Trade In page.
- Choose iPhone, iPad, AirPods, or the relevant product category.
- Select the exact model, generation, manufacturer, storage capacity, and connectivity configuration.
- Answer the condition and functionality questions accurately.
- Record or screenshot the offer and the date you received it.
- Compare that offer with at least one alternative before shipping the device.
Do not make a decision based only on an “up to” headline. The maximum typically reflects a particular configuration in qualifying condition. An older, damaged, nonworking, or lower-capacity device can receive substantially less—or no trade-in credit.
What about AirPods?
Apple lists AirPods among products and accessories it will recycle, but its public U.S. Trade In page does not currently present AirPods in the same prominent value tables shown for iPhone and iPad. Therefore, do not treat AirPods as having a standard Apple cash value.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Use Apple’s live flow for the exact AirPods model. If the estimator does not display a dollar value, the offer is recycling rather than a paid trade-in. A private sale or another buyback service may be more relevant if your goal is money, but compare the exact model, condition, case, and payout method on the same day.
Before handing over AirPods:
- Remove them from your Apple Account and Find My device list if they appear there.
- Unpair them from your iPhone.
- Include the charging case if the service requests the complete product.
- Do not send unrelated cables, ear tips, or accessories unless instructed.
- Clean them carefully without introducing moisture into openings.
- Confirm whether Apple is offering a payment or only recycling the set.
Online versus Apple Store trade-in
| Online | Apple Store | |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection | After you ship the device | Specialist evaluates it in the store |
| Speed | Usually involves shipping and processing | Can provide a faster on-the-spot evaluation |
| Convenience | No store visit required | Requires visiting a participating Apple Store |
| Repricing risk | Offer can change after inspection | Final credit can differ if physical condition does not match the estimate |
Apple says the program is available online and in Apple Stores. Online is useful if you are remote or ordering a replacement; in-store trade-in avoids mailing the device and waiting for an inspection, but you must accept the store’s evaluation.
How long does Apple Trade In take?
Apple’s current FAQ says the online process generally takes two to three weeks. When the trade-in is linked to a new device, Apple says the old device generally needs to arrive within 14 days of receiving the new one. After verification, credit processing may take three to five business days.
These are general estimates, not guarantees. Keep the old device until your data has transferred successfully and you are ready to meet the return deadline.

Prepare an iPhone or iPad before trading it in
- Back up your data to iCloud or a computer.
- Transfer your data and verify that the replacement device has what you need.
- Unpair an Apple Watch if it is connected to the iPhone.
- Sign out of your Apple Account where required.
- Turn off Find My. This removes the Activation Lock that can prevent Apple from processing the device.
- Erase all content and settings. Apple says you—not Apple—are responsible for backing up and deleting personal information.
- Remove the physical SIM card if the device has one.
- Remove cases, stickers, and unrelated accessories. Send only what the confirmation instructions request.
- Photograph the device from multiple angles and record its serial number or IMEI before shipping.
- Package and ship it according to Apple’s instructions.
For detailed preparation guidance, see Apple’s instructions for selling, giving away, trading in, or recycling an iPhone or iPad.
Battery warning: Do not mail a device with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery. Follow Apple’s shipping guidance for battery-powered electronics and contact Apple if you are unsure whether the device is safe to ship.

Apple may revise the offer when inspection finds a cracked display, damaged back glass, weak or defective battery, nonworking camera, faulty buttons, charging problems, water damage, missing components, or a mismatch in model, storage, or condition.

You can generally either:
- Accept the revised offer. Depending on the transaction, Apple may charge or credit the difference to the original payment method.
- Reject the revised offer. Apple’s stated process allows the trade-in to be canceled and the device returned, subject to the applicable transaction terms.
Missing Find My removal and failure to meet the return deadline can also affect the transaction. Do not ship a device unless you are comfortable with the possibility of inspection-based repricing. Keep your photos, serial number, shipping receipt, and original quote until the transaction is complete.

Common eligibility problems
- Activation Lock remains enabled: Turn off Find My and verify that the device no longer appears in your Apple Account device list.
- The device is financed or leased: Resolve the outstanding carrier or lender obligation first. Apple’s terms require that no lease, contractual commitment, or third-party interest remain attached.
- The device is lost or stolen: You must own it or be authorized by the owner; a reported lost or stolen device is not an ordinary eligible trade-in.
- The battery is swollen: Do not ship it. Seek safe handling or recycling instructions.
- The device does not power on or has major damage: It may receive a reduced value or be routed to recycling.
- A deadline is missed: A linked trade-in generally must arrive within the stated window, commonly 14 days after the new device is received.
Apple Trade In versus selling elsewhere
| Route | Potential advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | Simple, first-party process; purchase credit; store option; free recycling | Usually not unrestricted cash; quote can be repriced |
| Private sale | Worth investigating when maximum cash matters | Photos, listings, negotiation, fraud risk, shipping or meetups, and possible disputes |
| Carrier promotion | May provide substantial value when activating a line | Often paid as monthly bill credits and may require a carrier commitment |
| Retailer or specialist buyback | May offer a different payout method or shopping credit | Grading, deductions, eligibility, and payment rules vary |
For a comparison point, you can check the exact offer at Best Buy’s Apple trade-in page. Do not assume Best Buy, a carrier, or any buyback service will pay more; compare the same device, condition, and payout form on the same date.
Apple is often the better choice for a quick, familiar transaction or for recycling a device with little resale value. Selling privately or obtaining a cash-buyback quote may be worth the added work when the device is newer, undamaged, and in demand.
Is Apple Trade In worth it?
Choose Apple Trade In when convenience, a straightforward upgrade, or Apple credit matters more than maximizing the proceeds. Compare alternatives first when you need bank cash, own a newer high-demand device, or are willing to list, ship, and negotiate. For AirPods, verify that Apple is offering money rather than recycling before treating the program as a sale.

Finally, read the transaction terms before submitting a device. If you return the new device purchased with a trade-in, Apple says the trade-in may be canceled automatically, and in some cases the old device may not be returnable. That makes Apple Trade In a poor fit for anyone planning to use a trade-in while casually testing and returning a new purchase.
