Apple Shares Plunged During the April 2025 U.S.-China Tariff Escalation

The 104% tariff headline referred to a stage of the April 2025 U.S.-China escalation. Apple’s reported losses were sharp, but the stock observations do not prove tariffs alone caused every move.

Apple shares fell sharply during the U.S.-China tariff escalation in April 2025. The widely reported 104% figure described a U.S. tariff on Chinese goods at that point in the episode—not a current, universal rate. On April 7, the Associated Press reported Apple was down 3.2% in afternoon trading to $182.34 per share, after losing more than 16% over the preceding Thursday and Friday.

What did the 104% tariff figure mean?

On April 9, 2025, Axios reported that the United States had imposed a 104% tariff on Chinese goods. The figure belongs to that particular stage of the April escalation; it should not be read as a rate that applies today or to every product in every later trade arrangement. Axios’s April 9 report also said Apple shares and much of the market rallied after President Donald Trump paused reciprocal tariffs for 90 days for every nation except China.

The policy sequence matters. In its April 9 executive order, the White House recounted raising duties on Chinese imports after China announced retaliation. China’s announced 84% tariff on U.S.-origin goods was to take effect April 10. The order temporarily suspended for 90 days certain individual duties on other listed trading partners, while excluding China from that suspension. The order documents the administration’s action and the retaliation sequence; it is not a statement of current tariff rates. Read the April 9 executive order.

Later tariff actions and exclusions further changed the picture. USTR’s maintained index records subsequent actions, so a present-day claim about a tariff needs to identify its date and the goods it covers rather than reuse the April headline. USTR’s tariff-actions index provides a record of those later actions.

When did Apple shares fall, and by how much?

The available figures are dated snapshots, not current share prices. The Associated Press reported the following on April 7, 2025:

  • Apple was down 3.2% to $182.34 per share in afternoon trading.
  • That move followed a combined decline of more than 16% on the preceding Thursday and Friday.
  • Apple was down more than 25% year to date at the time of the report.

These observations show a steep selloff around the escalation, but they do not establish that tariffs alone caused each move. Tariff announcements were a salient market catalyst; the reported prices are measurements of what happened to the stock, not a causal estimate. The AP report also quoted Craig Singleton, senior China fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, describing Trump’s April 7 threat as “a blunt ultimatum to Beijing that sharply raises the takes in the U.S.-China tariff war.” See AP’s April 7 market report.

How could tariffs affect Apple?

Tariffs can affect a company through the origin of goods and components, the scope of duties and exclusions, and the resulting costs of importing or adjusting its supply chain. Apple’s June 2025 earnings-call transcript helps explain the exposure, while also showing why it cannot be reduced to a single tariff rate.

Apple said China would remain the country of origin for the vast majority of its total product sales outside the United States. The company also said that, at the time of the call, the vast majority of listed products—including iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro—were not subject to the global reciprocal tariffs announced in April, amid a Commerce Department Section 232 investigation into semiconductor imports.

Apple estimated a $900 million cost impact for the June quarter if the then-current global tariff rates, policies and applications remained unchanged for the rest of that quarter. That was a conditional estimate made in June 2025, not a final reported expense or a forecast for current quarters. Apple’s earnings materials include the company’s disclosures.

What did Apple announce later about U.S. investment?

In August 2025, the White House said Apple would raise its U.S. investment to $600 billion over four years and bring additional supply-chain components and advanced manufacturing to the country. That later announcement provides context about Apple’s stated investment direction; it does not show that the April selloff caused the commitment. Read the White House announcement.
