What happened at Apple?
According to Bloomberg-based reporting, Apple notified employees on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, that approximately 100 positions in its Services organization were being eliminated. The affected teams reported within the organization led by Eddy Cue.

The largest share of the reductions reportedly involved Apple Books and the Apple Bookstore. Workers associated with Apple News and other Services groups were also affected, including some employees in engineering roles.

The exact internal breakdown was not publicly disclosed, so it is not possible to say how many positions came from Books, News, engineering, editorial, operations or other functions. “About 100” should also not be read as an exact count.
Apple Books was deprioritized, not shut down
The most important distinction is between staffing reductions and product cancellation. The available reporting did not say that Apple was closing Apple Books, ending the Apple Bookstore or removing customers’ purchased books.
Instead, Apple Books was reportedly becoming less strategically important. Reports also said Apple still planned to add features over time. That points to a product that Apple intended to maintain, but potentially with fewer dedicated employees and less investment than higher-priority Services businesses.

Why Apple Books may have been vulnerable
Apple has continued to treat Services as a major part of its business, but that does not mean every service receives the same level of investment. A profitable division can still move employees away from products that appear to offer less growth or strategic value.
Apple Books has several structural disadvantages as a growth engine:
- Its core business is largely transactional. Readers generally buy individual ebooks or audiobooks rather than paying for a broad Apple Books subscription comparable to Apple Music or Apple TV+.
- Competition is entrenched. Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem and established audiobook and ebook platforms have strong customer habits, catalogs and device relationships.
- Catalog economics are complex. Availability, pricing and margins depend heavily on publishers, authors, distributors and rights agreements.
- Its ecosystem value is less obvious. Other Services products can generate recurring subscriptions, advertising revenue or platform fees. Books may provide less direct leverage across Apple’s wider ecosystem.
These are strategic explanations for the reported decision, not an official statement from Apple. The company reportedly declined to comment, and the available reports did not establish that weak financial performance directly caused the layoffs.
Apple News was affected, but the reports did not describe an abandonment
Apple News employees were also reportedly included in the cuts. However, the reporting drew a distinction between the two products. Books was described as the main area being deprioritized, while the layoffs affecting News were not presented as evidence that Apple was abandoning or broadly retreating from the service.

That means it would be inaccurate to say that Apple eliminated its entire News team or “killed” Apple News. The reports support a narrower conclusion: some News-related positions were affected by a wider Services restructuring.
Apple News also has a different business model and strategic role from Books. A staffing reduction alone does not reveal whether Apple changed its News product roadmap, editorial strategy or subscription plans.
What happened to affected employees?
Bloomberg-based coverage said affected employees were given 60 days to seek another position within Apple before termination took effect. That was an internal-placement window, not necessarily 60 days of paid notice or a description of severance terms.

The reports did not provide a complete list of eliminated roles or explain how many workers successfully transferred to other Apple teams. Employees may also have worked across multiple Services products, making a precise product-by-product count difficult.

How large was the restructuring?
The reported reduction was notable because broad Apple layoffs are relatively unusual, but it was still a targeted cut of approximately 100 positions—not a company-wide mass layoff.
The move was described as Apple’s fourth known layoff round in 2024. Earlier reductions included cuts connected to the cancellation of the Apple Car project and the end of a microLED display effort. Those were separate restructuring events and did not all come from the Services organization.
Coverage from MacRumors and 9to5Mac placed the Services cuts in that broader 2024 restructuring context.
What the layoffs say about Apple’s Services strategy
The cuts do not necessarily mean Apple Services was performing poorly. Reporting at the time characterized Services as an important and growing contributor to Apple’s results.

The more useful interpretation is that Apple may have been reallocating people within a strategically important division. The company can continue expanding Services overall while deciding that a particular product—especially one without a large recurring subscription business—does not justify its previous staffing level.
That conclusion is an inference from the reported combination of strong Services importance and targeted cuts. Apple did not publicly explain the precise financial or organizational rationale.
What users should expect
Based on the available August 2024 reports:
- Apple Books was expected to continue operating.
- The Apple Bookstore was not reported to be closing.
- Apple was still expected to add features to Books over time.
- Apple News was affected by staffing cuts, but was not reported to be discontinued.
- There was no reported immediate change to ebook purchases, customer libraries or News subscriptions.
Later changes to either product should not automatically be attributed to these layoffs without separate evidence.

The public reports did not establish the exact number of Books versus News layoffs, which functions were eliminated, how many employees transferred internally or whether the cuts changed either product’s roadmap.
Apple’s official reasoning also remains unclear because the company reportedly declined to comment. The strongest supported conclusion is therefore limited: Apple made a targeted Services workforce reduction in August 2024, with Books and the Bookstore reportedly bearing the largest impact, while News was also affected but not described as abandoned.
