What happened
Bloomberg reported on August 28, 2024, that Apple had eliminated approximately 100 positions in its digital Services organization, which is led by Senior Vice President Eddy Cue. The figure came from people familiar with the matter and was not officially confirmed by Apple.

The largest reductions reportedly involved the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore teams. Some engineering employees and staff connected with Apple News and other Services groups were also affected. That means the reported figure should not be described as 100 Apple Books employees: it covered multiple teams and roles.

Were employees immediately terminated?
According to MacRumors’ account of the Bloomberg report, affected employees were reportedly given about 60 days to seek another position within Apple before termination became effective.
The available reporting does not establish how many employees transferred internally, what severance terms applied, or which offices and countries were involved. The 60-day period should therefore be understood as a reported detail about this restructuring, not as a confirmed Apple-wide policy.

The reporting indicated that Apple Books and the Apple Bookstore bore the largest share of the reductions. That suggests Apple Books had become a lower priority within the Services portfolio, but it does not establish that Apple had eliminated the product or its entire organization.
A product team can be reduced without the product being retired. Apple may continue operating a service with a smaller staff focused on maintenance, distribution, reliability, or selected features. The reports did not provide a complete role-by-role breakdown, so it is not possible to determine precisely which Books functions were removed.

Was Apple News being shut down?
No available reporting established that Apple News was being discontinued. Apple News employees were reportedly affected, but the cuts should not be treated as an announcement that the app or its subscription business was ending.
Contemporary accounts differed somewhat in how they interpreted the strategic meaning of the reductions. They generally described Books as receiving a lower priority, while cautioning against reading the News-related cuts as proof that Apple was abandoning Apple News. The apps continued operating after the layoffs.
Why would Apple cut Services staff while Services revenue was growing?
The answer is the difference between division-level performance and product-level investment. Apple’s Services business can grow overall while the company reallocates employees away from individual products that are considered less strategically important.
In its August 1, 2024 quarterly-results release, Apple said Services revenue reached an all-time high for the June quarter. That makes the layoffs poor evidence of a Services-wide financial crisis. Instead, they are more consistent with portfolio prioritization: resources can be shifted toward businesses and technologies Apple expects to have greater growth or strategic value.
Reuters’ account also referenced changing priorities, including a greater emphasis on artificial intelligence. However, Apple did not say that AI was the direct cause of these specific layoffs. It is more accurate to describe AI as strategic context than as a confirmed explanation.

How large were the cuts relative to Apple?
Apple reported approximately 161,000 full-time-equivalent employees as of September 30, 2023. Against that company-wide figure, 100 positions would represent a very small fraction of Apple’s workforce—roughly 0.06% if the reported figure is used as a simple comparison.

The Services division’s headcount was not disclosed in the reporting, and a reduction of about 100 positions could be significant inside particular Books, Bookstore, News, or engineering teams. The strategic signal may therefore matter more than the raw company-wide percentage.
Why the layoffs attracted attention
Layoffs have historically been less common at Apple than at many other large technology companies, which made the Services reductions notable even though they were limited in company-wide terms.
The cuts also followed other reported workforce reductions tied to major project changes in 2024, including Apple’s decision to end its car project and reductions connected with a microLED display initiative. Coverage variously described the Services cuts as the third or fourth known layoff round of the year, depending on which reductions were counted. There is no single definitive round number without defining the counting method.

There was no reported immediate loss of access to Apple Books purchases, Apple News, or News subscriptions as a result of the cuts. The available evidence does not show that either app was being shut down.

It is possible that a smaller team could affect the pace, scope, or ambition of future features. That is a reasonable operational inference, not a confirmed product roadmap. The reports did not identify specific upcoming features that were canceled or delayed.
What remains unknown
- The exact number of positions eliminated.
- The number of affected employees assigned to Books, the Bookstore, News, engineering, or shared Services functions.
- How many employees found other roles inside Apple.
- The severance terms and geographic distribution of the cuts.
- Apple’s official rationale, since the company declined to comment on the reports.
The reporting relied mainly on unnamed sources, with Reuters summarizing the Bloomberg account. There was no public Apple memo or detailed workforce filing confirming the breakdown.
What this does not mean
- It does not mean Apple Books was discontinued.
- It does not mean Apple News was discontinued.
- It does not prove that Apple’s Services business was shrinking or in financial trouble.
- It does not establish that artificial intelligence directly caused the layoffs.
- It does not mean every affected employee was immediately terminated.
Why investors and Apple users should separate the signals
For investors, the key distinction is between strong aggregate Services performance and changing investment decisions inside the portfolio. Record Services revenue does not require Apple to maintain staffing at the same level in every digital-content product.
For users, the more practical distinction is between a staffing change and a product-retirement announcement. Apple Books and Apple News may receive different levels of investment in the future, but the August 2024 reports did not announce their closure.
