Bloomberg reporting summarized by MacRumors described new leaders for key Siri teams and a planned shift to an LLM-based architecture. The reported changes explain Apple’s response to the delay; they do not establish that the rebuilt assistant later shipped or met its promises.
What Apple’s Siri overhaul was responding to
The problem was the delayed Siri revamp, not a demonstrated failure of every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple had shown a more capable assistant at WWDC 2024, including more natural interaction, awareness of personal context, better understanding of requests, and the ability to take actions across apps. Those capabilities proved difficult to deliver as presented.
Some Apple Intelligence tools, including writing, image-editing, and summarization features, were separate from the delayed Siri capabilities. Calling the episode an “Apple Intelligence failure” can therefore overstate what the reporting establishes: it describes a serious delivery and execution problem with the promised Siri upgrades.
How Siri’s leadership changed
The reported reorganization unfolded in stages. Mike Rockwell, who led software work associated with Vision Pro, took charge of Siri in March 2025. John Giannandrea, previously the senior executive overseeing Siri, was reportedly shifted to an AI research role rather than continuing as Siri’s direct leader. Rockwell then reassigned or replaced managers and brought Vision Pro software executives into key parts of the Siri effort.

On April 22, 2025, Bloomberg’s reporting, summarized by MacRumors and indexed by Techmeme, described the wider reshuffle. It was a reported internal arrangement, not an Apple-announced organization chart; responsibilities below should be read as reported assignments, not necessarily formal public titles.
Who was reportedly assigned to Siri
| Executive | Reported area of responsibility |
|---|---|
| Ranjit Desai | Siri engineering, including platform and systems groups. |
| Olivier Gutknecht | Siri user-experience design. |
| Nate Begeman | Siri engineering and underlying architecture responsibilities. |
| Tom Duffy | Siri’s underlying architecture. |
| Geoff Stahl | Oversight of teams previously led by executives moved to Siri. |
Rockwell was also reported to continue overseeing visionOS while working on Siri. Vision Pro hardware continued to report to John Ternus, according to the same account. The available reporting does not establish that every affected manager left Apple or specify the exact number of managers reassigned.

Why bring Vision Pro software leaders into Siri?
The reported personnel choices suggest Apple wanted experienced software leaders for a problem that appeared to involve more than adding a few assistant commands. Vision Pro software work involves operating-system architecture, interaction design, and coordination across system components—skills that could be relevant to an assistant expected to understand context and carry out actions across apps. Bloomberg’s reported rationale was that Rockwell was drawing on strong software engineering talent to accelerate Siri and address execution problems.
That explanation is an inference from the reported assignments, not a confirmed public statement of Apple’s reasoning. The trade-off is also real: moving leaders from visionOS could disrupt that organization, or signal that Apple had made Siri the more urgent priority. A leadership change alone cannot resolve model quality, testing, product definition, or integration problems.

The reported plan was to rebuild Siri’s architecture
The reporting described a planned LLM-based rearchitecture, which is more consequential than adding a layer of generative responses to the existing assistant. A conventional update might improve speech recognition or add app commands. An LLM-centered system could change how Siri interprets natural-language requests, maintains context, chooses system or app actions, combines steps, and presents answers.
That flexibility brings engineering and safety challenges. An assistant can misunderstand an ambiguous request, invent information, initiate the wrong action, or behave inconsistently across apps. App permissions and privacy boundaries also matter when an assistant uses personal context or acts on a user’s behalf. The reporting did not specify Apple’s model, system design, benchmarks, latency, or reliability targets, so none can be inferred from the LLM description alone.

Why developers matter to the promised capabilities
Cross-app task completion depends on more than Apple’s own models and operating-system code. Siri needs ways to invoke app functions, respect permissions, handle failures, and return useful results. Bloomberg’s report said Apple planned to work with third-party developers on app integration. That makes delivery an ecosystem problem: even a capable assistant needs dependable interfaces and developer participation to act across apps.

Credibility with users and developers
A public demonstration creates an expectation that a feature is sufficiently developed to become real, even if it does not set a precise release date. The gap between the WWDC 2024 presentation and delayed delivery risked weakening confidence in Apple’s ability to turn its AI announcements into working products.

Competitive pressure
As other companies emphasized conversational AI and task completion, a delayed Siri revamp left Apple’s assistant visibly behind the ambitions Apple had presented. The issue was not only whether Siri could answer questions, but whether it could reliably understand context and do useful work.
What the reported overhaul does—and does not—show
The April 2025 account supports a clear conclusion: Apple responded to delayed Siri features with a leadership reshuffle and a reported plan to replace or substantially rebuild the assistant’s technical foundation. It does not show that the new structure succeeded, establish a definitive launch date, or prove that the eventual product matched the WWDC 2024 demonstrations.
For later outcomes, the distinction matters. The reporting records internal plans and assignments as described in April 2025; it is not evidence of Siri’s final architecture, subsequent performance, or the delivery status of the full promised feature set by August 18, 2026.
