No: “Apple accepts only Net Banking and UPI” is not a reliable blanket rule for India. The disruption concerned App Store purchases and Apple-service billing, especially recurring card payments—not Apple’s entire business. Apple’s India support guidance lists UPI Autopay or Apple Account balance for new subscriptions, UPI or balance for other purchases, and Net Banking, UPI, cards or App Store Codes for adding balance. July 2026 reports also described a phased return of card payments for some App Store and iCloud users, but they do not establish that cards work for every account.
What changed—and why the old headline is incomplete
Apple’s payment changes in India were about particular digital transactions, not a single ban on cards across all Apple products. The key disruption involved recurring card billing for auto-renewing subscriptions and other App Store or Apple-service purchases.

On September 29, 2021, Apple told developers that new regulatory requirements for recurring card transactions could result in declined payments for auto-renewable subscriptions purchased in India. The requirements involved advance customer authorization, e-mandates and additional authentication; they did not amount to an RBI order specifically telling Apple to remove every card. Apple’s notice is at Apple Developer. The RBI’s circular on recurring-transaction e-mandates is available at RBI.
Apple’s India support guidance, published June 10, 2026, now describes different methods by transaction type. Then, July 2026 reports said eligible credit and debit card payments were returning for some App Store and iCloud users in a phased rollout. Those reports are not confirmation of universal card availability, and Apple’s published payment guidance does not say every Indian account can pay directly by card. Which Apple payment are you trying to make?

The table reflects Apple’s published India guidance, not a guarantee that every method will appear for every account or purchase. In particular, a card being offered to add account funds does not prove it is available for direct subscription billing. Card support reported in July 2026 may also vary by account and card eligibility.
UPI and UPI Autopay are not interchangeable
UPI is a way to authorize an eligible one-time payment. UPI Autopay sets up a recurring mandate for a subscription. You authenticate that mandate through your UPI payment app; your bank must support UPI Autopay, and the linked account needs sufficient funds when payments are due. A one-time UPI payment does not itself authorize future renewals. Apple’s payment guidance explains the available routes at support.apple.com.

How to add or change a payment method
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name or Apple Account.
- Tap Payment & Shipping. If the label differs, check the Apple Account’s Media & Purchases settings.
- Tap Add Payment Method, choose an option shown for your account, and complete any bank or UPI-app authentication.
- To change the order or remove a method, return to the payment-method screen and use the controls shown there.
Apple’s India payment-method setup guide is at learn.applepay.apple/indiapaymentmethods. The available choices may depend on your account, transaction and payment eligibility. If a card appears only when adding funds, treat it as a balance-funding option—not evidence of direct card billing.

Set up UPI Autopay for a new subscription
Choose UPI Autopay from the available payment methods and approve the mandate in the UPI app. Check that the bank account and app support mandates and that the account can cover renewals. This is the recurring-payment option; ordinary UPI is not a substitute for the mandate.

Fund Apple Account balance
Apple lists Net Banking, UPI, accepted cards and App Store Codes as ways to add funds. Balance can pay for eligible purchases, and Apple says existing subscriptions can continue using it. Add enough before the next billing date; loading a card-funded balance is distinct from charging a subscription directly to that card. Use Apple or an authorized retailer for App Store Codes, and check the code’s country or region restrictions before redeeming it.
If a payment fails or an option is missing
- UPI Autopay setup fails: Confirm your bank supports the mandate, finish authentication in the UPI app and check the linked account’s funds. Apple advises contacting the financial institution if the problem persists.
- Your card is missing or declined: Card restoration was reported as phased, not universal. A card network or issuer may not be eligible; July reporting specifically referred to eligible Visa and Mastercard cards, not every Indian or foreign-issued card. Check the payment screen for your own account.
- Net Banking is not offered for a subscription: Apple lists it as a way to add Apple Account funds; its published guidance does not present it as the main direct recurring-subscription method.
- Your account region differs from India: Payment methods depend on the Apple Account’s country or region. Use a payment method valid for that region rather than using a false address or location workaround.
- There is an unpaid balance: Resolve the outstanding amount and follow any request to update billing before retrying a purchase or subscription.
- You use Family Sharing: The organizer’s payment setup may govern shared purchases. Check the organizer’s billing method if changing your own method does not resolve the charge.
- The payment method looks correct but the transaction still fails: Check for an incomplete UPI approval, insufficient funds, a bank or payment-app issue, or a temporary connectivity problem. The failure may not be an iOS issue.
Buying Apple hardware is a separate checkout
Apple’s India Online Store separately lists credit cards, debit cards, EMI (including no-cost EMI where eligible), Net Banking, UPI and limited payment on delivery. Payment on delivery is not available for every PIN code or for orders above ₹50,000. Where offered, the courier’s payment link supports cash, e-wallet, UPI, Net Banking and cards. Check Apple’s Online Store payment page for the applicable terms. These retail options do not determine which methods are available for App Store billing.

What card support means for your account
The decisive check is the payment-method screen for the Apple Account and transaction you are trying to use. Apple’s official guidance specifies UPI, UPI Autopay and balance by transaction type; July 2026 media reports describe card payments returning for some users, not a confirmed universal policy. If you do not see direct card billing, use a method Apple offers for that purchase rather than assuming another customer’s options will match yours.
