Neither wallet is automatically safer or more convenient for every online purchase. Both can reduce the need to enter card details manually, but you can use one only when the merchant offers it and your card, account, region, browser, and device qualify. Apple describes a web-payment flow that sends a Device Account Number and transaction-specific security code instead of the actual card number; Google Pay can use virtual cards or, through its web API, different card credential types depending on eligibility and merchant setup.
How Apple Pay and Google Pay protect card details
Both services describe ways to avoid exposing an ordinary card number during checkout. Their mechanisms are not identical, and the Google Pay credential path can vary. These protections reduce card-number exposure; they do not guarantee that a transaction is legitimate or that a purchase will be approved.
Apple Pay: Device Account Number and dynamic code
For the online and in-app flow it describes, Apple says the app or website does not receive the actual payment card number. Instead, it receives a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code, which the issuer, bank, or network can check. Apple says payment data is encrypted and re-encrypted for a developer-specific key before being sent to the developer or processor. A website offering Apple Pay must verify its domain. See Apple’s security and privacy overview and Apple Pay on the Web documentation.
Google Pay: virtual cards or API payment credentials
Google’s consumer help describes virtual cards used with Chrome autofill for online and in-app purchases: a randomly generated number stands in for the actual card number. Separately, Google’s web API returns signed and encrypted payment data. Depending on merchant configuration and the shopper’s eligibility, that data can contain a PAN or tokenized card credentials consisting of a device PAN and cryptogram. Tokenized credentials are not available for every card, issuer, country, device, or processor setup. See Google’s payment-information safety guidance and its Google Pay API FAQ.

What these protections do—and do not—mean
Masked or tokenized credentials are not a blanket defense against account compromise, merchant disputes, fraud, or issuer declines. Google’s API guidance says merchants should apply their usual 3-D Secure treatment to PAN_ONLY transactions as appropriate, and its fraud tools do not replace a merchant’s own risk management. The official descriptions support comparing credential handling, not declaring one wallet the universal security winner. See Google’s API tutorial.
Which one works at a particular checkout?
The merchant’s checkout is the first deciding factor: it must have implemented and chosen to display the wallet for that purchase. A provider supporting a browser or payment API does not mean every online store will show its button. Apple’s web setup requires merchant registration and domain verification; Google provides merchant readiness and integration checks. See Apple’s implementation guidance and Google’s integration checklist.
After that, availability depends on your wallet setup, eligible card and issuer, country, browser, device, and any required authorization step. Browser compatibility is not the same as personal eligibility.

Browser and device compatibility
Apple Pay on the web
Apple documents Apple Pay JS and the Payment Request API for supported Safari web payments. A participating site must satisfy Apple Pay requirements, including HTTPS, merchant registration, and domain verification. Apple also documents a cross-device route in which a compatible merchant can start Apple Pay in a third-party browser on a computer or tablet; authorization is then completed on an Apple Pay-capable iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later. That flow uses a scanned code and encrypted relay, so it depends on both the merchant’s implementation and suitable authorizing hardware. Details are in Apple Platform Security and Apple Pay on the Web.
Google Pay on the web
Google’s web API setup documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and UCWeb UC Browser. The page must use HTTPS with a TLS domain-validated certificate. These are developer support statements, not a promise that every browser, device, card, and account combination will show Google Pay at every merchant. Google’s integration checklist also calls for testing current supported browsers on desktop, Android, and iOS; tokenized-card availability is limited to some countries, with additional Android and Google Play services conditions for tokenized-card testing. See Google Pay API setup and its integration checklist.
Convenience: compare your setup, not a universal speed claim
Either wallet can save typing when it is already configured and appears at checkout. The practical difference is whether you have an eligible card set up and can complete the wallet’s authorization—on the same device or, in Apple’s documented cross-device flow, on another Apple device. There is no basis here for claiming that one is always faster; merchant design and the authorization steps matter.

- Wallet already set up: If the checkout displays your configured wallet, it may spare you from entering card details into the merchant’s form.
- Authorization required: Be ready to confirm the payment using the method your device or wallet requests. A handoff or second device can change the feel of checkout.
- Wallet button missing: Check whether the merchant accepts it for this purchase, then check your region, card and issuer eligibility, browser, and wallet setup.
Privacy disclosures are specific, not a simple ranking
Apple says it retains anonymous transaction information—including approximate purchase amount, app developer or name, approximate time, and success status—to improve Apple Pay and related services. Apple also says apps and websites using Apple Pay in Safari must have a privacy policy. See Apple’s security and privacy overview.
Google says participating sites and apps may learn whether Google Pay is set up on a device so they can decide whether to offer it. Users can opt out in Google Pay privacy settings, though doing so may affect transactions with some merchants. Google also says transaction data may be used to facilitate transactions, show history, resolve issues, and provide Google Pay features. See Google’s payment-information safety guidance.

Why a wallet might not appear
A missing button does not by itself show that your card or device is incompatible. Work through the likely causes in this order:
- Check merchant acceptance: Look at the payment methods presented by the specific checkout. Merchant integration determines which wallets are offered.
- Check wallet and card setup: Confirm the wallet is configured and the card and issuer are eligible for that payment flow.
- Check location and software: Regional availability, browser capability, device, and current software can affect eligibility.
- Check authorization and privacy settings: Apple’s cross-device method requires compatible Apple hardware and merchant support. Google says opting out of sharing wallet setup status with participating sites can affect the ability to transact with some merchants.
Google describes readiness checks for merchants rather than a universal guarantee to shoppers, and its tokenized-card availability is limited by country and setup. For merchant-specific implementation details, see Google’s setup documentation.
