In January 2023, Apple offered $970 in trade-in value for a specific 2019 Mac Pro that had been priced at $52,199. That was about 1.86% of its original price—but it was an Apple trade-in quote, not proof that every 2019 Mac Pro is worth less than $1,000 or that this was its cash resale value.
What happened with the $52,199 Mac Pro?
David Imel, a researcher for Marques Brownlee’s technology channel, said he priced the office’s high-end Mac Pro through Apple Trade In. BGR and TechSpot reported the quote on January 18, 2023, quoting Imel’s January 17 post:
“I tried pricing out our $52,199 Mac Pro’s at the office for trade-in, which you can still buy from Apple, $52,199.”
The reported Apple offer was $970. Dividing that quote by the machine’s $52,199 price gives about 1.86%; the difference is approximately 98.14%. TechSpot described the drop as more than 98% depreciation. The 2019 Mac Pro started at $5,999, according to TechSpot, while top configurations could exceed $50,000.

Imel also asked: “What else has dropped 50x in value in 3 years… besides crypto?” The comparison captured the shock of the quote, but it does not establish a general depreciation rate for Mac Pros: the reports describe one high-end configuration and one trade-in offer, not a study of completed sales.
Why is my Mac Pro trade-in value so low?
Apple Trade In is a convenient recovery offer, not a public auction or a guaranteed measure of what another buyer will pay. Apple says estimated trade-in value depends on the device, model, manufacturer and condition. For a Mac, Apple requires the serial number to provide an accurate estimate, and the value can change after inspection. See Apple Trade In.

A costly configuration does not necessarily translate into a correspondingly high trade-in offer. Apple’s offer reflects its own assessment and resale or recycling economics; the 2023 reports do not identify which component or valuation factor drove the $970 quote. They noted that Apple still listed the same high-end configuration at its original price when the quote was reported, making the contrast unusually stark—but that original listing was not evidence of what a used unit would sell for.
How much is a 2019 Mac Pro worth?
There is no single value established by this quote. The $970 figure applies to the particular machine and Apple Trade In estimate reported in January 2023. It should not be treated as a current offer, a cash-sale price, or the value of every 2019 Mac Pro. Configuration, condition, buyer demand and the sale channel can all matter; the reports do not provide a verified private-sale comparison or a broader market dataset.

Should I sell my Mac Pro privately or trade it in?
Choose based on the outcome you want. Apple Trade In can be simpler; selling directly may expose the machine to buyers who specifically want its Intel-era expansion, but it requires finding a buyer and handling the transaction. No verified open-market sale for the $52,199 configuration was reported, so a private sale should not be assumed to deliver a particular amount.
| Consideration | Apple Trade In | Private sale |
|---|---|---|
| Potential payout | An Apple estimate based on device details and condition; the final value can change after inspection. | Set by buyer demand and negotiation; no comparable completed sale was established in the January 2023 reports. |
| Form of payment | Eligible devices may receive purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card. Business trade-ins may be paid by ACH and can differ from consumer offers. | Cash or another agreed payment method, subject to the transaction. |
| Convenience and timing | Trade-in through Apple; the source material does not establish a universal payment timeline. | You must list or otherwise find a buyer, communicate, and arrange payment and handoff. |
| Inspection and price changes | Apple may revise the estimate after inspection. | The buyer may negotiate after reviewing the Mac; agree on the condition and terms before handing it over. |
| Fees, shipping and privacy | Confirm the current program terms for your device and transaction; erase your data before transfer. | Account for any listing, payment or shipping costs, and erase your data before transfer. |
For either route, back up your files, sign out of accounts and erase the Mac before giving it away. If comparing offers, use the exact model, serial number, configuration and condition, and distinguish credit from cash. A buyer seeking PCIe, GPU or storage expansion may value features that a broad trade-in program does not price in the same way, but that possibility is not a promise of a higher offer.

Is Apple Trade In the same as resale value?
No. Apple’s quote answers what Apple is willing to offer under its program rules for a device that matches the submitted details and passes inspection. Resale value describes what a buyer might actually pay in a separate transaction. The January 2023 reports establish the first figure for one specific machine; they do not establish the second.
Apple says eligible devices can generate purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card, while devices it does not accept for trade-in can still be recycled for free. Its current program details and eligibility rules are on Apple’s Trade In page.
