The Apple butterfly-keyboard settlement is real, but payments did not just begin: the settlement administrator says an additional distribution was sent on or about February 23, 2026, to certain people who had already received and successfully negotiated an initial payment. New claims are closed, and the deadline to request a reissue of a residual payment has passed. Owning a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard alone did not qualify someone for compensation.
What the settlement covered
The U.S. case, In re MacBook Keyboard Litigation, Case No. 5:18-cv-02813-EJD-VKD, concerned allegations that butterfly keyboards in certain MacBooks could produce repeating or missing characters, sticky keys, or keys that did not respond consistently. Those were allegations, not a court finding that Apple’s keyboards were defective. Apple denied the allegations and admitted no wrongdoing; the court approved the settlement on May 25, 2023. The settlement documents and official FAQ describe the case and terms.
Apple agreed to fund a $50 million settlement. That was the gross fund, not an amount available to divide equally among all owners: attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, notice and administration costs, service awards, and reserves were addressed under the settlement terms. The settlement materials on fund allocation explain those deductions and set-asides.

Who qualified
The class covered qualifying purchasers in the United States of specified MacBook models sold from 2015 through 2019. Eligibility depended on the particular model and qualifying keyboard repair history—not just owning a MacBook from those years. The settlement’s model list and eligibility FAQ provide the detailed configurations.
Covered model families
- 12-inch MacBook Retina: Early 2015, Early 2016, and 2017.
- 13-inch MacBook Air Retina: 2018 and 2019.
- 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro: eligible 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 configurations.
To check a Mac’s model, select Apple menu → About This Mac. Apple’s coverage lookup can also identify a computer by serial number. The settlement FAQ, rather than the year alone, determines whether a specific configuration was covered.
#1 Best Overall
- Only 0.11mm thin — thin enough that your fingers glide naturally without extra effort. The precision-molded shape hugs every key so tightly you'll forget it's there, yet still lets the backlight shine through clearly. Designed for US ANSI MacBook Pro 14"/16" and Air 13"/15" (M1-M5).
- Precision-engineered to sit flush across every key, so the cover stays in place even during fast typing. Won't leave marks or imprints on your MacBook screen when closing the lid — no grease stains, no residue, no hassle. Just peel, place, and type.
- Made from premium engineering-grade TPU — flexible yet durable enough to handle daily wear. Seals out dust, crumbs, pet hair, and accidental spills before they get trapped under your keys. Touch ID still works seamlessly; the material is thin enough not to interfere.
- Snap it on in under 30 seconds — no sticky adhesive, no complicated alignment. Completely washable with soap and water; dry it off and it's good as new. Reuse it for months without peeling or losing shape.
- Choose from Clear, Translucent Tinted, or Smokey (surround Touch ID) — each lets the backlight glow through naturally. The matte finish resists fingerprints and oil buildup, keeping your keyboard looking crisp longer.
Qualifying repairs and timing
The recognized repairs were a topcase replacement, which replaces the complete keyboard module, or a replacement of one or more keycaps. The repair generally had to be performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider within four years of purchase. A repair by an independent shop should not be assumed to qualify.
Group 1 generally required at least two qualifying topcase replacements. Groups 2 and 3 required a qualifying repair that did not resolve the problem, a declaration to that effect, and a claim filed by the deadline. The class included eligible individuals and entities, subject to exclusions; current ownership by itself was not enough.

Payment groups and amounts
The amounts below are approved category payments reported in the court’s 2024 payment order, not a promise that every MacBook owner—or every person who experienced a keyboard problem—would receive money. The order lists the category calculations and recipient counts.
| Group | Qualifying circumstances | Approved payment per eligible computer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | At least two qualifying topcase replacements within four years of purchase; payment was generally based on Apple’s records. | $395 |
| 2 | One qualifying topcase replacement, a declaration that it did not resolve the problem, and a timely claim. | $125 |
| 3 | One or more qualifying keycap replacements, a declaration that the repair did not resolve the problem, and a timely claim. | $50 |
The 2024 order reported 63,069 Group 1 class members at $395, a future reserve for 300 additional Group 1 members at $395, 64,686 Group 2 members at $125, and 4,773 Group 3 members at $50. It listed a principal distribution total of $33,664,515, with additional reserves for late and duplicate claims. These figures describe that court-approved distribution, not a new pool open to claims.

Payment timeline and current status
- March 6, 2023: Deadline to file an ordinary claim.
- May 25, 2023: Final approval of the settlement.
- 2024: Initial payment administration and distributions proceeded.
- January 20, 2026: Court order approving distribution of remaining settlement funds.
- On or about February 23, 2026: The administrator says an additional residual payment was sent to eligible class members who had successfully negotiated an initial payment.
The administrator says the initial distribution is complete and the deadline to request a reissue of a residual payment has passed. See the current settlement notice and official case dates. “Apple starts paying” is therefore misleading if it suggests a new August 2026 payment program.
Can you file a claim now?
No. The ordinary claim deadline was March 6, 2023, and the official claim page says it has passed. A person who never filed should not expect to submit a new claim now, even if their computer and repair history otherwise appear to fit the settlement.

Likewise, the current settlement notice says the reissue deadline for residual payments has passed. If you expected a payment or have a question about an old notice, consult the administrator’s official contact page. The administrator—not an Apple Store—is the relevant contact for settlement claims and payment administration. Do not rely on an unsolicited message or assume that a lost, returned, stale, or misdirected check can still be replaced.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the settlement does not mean
- It does not mean every owner of a 2015–2019 MacBook was compensated; a qualifying model, repair history, and applicable claim requirements mattered.
- It does not mean Apple admitted fault or that a court found the keyboards defective.
- It does not mean a payment necessarily matched a claimant’s repair costs; the settlement set fixed category amounts.
- It is separate from Apple’s keyboard service program, which provided four years of protection for covered keyboard issues and was not a cash payout. Apple’s program information is at Apple Support.
- It is the U.S. settlement; Canadian purchasers were not automatically covered. Quebec had a separate proceeding, with its own eligibility and deadlines: Quebec keyboard class action site.
How to avoid settlement-payment scams
Class-action payment stories can attract fake notices. Navigate to the official settlement domain yourself to verify current status, rather than following links in an unsolicited email or text. Do not provide banking or identity information through a message claiming to reopen claims or reissue a payment unless the administrator’s official materials confirm the request.
