That does not prove that all 614 workers came from the car team. Contemporary reporting linked most of the affected locations to Project Titan but also identified employees working on other projects, including next-generation displays.

What Apple actually canceled
Apple ended its effort to develop and eventually launch its own electric vehicle with autonomous-driving capabilities. The project was widely known as Project Titan and had reportedly been in development since around 2014.

This was not the cancellation of a production car that Apple had officially unveiled. Apple had not announced a final vehicle design, retail price, manufacturing partner, confirmed launch date, or production schedule. Reports described changing concepts that ranged from a highly autonomous vehicle with an unusually spacious interior to a more conventional electric car with advanced driver-assistance features.

The decision also should not be interpreted as proof that Apple abandoned every automotive-related initiative. Ending its own-vehicle program is different from ending software integration, CarPlay, or other technology intended for use in third-party vehicles.
TechCrunch reported that Project Titan’s ambitions and technology plans changed repeatedly, including possible partnerships with established automakers or contract manufacturers.
When did Apple announce the cancellation?
Apple executives Jeff Williams, the company’s chief operating officer, and Kevin Lynch, who oversaw the car effort, reportedly informed employees on February 27, 2024.

That detail comes from an anonymous source and should be treated as reported rather than independently verified.
Apple did not publish a detailed public explanation of the decision and declined to comment in the cited coverage. As a result, explanations involving cost, leadership changes, technical obstacles, and the strategic importance of AI come from reporting and informed context rather than an official Apple postmortem.

What happened to Project Titan employees?
The cancellation did not mean that every person associated with the project was immediately dismissed.
- Some employees were reportedly moved toward generative-AI work. Machine-learning and software specialists were considered useful as Apple increased its focus on AI.
- Hardware engineers and vehicle designers were encouraged to seek other Apple positions.
- Some workers reportedly had about 90 days to find an internal role before losing their jobs.
- Other employees were laid off as the program was wound down.
Reported estimates of Project Titan’s staffing differed. Bloomberg described nearly 2,000 employees working on the effort at the time of the cancellation, while TechCrunch cited an estimate of about 1,400. Earlier reports said the project may have reached roughly 5,000 workers. These figures are estimates, not an official Apple headcount, and may reflect different dates or definitions of the team.
How many Apple workers were laid off?
The clearest public number comes from California Employment Development Department WARN records. The filings list 614 permanent layoffs at eight Santa Clara locations. Apple’s notices were received on March 28, 2024, and the layoffs were effective May 27, 2024.

The official California WARN report identifies the employer, locations, number of affected workers, and permanent-layoff classification. It does not identify each employee’s project assignment.
That limitation matters. Reporting by TechCrunch linked most of the affected facilities to Project Titan but said some workers were connected to Apple’s screen-development work. The most accurate description is therefore that Apple later filed WARN notices covering 614 California layoffs, most of which were reportedly associated with the car and related projects—not that Apple laid off exactly 614 car workers.

Why did Apple abandon the car?
Apple did not provide a detailed official reason, but the available reporting points to a cumulative strategic problem rather than one isolated failure.

Project Titan reportedly moved between very different objectives. Earlier concepts involved a highly autonomous vehicle, potentially without conventional controls and with a spacious, limousine-like interior. Later plans were reportedly scaled back toward an electric vehicle with more conventional advanced driver assistance.
That kind of change affects nearly every part of development: sensors, computing hardware, software validation, vehicle architecture, safety testing, manufacturing, regulatory approval, and the customer experience.
Autonomous driving is unusually difficult
A consumer product can sometimes be improved through software updates after launch. A vehicle still has to meet demanding safety standards before it reaches customers, and autonomous-driving systems must be validated across enormous combinations of roads, weather, traffic, construction, and human behavior.
Apple reportedly continued testing autonomous vehicles in California shortly before the cancellation. The Washington Post reported that Apple had 67 autonomous test vehicles registered in the state and that one was still being tested on a Sunnyvale highway about two weeks before the announcement. Continued testing, however, did not mean that the project was close to production; technology programs can continue validation work while executives decide whether the underlying business case is viable.

Building a car requires capabilities beyond software
Even if Apple outsourced assembly, it would still have to manage vehicle design validation, crash compliance, battery engineering, thermal management, supply-chain execution, quality control, warranty obligations, servicing, recalls, and liability.
Those responsibilities differ significantly from designing phones, computers, watches, and other consumer electronics. Automobiles also have longer development cycles and much higher costs when defects or delays occur.
The launch timeline kept slipping
Earlier reports floated possible launch windows around 2024 or 2025. Later reporting described a possible delay to 2028 and a reduced level of autonomy. These were reported targets or internal ambitions, not confirmed Apple launch dates.
Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com described pressure on the project to produce a commercially viable product sooner. Repeated delays and changes in scope likely made it harder to justify the investment required for a new vehicle category.
AI became a more attractive priority
Generative AI had become a major strategic focus across the technology industry. Reports said Apple planned to redirect some Project Titan employees to AI-related work. That does not mean every transferred worker joined a specific announced AI product, but it does show how the company chose to redeploy some specialized talent after ending the vehicle effort.

The shift was likely an opportunity-cost decision: continuing to fund a complex, uncertain vehicle program meant fewer resources for an area Apple’s leadership viewed as increasingly important.

- The cited sources do not establish a precise Project Titan budget, although contemporary reports described it as a multibillion-dollar effort.
- The WARN filings do not prove that all 614 affected workers were assigned to the car project.
- There is no cited evidence that Apple sold or licensed the entire project.
- The cancellation does not prove that Apple ended every automotive software or vehicle-integration effort.
The broader electric-vehicle and autonomous-driving sectors were also reassessing costs, demand, and timelines when Apple made its decision. But the available reporting does not support saying that a collapse in EV demand alone caused the cancellation. Apple’s internal execution challenges intersected with a difficult external market.

Why this matters for Apple’s business
Project Titan represented a major attempt to enter a new hardware category. A successful Apple vehicle could have created a large long-term business, but it would also have exposed the company to manufacturing complexity, safety liability, expensive service obligations, and years of investment before meaningful revenue.
Ending the project limits those risks and frees employees and capital for other priorities. It also illustrates a less visible cost of large technology bets: even when a company has substantial cash and engineering talent, expertise in consumer electronics does not automatically transfer to regulated, safety-critical manufacturing.
For workers, the outcome was mixed. Some may have continued at Apple in AI or other groups, while others lost their jobs. The 614 California layoffs provide an official later count, but they should be understood as a location-based employment record rather than a complete project-by-project accounting.
