Antonio Juliano’s dYdX CEO transition was announced on May 13, 2024—not in 2026. He stepped down as CEO of dYdX Trading Inc., became Chairman and President, and named longtime colleague Ivo Crnkovic-Rubsamen as his successor. Juliano later announced that he had returned as CEO, making the original headline incomplete without the follow-up.
What happened when Antonio Juliano stepped down?
In a post published May 13, 2024, dYdX founder Antonio Juliano said he was leaving the CEO role at dYdX Trading Inc. and moving into the roles of Chairman and President. He named Ivo Crnkovic-Rubsamen as the incoming CEO. The announcement was a change in leadership at the operating company, not a statement that Juliano was leaving dYdX altogether. Juliano’s announcement describes the transition.

Why did Juliano step down?
Juliano presented the move as a distinction between the work of a founder and the work of a CEO. In his account, the founder sets vision, shapes culture, and pursues the long-term direction; the CEO organizes the team and oversees day-to-day execution. He said he had been stepping back from operating responsibilities and believed Crnkovic-Rubsamen was ready to run the company.

The announcement framed the change as a leadership and personal-development choice, not as an exit from the company.

Who was Ivo Crnkovic-Rubsamen?
Crnkovic-Rubsamen was an internal successor, whom Juliano described as a longtime friend and partner in running dYdX. Juliano said he had been preparing him and other leaders for greater responsibility and believed Crnkovic-Rubsamen could take over operational leadership. The announcement does not provide a detailed biography, compensation information, or an account of a formal board selection process.
Did Juliano give up control of dYdX?
He gave up the CEO title, but his announcement described a continuing, influential role. Juliano said he would remain closely involved, work with Crnkovic-Rubsamen, and continue driving major decisions and strategy. That distinguishes the formal operating job from his stated founder influence; it does not, by itself, establish the legal division of authority among company leadership, the board, shareholders, the Foundation, or the DAO.

When did Juliano return as CEO?
On October 10, 2024, Juliano announced in “The Return” that he had come back as CEO and intended to lead in “Founder Mode.” He said dYdX had faced a challenging year amid competition and market pressure, and that he believed the company needed revitalization. This is the key follow-up: the May transition did not permanently remove Juliano from operational leadership. The return announcement does not establish why the earlier arrangement ended or what Crnkovic-Rubsamen’s subsequent role was.
What changed at dYdX after the return?
Later organizational changes provide context for dYdX’s direction, but do not prove that the 2024 CEO transition caused them.

- June 2025: dYdX Trading announced it had acquired business functions from the dYdX Foundation, including marketing, business development, and solutions, to align growth work more closely with product and engineering. The company’s June 2 announcement and the Foundation’s June 3 explanation describe the organizational change.
These developments point to restructuring and renewed operational focus. They should not be treated as evidence that Crnkovic-Rubsamen’s appointment failed; the available announcements do not make that claim.
Does the CEO change affect the DYDX token or protocol?
Not automatically. The 2024 appointment concerned dYdX Trading Inc. The broader ecosystem also includes the dYdX Foundation, the dYdX Chain, and DAO governance. The Foundation describes its role in terms of governance, DAO enablement, ecosystem adoption, communications, and the DYDX token in its account of the team transition.

A company CEO change alone does not establish a change in protocol control, token governance, or token value. The cited announcements do not provide market or on-chain evidence of a token-price reaction.

What the transition meant for dYdX
An internal handoff can preserve institutional knowledge and allow a founder to focus on long-term direction while another executive manages daily operations. But Juliano’s promised continued involvement meant the change was not a clean separation between founder and operator. His return months later also shows that the initial succession was not a lasting transfer of the CEO role. The announcements establish the sequence of titles and decisions, not whether the arrangement improved execution or how authority was divided behind the scenes.
