That language naturally raises questions about the tensions inside fast-moving AI companies. But the letter leaves the relevant pressures unspecified. Readers should distinguish between a statement of concern and an allegation of a documented event:
- Supported: Sharma warned about AI and wider risks, and wrote about values and pressure.

Sharma’s research record helps explain why his words carried weight. His public research profile describes work on frontier-model safeguards, post-deployment monitoring, automated red-teaming, sycophancy, and jailbreaks. He is also an author of the 2025 preprint Constitutional Classifiers, which examines defenses intended to resist universal jailbreaks, including harmful multi-step processes. Under the paper’s stated evaluation conditions, the work reported more than 3,000 estimated hours of red-teaming.
That background establishes expertise in the kinds of safety controls that matter when powerful AI systems reach users. It does not, however, reveal why he resigned. A research biography is context, not evidence of the cause of an employment decision.
Why the letter is being called cryptic
The description is about form as much as substance.
