12 Hyaluronic Acid Serums: A Dermatologist-Informed Shopping Guide

A dermatologist-informed guide to 12 hyaluronic acid serums, including who each formula may suit, how to use HA correctly and what product claims can—and cannot—tell you.

Hyaluronic acid serums are best viewed as hydration helpers, not miracle treatments. This guide identifies 12 current options by formula and use case, then shows how to use one without mistaking marketing language for medical evidence.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) serums can be a useful hydration step, but the best choice is usually the one whose texture, added ingredients and fragrance profile fit your skin and routine—not the one with the most dramatic “plumping” claim. Topical HA can help skin feel more hydrated and look temporarily smoother or suppler. It is not a replacement for moisturizer, sunscreen, prescription care, or injectable hyaluronic-acid fillers.

This is a dermatologist-informed shopping guide: the skin-care advice reflects guidance from dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), while the product details below come from current brand or retailer descriptions. It is not a list of products individually tested, prescribed or endorsed by every dermatologist.

How to choose without overpaying for a claim

HA is a humectant: it attracts and holds water at the skin’s surface. That is why it can be a worthwhile part of a routine when skin feels tight, looks dehydrated or needs a more comfortable finish under makeup. The AAD includes hyaluronic acid among ingredients that can help with dry skin, while also emphasizing the importance of moisturizer and daily sun protection.

#1 Best Overall
Coera Hyaluronic Acid Serum | 8 fl oz | Moisturizing and Hydrating
  • FLAWLESS FORMULA: Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a gentle moisturizer that supports a natural shine
  • PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH: Expertly crafted serum designed for your daily beauty routine
  • CRUELTY FREE FORMULA: Gluten free and Non-GMO, made with simple and effective ingredients
  • COERA PRODUCTS: Lab Tested, Trusted Ingredients, Superior Quality, 100% Guaranteed!
  • BARE BEAUTY: Free of Parabens, SLS, Mineral Oil, Fragrance, Artificial Color, and Cruelty-Free

What HA cannot tell you from the front label is whether the full formula will suit you. A better buying order is:

  1. Start with the formula you can use consistently. If you react to fragrance, choose a formula labeled fragrance-free and still patch-test it. “Natural” does not mean non-allergenic.
  2. Match texture to your routine. A thin water serum is easy to layer; a gel-cream or milky serum may feel more cushioning and may be enough for some oily skin in humid weather, but dry skin often still needs a cream afterward.
  3. Look at supportive ingredients only if you want them. Ceramides, glycerin and panthenol are sensible additions for a hydration-focused routine. Peptides, ectoin, botanical extracts and fragrance can change the experience, but they do not make one serum universally better.
  4. Treat “multiple molecular weights” as a formulation detail, not a proven winner. It may be a reason to try a product you otherwise like; it is not a reason to expect filler-like results.
  5. Compare the exact size and formula, not the bottle alone. Check the price per mL, the current ingredient list, return policy and authorized seller. Formulas, sizes, stock and prices change. The Ordinary explicitly notes that ingredient lists can vary by purchase date and region.

For acne-prone skin, “oil-free,” “non-comedogenic” and “won’t clog pores” are useful package signals, but not guarantees for every person. The AAD says those descriptions mean a product is unlikely to cause acne. Introduce only one new product at a time so you can identify the cause if your skin does not agree with it.

The 12 serums, with the right use case for each

1. SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier Multi-Glycan — premium, ingredient-forward pick

This is for the shopper who wants a premium HA serum with named concentrations rather than a bare-bones formula. SkinCeuticals lists 1.3% hyaluronic acid, 12% Proxylane and a post-biotic ferment, and describes the formula as fragrance-free. Those are manufacturer-provided characteristics, not evidence that it will outperform every HA serum for every user. Consider it if the formula and finish appeal to you and its price fits your budget; skip it if a simple HA-plus-moisturizer routine already works for you.

2. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides) — budget multi-HA pick

The Ordinary’s current formula combines five types of HA with ceramides and pro-vitamin B5. It is a practical choice for someone who wants a lightweight, water-based hydration serum without paying for a luxury presentation. The brand recommends patch testing, and its product page notes that the ingredient list may differ by region and date, so use the ingredients printed on the box you are buying as the final check. See the brand’s current product page and formula notice.

3. CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum — normal-to-dry, barrier-support angle

CeraVe pairs HA with vitamin B5 and three ceramides in a gel-cream serum. The brand labels it fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, and positions it for normal-to-dry skin. That makes it a strong starting point if you prefer one hydration layer with familiar moisturizing ingredients rather than a very watery serum. CeraVe’s consumer-test and hydration statements are brand data, not independent head-to-head proof. Check the current CeraVe product page for the latest ingredients and directions.

Rank #2
Hyaluronic Acid Serum 16 fl oz And 2 fl oz, Made From Pure Anti Aging/Wrinkle, Ultra Hydrating Moisturizer That Reduces Dry Skin Manufactured In USA
  • Reduce appearance of Fine Lines & Wrinkles with our Hyaluronic Acid Serum
  • Includes 16 fl oz and 2 fl oz bottle, all bottles are made of plastic
  • Only apply a few small drops to face and use a swirling motion, do not over apply product. Product is effective in small amount, so over application does not increase results.
  • Product DOES NOT require refrigeration and expiration date is clearly marked on the larger bottle.

4. Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum — minimalist water-based pick

Good Molecules is the uncomplicated option: the brand says it uses two molecular sizes of HA in a fragrance-free, water-based serum. It may suit someone building a short routine, especially if they already have a moisturizer they like. The brand directs morning-and-night use before oils, creams and moisturizers.

5. Vichy Minéral 89 Hydrating and Plumping Daily Booster — lightweight booster

Vichy’s booster-style formula combines HA, polyglutamic acid and Vichy volcanic water. The brand describes it as fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin. It is worth considering if you want a very light layer beneath a separate moisturizer; suitability still depends on your individual skin and the complete formula.

6. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum — accessible fragrance-free option

Neutrogena lists HA, panthenol and glycerin, three familiar moisture-supporting ingredients, and labels this serum fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. Its directions call for morning-and-evening use before moisturizer. That straightforward sequence makes it a convenient option for a basic routine, particularly if you want an HA serum from a widely available line.

7. Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum — luxury, sensorial option

Choose this for the experience and texture, not because a luxury label makes it medically superior. It is positioned as a hydration serum and is fragranced. If fragrance has caused stinging, redness or breakouts for you in the past, a fragrance-free alternative is the more cautious first purchase.

8. Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum — K-beauty-oriented pick

This candidate combines PDRN, HA and collagen in its product positioning. It may appeal to shoppers who enjoy K-beauty textures and ingredient concepts, but confirm the current package or official listing before purchase: ingredient lists and regional versions can change. PDRN and collagen on a label should not be read as a promise to repair disease-damaged skin or replace professional treatment.

Rank #3
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides), Multi-Depth Hydration Serum for Plumper, Smoother Skin, 1 Fl Oz
  • INSTANT HYDRATION: Provides immediate, long-lasting hydration for smoother, plumper, and healthier-looking skin.
  • SUPPORTS SKIN BARRIER: Ceramides lock in moisture and support the skin’s protective barrier.
  • REDUCES FINE LINES: Minimizes the appearance of fine dry lines and wrinkles while promoting elasticity and skin smoothness.
  • PRO-VITAMIN B5: Enhances the skin's moisture retention and supports the formation of essential barrier components like ceramides.
  • 5 TYPES OF HYALURONIC ACID: Delivers hydration to multiple layers of the skin, improving moisture retention and skin suppleness.

9. Paula’s Choice 7% Ectoin + Hyaluronic Acid Milky Hydrating Serum — best for a milky feel

A milky serum can be the sweet spot if a traditional watery serum feels too fleeting but you do not want a full cream. This one is positioned around 7% ectoin, HA and glycogen. Verify the current official formula before buying, especially if you avoid specific preservatives, plant extracts or other ingredients beyond the headline actives.

10. ALASTIN HA IMMERSE Serum — peptide-containing premium option

ALASTIN identifies Octapeptide-45, silver mushroom extract and Hexapeptide-11 alongside its hydration-focused formula, and calls the serum non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic. Those are brand characterizations. It may suit a shopper deliberately seeking a premium, more complex formula; it is not necessary for a functional HA routine.

11. La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum — sensitive-skin-label option

The U.S. listing describes this serum as allergy tested and offers 30 mL and 50 mL sizes. “Allergy tested” is a useful formulation signal, not a guarantee that no one will react. Patch-test first, particularly if you have rosacea, eczema, contact allergies or a history of reactions to skin-care products.

12. Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum — multi-weight HA and fruit-derived ingredients

Glow Recipe’s retailer positioning highlights five molecular weights of HA and plum-derived ingredients. It is a reasonable fit for someone who enjoys a more expressive, fruit-forward formula and wants multi-weight HA, but product or retailer language about plumping should be understood as cosmetic hydration positioning—not medical evidence or a filler alternative.

How to use an HA serum so it earns its place in your routine

  1. Cleanse gently. Avoid over-cleansing or adding several new actives at once.
  2. Apply the serum to slightly damp—not dripping—skin. Use the amount directed on the package and avoid the eye area if the product says to do so.
  3. Follow with moisturizer. This is the step that helps reduce water loss. Do not assume an HA serum replaces it, especially in dry air, air-conditioned rooms or if your skin is dry.
  4. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen is a separate, daily need; an HA serum does not supply UV protection.

This order is consistent with AAD advice to moisturize when skin is damp, helping trap water at the skin’s surface. The AAD also recommends daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as part of skin care. See its guidance on relieving dry skin and budget-friendly skin care.

Safety and troubleshooting

Topical HA products are generally considered low-risk, but no cosmetic formula is universally non-irritating. The problem may be fragrance, a preservative, an extract or another ingredient rather than HA itself.

  • Patch-test a new formula. Apply a small amount to a discreet area as directed by the product, then watch for irritation before using it on your face.
  • Stop using it if you develop burning, persistent stinging, rash, swelling or worsening breakouts. Do not keep layering a product that is clearly causing a reaction.
  • Keep a calm routine while troubleshooting. Return to products you know you tolerate and add one product at a time.
  • Seek clinical advice when appropriate. Persistent dryness, eczema, rosacea, acne, facial swelling or a significant rash may need a board-certified dermatologist’s assessment rather than another over-the-counter serum.

What this guide does—and does not—mean by “best”

These 12 are differentiated candidates, not a clinical ranking. “Best budget,” “best lightweight,” or “best luxury” describes a shopping use case, not a finding that one product treats skin better than another. A $10 serum followed by a moisturizer you reliably use can be a smarter purchase than an expensive serum that stays in a drawer.

Before checking out, verify the exact variation, ingredient list, size, price, stock status, fragrance claim and seller. Buy from the brand, an authorized retailer or a seller you can verify. If an Amazon listing has an unclear seller, a mismatched product photo, a questionable variation or an ingredient list that does not match the current brand page, choose a verified retailer instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need moisturizer after a hyaluronic acid serum?

No. An HA serum is a hydration step. Dermatology guidance emphasizes applying moisturizer to damp skin to help trap water, and dry skin often benefits from a cream or ointment afterward. Some oily skin may prefer a lighter moisturizer, but the serum is not automatically a substitute.

Can I use hyaluronic acid twice a day?

Often, yes. HA is commonly used in both morning and evening routines. Apply it after cleansing to slightly damp skin, follow with moisturizer, and use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher in the morning. Follow the specific package directions if they differ.

Are multiple molecular weights of HA automatically better?

Not necessarily. Multiple molecular weights describe a formulation approach; they do not establish that a serum will outperform every simpler formula or produce filler-like results. Choose based on the full formula, feel, tolerance and cost.

Can a topical HA serum replace injectable filler?

No. Injectable fillers are medical procedures administered by qualified clinicians and are not interchangeable with an over-the-counter topical serum. A serum can support a hydrated, temporarily plumper-looking finish; it does not recreate filler results.

What should acne-prone skin look for in an HA serum?

Look for package language such as oil-free, non-comedogenic or “won’t clog pores,” which the AAD says means a product is unlikely to cause acne. It is not a guarantee, so patch-test and introduce one product at a time.

The Bottom Line

Choose an HA serum for its complete formula, texture and price—not an implied promise of filler-like results. Apply it to slightly damp skin, seal it in with moisturizer and use sunscreen in the morning.
