No reliable, verified figure for Angela Merkel’s personal net worth is established by the available public records. A website claims €5 million for 2024, but its own listed asset estimates add up to €11 million and it gives no verifiable method for either total. The €5 million figure should therefore be treated as an unverified estimate, not a fact.
Is Angela Merkel’s net worth publicly known?
No complete, reliable public accounting of Merkel’s assets and liabilities establishes her net worth. Records document parts of her public career and the rules governing compensation for German chancellors, but those are not a personal balance sheet. They do not establish the value of her assets, her debts, or a net-worth total.
Net worth means assets minus liabilities. Knowing a public figure’s office, statutory pay formula, or public expenses does not provide both sides of that calculation.
Why the commonly repeated €5 million estimate is unreliable
A 2024 article by High Society presents Merkel’s wealth as an estimated €5 million. The same page lists €2 million in cash, €6 million in property, €2 million in securities, €500,000 in art, and €500,000 in other investments. Those categories total €11 million—not €5 million—and the article does not show a verifiable method for its headline estimate or asset breakdown. High Society’s estimate is thus not a substantiated net-worth figure.

The discrepancy is a basic reason to be cautious: a wealth estimate should explain what it counts, how the figures were obtained, whether liabilities are included, and how the components reconcile to the stated total. The page does not establish those points. Its asset values should not be repeated as facts.
What German public records do—and do not—show
Chancellor compensation is set by law, not disclosed as total wealth
Germany’s Federal Ministers Act provides a statutory formula for the Chancellor’s compensation: one and two-thirds of the B11 base salary, plus a specified local allowance and an official duty-expense allowance. The current statute describes that compensation structure. It does not, by itself, establish Merkel’s exact earnings over her full career or her present net worth. A salary formula cannot reveal accumulated assets, spending, taxes, or liabilities.
Parliamentary disclosures are not a complete financial statement
The Bundestag’s archived biography records Merkel’s parliamentary membership beginning in 1990, her ministerial roles, and her appointment as Chancellor on November 22, 2005. Its disclosure note says reported amounts for an activity are gross amounts, include specified benefits, exclude expenses and costs, and are not taxable income. The biography is not a complete financial disclosure or balance sheet.
Former-chancellor support is public expenditure, not personal income
The Bundestag reported combined staffing costs for the official equipment of former Chancellors Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz of €473,289 in the second half of 2024, €1,443,212 in 2025, and €408,174 in the first quarter of 2026. Those amounts are personnel costs for both former chancellors together; office, person-bound vehicle, and personal-protection costs are outside the totals. The report also says Merkel made nine trips from July 2024 through March 2026 that cost the federal budget €10,558.17. The Bundestag report describes public costs associated with former-chancellor duties, not Merkel’s personal income or wealth.

Does Merkel’s memoir establish additional income?
St. Martin’s Press announced that Merkel’s memoir, FREEDOM, co-written with longtime political adviser Beate Baumann, was published on November 26, 2024. The publisher lists hardcover, ebook, digital audio, and CD formats. The publisher’s announcement confirms the book’s release, but does not disclose sales, contract terms, or Merkel’s royalties. The book’s publication is not evidence for any particular net-worth estimate.

Before relying on a reported net-worth number, check whether the source provides:
- A transparent method and credible sourcing for each major asset and liability.
- A clear date and scope for the estimate, including whether it covers jointly owned property or other interests.
- A distinction between gross income, public spending, and personal wealth.
- Asset categories that reconcile with the reported total.
The available €5 million claim does not pass the reconciliation check: its own listed categories sum to €11 million. No verified alternative total is established by the public records discussed here.
