Which Amtrak route exceeded expectations?
It is Mardi Gras Service, a state-supported route connecting New Orleans, Louisiana, with Mobile, Alabama, through Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula in Mississippi. It launched on August 18, 2025, and runs twice daily in each direction, according to Amtrak and Mississippi’s FY2025 state fact sheet. How many people have ridden Mardi Gras Service?
Amtrak has published several counts covering different periods. They should not be treated as interchangeable: an FY2025 total is not a full first-year count, and a projected milestone is not a verified final tally.

Amtrak’s fact sheet calculates route ridership by adding boardings and alightings, then dividing by two. That accounting method is worth keeping in mind when comparing the route’s figure with station-level totals, which use a different basis.

What does “exceeded expectations” mean here?
Amtrak Executive Vice President Jennifer Mitchell said in the August 18, 2026 release: “This route has exceeded every expectation for ridership and revenue.” That is Amtrak’s characterization of the service’s performance, not an independently defined benchmark. The release does not specify the original ridership or revenue forecast or provide the comparison needed to quantify how far actual results surpassed it.
In its December 2025 update, Amtrak Board Chairman Anthony “Tony” Coscia said the route was “well on-track to double the original estimate.” The passage does not state the estimate or the period it covered, so the quote signals the company’s optimism but does not establish a precise forecast comparison.

What record did the route break?
The official figures cited here do not name a route-level record, its category, or the routes and period against which Mardi Gras Service would be compared. They support a story of strong demand and ridership above Amtrak’s expectations; they do not substantiate the claim that this route broke a particular record.

How did Amtrak describe the service after 100 days?
In its December 4, 2025 update, Amtrak reported that 96% of surveyed customers were “extremely satisfied” and that more than 86% of customers were on time. “Newest” changes as Amtrak adds services and can depend on the geographic scope. Mardi Gras Service was new when it launched in August 2025; a 2026 account, for example, describes Borealis as Amtrak’s newest Midwest route. Naming Mardi Gras Service and its launch date is more precise than treating “newest” as a lasting label.
