The company called ridership and revenue higher than expected, but did not publish its original numerical forecast. Available reporting does not establish what the phrase “a rusty spring” refers to or show that a spring event measurably affected service.
What Amtrak reported at the one-year mark
The Mardi Gras Service began on August 18, 2025, restoring passenger rail service to the Gulf Coast corridor between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. Its first-anniversary release said the route would reach 150,000 customer trips during that week, including more than 100,000 passengers in 2026. Amtrak Executive Vice President Jennifer Mitchell said, “This route has exceeded every expectation for ridership and revenue.” The release did not give the numerical forecast against which that performance was measured. That missing baseline matters: the company’s statement supports the conclusion that it considers the route a success, but it does not let readers calculate how far actual ridership surpassed the original estimate.
How ridership changed over the first year
Early and anniversary figures provide two snapshots, not a like-for-like performance series. Axios reported in December 2025, citing Amtrak figures, that more than 46,000 riders had used the service after roughly 100 days, averaging about 420 passengers per day. At the one-year mark, Axios reported an average of 400 passengers per day and 150,000 passengers over the first year. The December report said the route was on track to double passenger estimates, based on Amtrak officials. That is the available comparison with an expectation; neither report supplies the original estimate as a number. The early 100-day total should not be compared directly with the full-year total as if they covered equal periods.
What the route offers and who supports it
Amtrak describes the service as twice daily between New Orleans and Mobile, traveling through Coastal Mississippi. Axios describes two daily round trips and Mississippi Gulf Coast stops. The service is locally sponsored: Amtrak identifies the Louisiana and Mississippi transportation departments and the City of Mobile as sponsors, with the Southern Rail Commission cooperating. What satisfaction and economic claims do—and do not—show
Amtrak said the trains rank near the top of its services in customer satisfaction and credited train, engine, onboard, and maintenance teams. Axios reported in December 2025 that the service had the highest satisfaction scores across Amtrak’s network. Neither source provides a numeric satisfaction score, so the claim cannot be independently quantified from those reports.
Regional tourism organizations and officials also described benefits associated with the service. New Orleans & Company CEO Walt Leger III said visitation from Mobile and parts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast had increased by nearly 20 percent since launch. What is known about the “rusty spring” claim
The available sources do not explain what “a rusty spring” means in this headline, identify a specific spring 2026 disruption, or document a resulting change in ridership, punctuality, or service quality. Axios also reported that seven people died in collisions with trains during the service’s first year, citing the Times-Picayune. That is a reported collision toll, not a seasonal performance measure or a passenger-satisfaction statistic. Axios’s anniversary report

What the first-year numbers mean for travelers
For someone considering the route, the first-year figures show that the service attracted substantial use and that Amtrak considers its performance encouraging. They do not establish on-time performance, the impact of any individual delay, or what a future timetable will deliver.
