A roomette costs less when its live fare is lower, but you use shared restrooms and showers. Neither is automatically the better value: compare the total fares for the same train, date, route, and traveler count, then decide whether the bedroom’s extra space and bathroom privacy justify the difference.
What do you get with a roomette versus a bedroom?
Amtrak says a bedroom offers twice the space of a roomette. Both standard accommodations are private rooms for up to two adults, and both convert from a daytime seating arrangement to upper and lower beds at night. The main practical distinction is the bathroom: roomette guests use shared facilities, while a bedroom has its own sink, restroom, and shower.
| Feature | Roomette | Bedroom |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Amtrak describes it as half the space of a bedroom. | Twice the space of a roomette, according to Amtrak. The official page lists dimensions of 7’1″–7’6″ long and 6’6″–6’8″ wide; dimensions may vary by accommodation or configuration. |
| Daytime seating | Two seats. | A sofa and a separate chair. |
| Sleeping setup | The seats convert to upper and lower beds. | The sofa and chair convert to upper and lower beds. |
| Bathroom | Shared restroom and shower facilities. | Private in-room sink, restroom, and shower. |
| Capacity | Up to two adults. | Up to two adults. A standard bedroom is not a four-person room; Amtrak offers separate family-room and bedroom-suite categories. |
| Private-room benefits | Complimentary meals, a First Class attendant, priority boarding, and complimentary lounge access at major stations. | Complimentary meals, a First Class attendant, priority boarding, and complimentary lounge access at major stations. |
Amtrak lists bedding, pillows, towels, and linens with roomettes. Since the core private-room benefits are shared, meals and lounge access do not by themselves make a bedroom worth its higher fare.
How to compare the fares fairly
Amtrak says private-room fares depend on when and where you travel and how many people are traveling. There is no fixed bedroom premium that applies to every trip, so a general percentage or dollar estimate can mislead. Check live prices for your exact itinerary instead.

#1 Best Overall
- Amtrak licensed product
- Amfleet cars have unique inside bearing trucks which replicate the prototype design
- All-wheel electrical pickup on all cars allows easy installation of optional interior lights
- Collector-friendly bookcase style packaging with extra space to hold the contents of 106-6285 4-Unit loco and car set as well
- Set the same trip details. Search the same route, departure date, train, and traveler count for each accommodation.
- Compare the total fares. Include taxes and fees consistently if they are shown. Record the date you checked, because fares and availability can change.
- Calculate the bedroom premium. Subtract the roomette total from the bedroom total. Divide that difference by the number of travelers to see the added cost per person.
- Weigh the premium against what changes. Decide how much the extra space and private bathroom matter for the length and circumstances of your trip. Do not assign extra value to benefits both room types include.
- Recheck before booking. Amtrak recommends booking early to secure the best fare, but the amount available can vary with inventory and timing.
For example, if two travelers see a bedroom total that is $240 above the roomette total, the bedroom adds $120 per traveler for that quoted trip. That calculation is a comparison method, not a prediction of Amtrak prices; your actual difference depends on the live quote.
When is the bedroom worth paying more?
Choose a bedroom when privacy and convenience matter most
- You strongly prefer an in-room toilet and shower rather than shared facilities.
- You expect to spend substantial time in the room and want more daytime space.
- The per-traveler fare difference fits your budget and is worth the added privacy to you.
Choose a roomette when the savings matter more than the extra space
- You are comfortable using shared restroom and shower facilities.
- The room is primarily a private place to sit and sleep, rather than a space where you expect to spend much of the trip awake.
- The bedroom premium for your travel date is better used elsewhere in your trip budget.
Both options accommodate up to two adults, so the decision is not simply about paying more to fit additional people into a standard room. If you need a different capacity, compare Amtrak’s separate family-room and bedroom-suite categories.

Check the train and room configuration before booking
Amtrak says Superliner cars have two levels of private rooms per car, while Viewliner cars have one. Accessible-bedroom bathroom layouts also differ by equipment: Amtrak’s guidance describes a private in-room restroom on Viewliners; the Superliner accessible-bedroom arrangement has an in-room sink and toilet, with access to shared shower facilities. If accessibility or the bathroom layout is decisive, confirm the exact train and accommodation details for your trip rather than assuming every bedroom has the same setup.
