Amo Houghton was estimated to be worth $475 million in Roll Call’s 2003 and 2004 reporting. The 2004 article attributed the estimate to Forbes and linked much of Houghton’s wealth to Corning stock and trust holdings. It was a historical estimate—not an audited balance sheet or a verified value for his estate.
What was Amo Houghton’s net worth?
The most commonly reported figure is $475 million. Roll Call reported that estimate in 2003 and attributed the 2004 figure to Forbes. The number describes estimates published during those years; it should not be treated as a confirmed accounting of Houghton’s assets or liabilities.
Roll Call’s 2003 account also distinguished the Forbes estimate from the minimum assets shown in Houghton’s congressional financial disclosures. Those disclosures were extensive, including transaction attachments involving Market Street Trust Co., and Roll Call described them as difficult to decipher. The reported estimate and a disclosed minimum asset figure were therefore not interchangeable measures. Roll Call’s 2003 coverage
What was behind the $475 million estimate?
Roll Call’s 2004 profile said much of Houghton’s wealth was tied to Corning stock and discussed holdings in the Elisabeth Houghton Trust. Houghton was a Corning heir and had served as the company’s chief executive, according to The Washington Post’s 2020 obituary. The published estimate was not a detailed, independently verified inventory of his property, investments, debts, or other financial interests.

Why do reported estimates differ?
The figures refer to different reporting years and should not be combined into one total. A 2009 Roll Call retrospective cited a Forbes-based estimate of $420 million in 1992 and said its own attributed number had varied substantially because sources used to estimate Houghton’s wealth differed. Roll Call’s 2009 retrospective
| Figure | Year and source | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| $420 million | 1992 estimate cited by Roll Call in 2009 | A Forbes-based estimate, as described retrospectively by Roll Call |
| $475 million | 2003 Roll Call coverage | Reported estimate of Houghton’s wealth |
| $475 million | 2004 Roll Call profile, attributed to Forbes | Historical estimate associated with Corning stock and trust holdings |
These are estimates reported at different times, not like-for-like audited valuations. A separate Corning proxy statement reported an enhanced taxable pension benefit of $150,000 a year under a 100% joint-and-survivor annuity option in 2003; that compensation disclosure is not a net-worth estimate. The available reporting does not establish Houghton’s final estate value. The $475 million figure was published in 2003–2004, well before his death. The Washington Post reported that Houghton died in 2020 at age 93; that historical estimate cannot be presented as his net worth at death or as the value of his estate.
