Founder Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye said that continuing in the market was no longer sustainable; her account cited operational, fundraising and cost pressures rather than one independently established cause.
What happened to Ami Colé?
Ami Colé was founded by Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye and launched in 2021 with makeup designed for melanin-rich skin. Its initial products included a Skin-Enhancing Tint, Lip Treatment Oil and Light-Catching Highlighter. The brand was inspired by Senegal, produced in Harlem, and sold through Sephora in the United States and Canada, according to BeautyMatter and ELLE.
In the closure announcement quoted by BeautyMatter, N’Diaye-Mbaye wrote: “After nearly four years in business, @byamicole will close this September. This decision was so hard for me. But after looking at every option, it became clear that continuing in this current market wasn’t sustainable.” BeautyMatter published its account on July 17, 2025; ELLE followed on July 22.
What does “after raising over $3 million” mean?
ELLE reported in 2025 that Ami Colé had raised over $3 million and had expanded to more than 600 Sephora stores after entering the retailer in 2022. Those are ELLE’s reported figures, not audited totals independently verified here. A large retail footprint and outside investment do not, by themselves, establish that a company has enough ongoing cash to fund production, marketing and operations or to withstand changes in demand.

Why did Ami Colé close?
The founder described a combination of business pressures. Her comments offer her account of the decision, not a separately verified financial breakdown assigning the closure to a single factor.
Demand and inventory decisions
BeautyMatter reported that the company struggled to predict stock needs as products sold out during viral demand peaks and then risked being overstocked. N’Diaye-Mbaye said: “We made operational decisions that felt necessary at the time—like scaling up production to meet potential demand—without truly knowing how the market would respond.” This illustrates a cash-flow challenge for a product business: producing too little can mean missed sales, while producing too much ties money up in inventory that may not sell quickly.

A fundraising round that did not close
ESSENCE reported the founder’s account that an attempted funding round intended to support a 2025 reset did not close, despite support from existing investors. Tariffs and marketing costs
ELLE quoted N’Diaye-Mbaye describing tariffs and marketing expenses as pressures on small brands. She said: “We’ve got this president, climbing tariffs, and marketing costs that are brutal for small brands like mine. And while my story isn’t unique, it still hurts to watch an industry preach inclusivity while remaining so unforgiving,” Her remarks identify costs she said were affecting Ami Colé; they do not quantify their effect on the company’s finances.

What Ami Colé sold—and what is known about products now
ELLE listed the Skin-Enhancing Tint, Skin-Enhancing Stick, Lip Treatment Oil, Lash-Amplifying Mascara, Cream Multistick, Soft Shape Lip Liner, Skin Melt Loose Powder and Complexion Brush among its product favorites. ELLE linked the Complexion Brush to Amazon, but that does not establish that it is currently in stock, who sells it, or what it costs. Check the live listing and seller details before relying on availability; a product listing does not mean proceeds support Ami Colé.

No single product is established as an exact Ami Colé substitute. For complexion makeup, compare the actual shade range and undertones, formula, finish, price and current availability. A product described as suitable for deeper skin tones may still be a poor match if its undertone or finish differs from what you need.
