- Estimated costs are not a city’s actual losses. The 2026 analysis applies national average cost estimates to offenses; those averages may not reflect costs in a particular city. MoneyGeek advises using the rankings to compare cities, not to calculate exact dollar losses.
- The measure is narrower than overall safety. A crime-cost estimate does not by itself account for every factor a resident or visitor might consider when assessing safety.
Why the 2026 ranking cannot fill in the missing 2024 list
The accessible 2026 analysis uses FBI data for crimes reported in 2024, but it is a 2026 report with its own cost estimates and methodology. The year of the crime data is not the edition year of the ranking.
