American Airlines CEO Robert Isom called the removal of eight Black men from a January 2024 flight a “breakdown of our procedures.” Three passengers later sued, alleging racial discrimination. The airline settled their lawsuit in December 2024; the financial terms were not disclosed in the cited report.
What happened on the American Airlines flight
On January 5, 2024, eight Black men were removed from an American Airlines flight in Phoenix before its scheduled departure to New York. The three men who later sued said they did not know one another and were seated in different parts of the aircraft. They alleged that an employee told them the removal followed a flight attendant’s complaint about an unidentified passenger’s body odor. These details come from the passengers’ complaint and contemporaneous reporting, not a court finding. Read the complaint and the Associated Press report from May 29, 2024.
The three plaintiffs said they were among the eight men removed and that all eight were Black. The men were allowed back onto the plane after a delay of about an hour, according to the complaint and AP’s June 20 report. AP’s June 20, 2024 report covers the passengers’ account.
What American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said
In a message to employees dated June 18, 2024, Isom wrote: “I am incredibly disappointed by what happened on that flight and the breakdown of our procedures.” He called the incident unacceptable. His statement acknowledged a procedural failure; it did not resolve the passengers’ discrimination allegations.

Isom also said the airline would form an advisory group focused on Black customers, encourage reporting of discrimination allegations, and improve diversity training with more emphasis on real-world situations. The plaintiffs’ attorneys said the flight attendants involved had been fired. That personnel detail was attributed to the attorneys, not established through a disclosed settlement agreement. AP reported on the settlement on December 19, 2024.
