Is American’s boarding technology a new bag rule?
No. The boarding technology described by the Associated Press rejects a boarding pass scanned before the passenger’s assigned group is called and alerts the gate agent. The passenger is asked to wait until their group boards. It controls when a passenger boards; it does not change the published dimensions for carry-on bags.
“Gate lice” is a colloquial term used in coverage, not an official American policy name. AP reported in November 2024 that the technology was operating at more than 100 U.S. airports at that time, after tests at Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. AP also noted a possible complication: companions on separate reservations with different boarding groups may need a gate agent to override the system so they can board together. The technology is therefore an order-enforcement measure, not a blanket guarantee that every group can board together without assistance.

What did American change about boarding?
In a 2025 announcement, American said that, starting May 1, it would update boarding groups and add five minutes of boarding time on domestic mainline flights. The airline said the goal was a better-paced boarding process and improved management of overhead-bin space. It identified fewer gate-checked carry-ons, more time to find seats and receive flight-attendant support, and a more personalized premium-cabin experience as expected customer benefits. The same announcement listed preboarding for ConciergeKey, First/Business and families traveling with children age two and under, followed by numbered groups; Basic Economy was listed in Group 9. These are details from the dated announcement, not a guarantee of today’s group assignments. Check the group printed on your boarding pass and American’s current guidance for your flight.

What are American’s published carry-on size limits?
American’s baggage policy permits one personal item and one carry-on when they meet its requirements. The personal item must fit beneath the seat in front of you. The airline lists these maximum dimensions:

Can a correctly sized carry-on still be checked at the gate?
Yes. Meeting the size limit does not guarantee that a bag will stay in the cabin. American’s conditions of carriage say all bags must be stowed before takeoff and reserve the airline’s right to determine whether a carry-on is suitable and whether overhead-bin space is available. Regional American Eagle flights have a separate practical constraint: American says overhead space is limited, so a carry-on larger than personal-item dimensions must be valet-checked before boarding, tagged at no charge and returned at the jetbridge. The airline says Embraer ERJ-175 aircraft allow carry-on bags and do not offer valet service. Check the aircraft and itinerary-specific instructions rather than assuming every regional flight handles bags the same way.

Is there evidence flight attendants quietly dislike the changes for safety reasons?
The available sources do not substantiate that claim. American’s announcement presents the changes as an operational effort to improve boarding pace and overhead-bin management. AP’s report includes commentary about orderliness, passenger experience and employee preparation, but it does not establish a general flight-attendant position or a safety-based objection. Without attributable testimony or union documentation, it would be inaccurate to say flight attendants broadly dislike the policy or oppose it for crucial safety reasons.
There is a practical safety requirement that applies regardless: American says baggage must be stowed before takeoff. That rule does not, by itself, show that flight attendants oppose the boarding technology or that the technology was introduced for safety reasons.

What travelers should do
- Board when your assigned group is called; if a scanner rejects your pass, follow the gate agent’s direction.
- If you are traveling with someone on a separate reservation or in a different group, ask the gate agent whether you can board together.
- Measure your personal item and carry-on, including the carry-on’s handles and wheels, and confirm the bag fits the applicable sizer.
- Leave room in your plans for a gate check: overhead capacity and aircraft restrictions can override the usual expectation that a compliant bag will travel in the cabin.
- On an American Eagle flight, check the aircraft-specific instructions for valet service and overhead space.
