Dallas/Fort Worth was American Airlines’ busiest hub by American-carrier passenger volume in calendar year 2025, with 27,468,330 passengers. Charlotte ranked second, followed by Miami, Chicago O’Hare and Philadelphia. These are American-attributed passenger counts—not total traffic at each airport.
American Airlines’ five leading hubs by passengers
The ranking below uses calendar-year 2025 passenger figures attributed to American’s operating carrier code in DWU Consulting airport dashboards based on BTS T-100 Segment data. The dashboards count passengers departing on passenger-configured aircraft; they exclude combi and mixed-configuration services.
| Rank | Hub | American-carrier passengers, CY 2025 | American share of passenger-configured departing passengers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) | 27,468,330 | 66.46% |
| 2 | Charlotte (CLT) | 17,867,662 | 68.96% |
| 3 | Miami (MIA) | 15,022,851 | 57.83% |
| 4 | Chicago O’Hare (ORD) | 8,443,777 | not stated for this comparison in the cited dashboard summary |
| 5 | Philadelphia (PHL) | 7,530,522 | 50.85% |

What the ranking measures—and what it does not
“Passenger numbers” can refer to different things. This ranking compares passengers attributed to American at each airport, using the same carrier and calendar-year basis. It is not a ranking of total airport traffic: airport-wide totals include passengers flying on every airline and are much larger.

The dashboards’ airport totals count passengers departing on passenger-configured aircraft, using T-100 aircraft configurations 1 and 2. Combi and mixed-configuration services are excluded, so these totals may be slightly below figures calculated with all configurations. The reported carrier shares use that passenger-configured departing-passenger basis.
Why the five busiest hubs are not American’s whole network
American’s 2024 Form 10-K lists nine hub markets: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. American’s newsroom gives the same nine-hub account, grouping JFK and LaGuardia under New York. The five airports above are therefore the leaders by the stated passenger measure, not a complete list of the airline’s hubs.

American describes DFW as its largest hub. Its fact sheet, marked “AS OF MAY 2024,” says the airline carried more than 69 million passengers through DFW in 2024 and accounted for 82% of the airport’s annual commercial passenger traffic. That historical company figure is a different, earlier measure and should not be confused with DFW’s 27,468,330 American-carrier passengers in the CY 2025 dashboard ranking.
Hub status does not mean an airline leads the airport
An airline can operate a hub at an airport without being that airport’s largest carrier. In the cited CY 2025 ORD data, United had the largest operating-carrier share; American still ranked among the airport’s carriers and Chicago is one of its listed hub markets.

Airport-wide comparisons illustrate why the scope matters. A Miami-Dade Aviation Department 2025 publication reported total 2024 airport passengers of 87.8 million at DFW, 80.0 million at ORD, 58.8 million at CLT and 55.9 million at MIA. Those figures cover all carriers and are not comparable to the American-only CY 2025 counts in the table.

Scheduled seats measure capacity offered, not passengers who actually flew. Philadelphia airport bond materials compare American’s scheduled departing seats between FY 2019 and FY 2025 at selected hubs:
| Airport | FY 2019 scheduled departing seats | FY 2025 scheduled departing seats | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| DFW | 35,419,347 | 42,080,963 | +18.8% |
| CLT | 26,032,640 | 30,354,145 | +16.6% |
| MIA | 17,175,479 | 19,625,801 | +14.3% |
These are scheduled-seat figures for the fiscal years shown, not realized passenger traffic. Similarly, FAA passenger-boardings statistics classify airports for federal purposes; they do not rank an airline’s hub volume. The FAA says calendar-year 2025 boarding data determines FY 2027 airport category and funding, and its passenger-boarding page was updated September 24, 2026: FAA passenger boarding statistics.
