Re:

AMD Cut About 4% of Its Workforce in 2024 as It Shifted Resources Toward AI

AMD’s 4% workforce reduction was announced in November 2024, not 2026. Here’s the estimated job count, strategic rationale, restructuring cost and what remains unknown.

AMD did announce a workforce reduction of approximately 4%—but the announcement was made on November 13, 2024, not in 2026. Based on AMD’s roughly 26,000 employees at the time, contemporary reporting estimated the reduction at about 1,000 jobs. AMD did not confirm an exact final headcount or identify every affected department and location.

AMD later reported the action as its 2024 Restructuring Plan. It was implemented in the fourth quarter of 2024 and substantially completed in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.

What AMD announced

AMD said it would reduce its global workforce by approximately 4% in a targeted effort to align resources with its “largest growth opportunities.” The company also said it intended to treat affected employees respectfully and assist them through the transition, according to CRN’s report of the company statement.

The announcement did not include a precise number of terminated employees, a complete list of offices, or a division-by-division breakdown. Therefore, “about 1,000 employees” is an estimate—not a final number publicly confirmed by AMD.

How many jobs did 4% represent?

AMD had approximately 26,000 employees around the time of the announcement. The basic calculation is:

26,000 employees × 4% = approximately 1,040 employees

That supports contemporary estimates of roughly 1,000 affected workers, including the estimate reported by Reuters. It does not establish the exact number of people whose employment ended, because AMD disclosed the percentage rather than a precise headcount.

Why did AMD cut staff while investing in AI?

AMD’s stated reason was broader than simply “layoffs to focus on AI”: it said it was aligning resources with its largest growth opportunities. Artificial-intelligence accelerators and data-center chips were the central strategic context.

AMD was trying to expand its Instinct accelerator business and compete with Nvidia in a rapidly growing market. Reuters reported that AMD had raised its 2024 AI-chip sales forecast to approximately $5 billion. At the same time, AMD’s businesses were performing unevenly in the quarter immediately before the announcement:

  • Data-center revenue more than doubled year over year.
  • Personal-computer revenue increased 29%.
  • Gaming revenue declined approximately 69% year over year.

This combination helps explain how a company can reduce total headcount while expanding investment in a high-growth area. AMD could redirect money and personnel toward data-center and AI opportunities while managing slower or weaker parts of the business. That does not mean every affected employee worked in gaming or another declining unit, and AMD did not publish enough detail to make that claim.

What AMD disclosed about the restructuring later

AMD’s subsequent filings provide a clearer accounting record than the original announcement. The company identified the action as the 2024 Restructuring Plan and reported:

Item Amount or timing
Workforce reduction Approximately 4% globally
Implementation Fourth quarter of 2024
Substantial completion First quarter of fiscal 2025
Cumulative restructuring charges $186 million
Employee severance and benefits $113 million
Asset impairment $73 million
Severance payments made during 2025 $79 million

The $186 million figure was a restructuring charge, not an amount AMD necessarily saved each year. It included severance, benefits and asset impairments. The filing also does not establish that every affected employee received the same severance package; individual terms can vary by country, contract and eligibility.

Was this a new AMD layoff in 2026?

Not according to the filings identified here. The approximately 4% reduction belongs to AMD’s November 2024 announcement and the company’s 2024 Restructuring Plan. AMD’s later filing says the related actions were substantially completed in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.

That distinction matters for anyone researching a former employer, evaluating technology-sector job risk or interpreting an investment story. The accurate description is: AMD reduced its global workforce by approximately 4% in late 2024. It would be misleading to present the event as AMD newly cutting 4% of its workforce in 2026 without evidence of a separate announcement.

What happened to AMD after the cuts?

AMD reported approximately 31,000 employees as of December 27, 2025, according to its 2025 annual report. That later number should not be used to recalculate the 2024 reduction. It reflects AMD’s workforce at a different date and may include subsequent hiring, business changes and acquisition-related additions.

One relevant change was AMD’s completion of its acquisition of ZT Systems on March 31, 2025, as disclosed in its first-quarter 2025 filing.

AMD also reported record full-year 2025 revenue of $34.6 billion, including $16.6 billion in data-center revenue, up from $12.6 billion in 2024. Those results show that the 2024 restructuring did not occur amid an across-the-board collapse in demand. They do not prove that the layoffs caused AMD’s later growth, improved profitability or made the company more competitive.

What remains unknown

  • The exact number of employees whose jobs were eliminated.
  • Which countries, facilities, teams or job categories were most affected.
  • The severance terms available to individual employees.
  • How many eliminated roles, if any, were replaced by AI-related hiring.

For affected workers, the corporate totals also say little about personal financial impact. Eligibility for severance, continuation of benefits, equity treatment, notice periods and unemployment support may differ by employment agreement and jurisdiction. Employees should rely on their individual separation documents and applicable local labor rules rather than infer personal benefits from AMD’s aggregate $113 million severance-and-benefits charge.

What this means for technology workers and job seekers

The AMD case illustrates an important labor-market distinction: strong company or business-segment growth does not guarantee stable employment in every function. Semiconductor and AI companies may expand strategic product lines while reducing roles elsewhere, consolidating overlapping work or changing the mix of skills they need.

Workers assessing similar risk should separate three questions:

  1. Is the company growing? AMD’s later revenue results indicate substantial growth.
  2. Which businesses are growing? Data-center and AI-related opportunities were more central to AMD’s strategy than weaker areas such as gaming.
  3. Does my role match the company’s priorities? Companywide results cannot answer that question for an individual employee.

For people searching after a technology-sector layoff, resources such as LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed, Wellfound and Levels.fyi Jobs can provide different combinations of job listings, networking and compensation information. Training platforms such as Coursera, Google Cloud Training and AWS Training and Certification may be relevant for some software, infrastructure or data roles, but a certificate is not a guarantee of employment and is not a substitute for specialized chip-design experience.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: AMD’s approximately 4% workforce reduction was real, but it was announced on November 13, 2024. AMD later recorded it as the 2024 Restructuring Plan, with $186 million in cumulative charges and substantial completion in fiscal 2025. The event should not be described as a new 2026 layoff without separate evidence.
