The outlet described it as the first recorded year-over-year decline in Washington since Amazon was founded. That is a historical comparison—not evidence that the workforce kept shrinking afterward.
What the 2024 numbers show
GeekWire reported the change on April 8, 2024. Its calculation compared Amazon’s reported Washington employment in early 2023 with the figure for early 2024: 3,000 fewer workers, leaving a total of 87,000. The count covered corporate and warehouse workers but excluded drivers employed by third-party delivery companies. GeekWire’s 2024 report drew on periodic state-by-state figures from Amazon; Amazon’s company page did not provide the historical series, so GeekWire had compiled earlier updates.
“First time” refers to the first recorded year-over-year decline in Washington reported in that account. It does not mean Amazon’s state workforce has fallen every year since, or that the figure measures every person who delivers Amazon packages.
Later figures are not a directly comparable time series
Amazon’s Washington investment page reported more than 95,000 full- and part-time employees in the state in 2025. That later company-reported figure does not, on its own, establish how employment changed from the 87,000 figure: the cited pages do not reconcile their dates and definitions into a consistent series. In August 2026, GeekWire reported that Amazon had more than 80,000 total Washington workers. The report does not reconcile that figure with the company’s 2025 figure, so the two should not be used to calculate a rise or fall. GeekWire’s August 2026 report

Why the Washington workforce declined is not established
The 2024 report said Washington fell to third among U.S. states for Amazon employment, behind California and Texas. It also described Seattle employment falling while Bellevue employment rose. Those changes provide geographic context, but do not establish what caused the statewide net decrease. The cited reporting does not identify a single policy, office move, layoff, or business decision as its cause.

Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser told GeekWire in 2026: “Teams across the company regularly review their structures to ensure they’re best set up to deliver on their goals.” That was a general comment about team reviews in a report on later planned cuts; it was not an explanation for the 2023–24 statewide decrease.
Seattle and Bellevue counts describe cities, not the state
KUOW reported in February 2026 that Amazon had about 49,000 employees in Seattle, down from 60,000 in 2020, and about 15,000 in Bellevue. Its account described some key teams, including worldwide operations, shifting to Bellevue. These city-level counts help explain the changing distribution of Amazon’s regional workforce, but they cannot substitute for a statewide total or explain the earlier statewide decline. What later layoff notices do—and do not—tell you
GeekWire’s August 2026 report identified a Washington WARN notice for 121 planned cuts, with effective dates from October 1 through October 27, 2026. The reported roles were in corporate teams in Bellevue and Seattle and fulfillment in Sumner. A WARN notice reports planned separations; it is not proof that every listed separation occurred, nor a measure of Amazon’s total Washington employment.
