Amazon did launch the low-price storefront described in June 2024 reports—but under the name Amazon Haul. Amazon introduced Haul in the United States on November 13, 2024, offering mostly low-cost, often unbranded products priced at $20 or less. The trade-off is straightforward: lower prices and a broader bargain selection in exchange for slower delivery, more variable quality, and different return expectations than regular Amazon shopping.
What Amazon originally planned
In June 2024, The Information reported that Amazon was preparing a separate discount-shopping section for inexpensive fashion, household goods, lifestyle products, and everyday necessities.

The proposed model differed from simply adding more cheap third-party listings to Amazon’s existing marketplace. Chinese sellers were reportedly being offered a way to ship orders directly from China to overseas customers, rather than first sending large quantities of inventory to Amazon’s U.S. fulfillment centers.

That approach would allow merchants to test demand before committing to large inventory runs. The reported timetable called for seller sign-ups during summer 2024, inventory acceptance in fall 2024, and delivery in roughly nine to 11 days.

Amazon did not confirm all of those details. Its public response was that it was exploring ways to offer customers more selection, lower prices, and convenience. Reuters separately reported the plan and noted uncertainty about how shipments would be handled under U.S. customs rules.
The plan became Amazon Haul
Amazon launched the concept as Amazon Haul on November 13, 2024. The initial U.S. version was a beta experience in the Amazon Shopping app, with its own browsing, search, cart, and checkout. Amazon later made Haul available on both mobile and desktop in the United States.
Haul is an online shopping experience, not a physical discount-store chain. Its assortment includes categories such as fashion, home, lifestyle, electronics, beauty, toys, health and household, and accessories. Amazon says every item is priced at $20 or less, with most products below $10.

The reported China-direct strategy became part of the service’s broader supply-chain approach. However, shoppers should not assume that every Haul listing follows precisely the same fulfillment route or ships directly from China. The listing’s delivery estimate and checkout details are the most relevant information for a particular order.
How much does Amazon Haul cost?
As Amazon described the service at launch:
- Every item was priced at $20 or less.
- Most items were priced below $10.
- Some products started at about $1.
- Delivery was free on orders of $25 or more.
- Orders below $25 incurred a $3.99 delivery fee.
- Orders of $50 or more received 5% off, while orders of $75 or more received 10% off.
Amazon’s launch examples included a $1.79 iPhone 16 case, a $2.99 jewelry set, a $2.99 trimmer set, and $4.99 kitchen tongs. Those were examples from November 2024, not guaranteed current prices. Listings, promotions, fees, and availability can change.

Consider the effective price rather than only the product price:
Effective price = item price + delivery fee + possible tax or import cost − applicable order discount

For example, a $3 item ordered by itself with a $3.99 delivery charge does not effectively cost $3. Combining eligible items to reach the free-delivery threshold can materially change the calculation. Taxes and any applicable import charges must be checked at checkout.
Why shipping from China matters
Amazon already hosted many Chinese third-party sellers. The significant change was the proposed combination of a dedicated ultra-low-price storefront, direct or China-linked fulfillment, and small-batch inventory testing.
Sending products directly to customers can reduce the need for sellers to store large amounts of inventory in U.S. fulfillment centers. It can also help merchants experiment with products in smaller quantities. The downside is that customers generally wait longer and may have less predictable delivery, packaging, product information, or after-sale support.

The original reports also raised the U.S. de minimis customs provision, which at the time generally allowed qualifying individual packages valued below $800 to enter with simplified customs treatment. Reuters said it was unclear whether the proposed Amazon shipments would use that provision. Customs and tariff policy can change quickly, so older reporting should not be treated as a guarantee of current duty-free treatment or eligibility.

Haul purchases are covered by Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee. Amazon said eligible Haul purchases over $3 could be returned free within 15 days of delivery in the U.S., with drop-off options including Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, UPS, Kohl’s, and Staples.
That protection does not mean Amazon manufactured or independently tested every product. Haul is part of Amazon’s marketplace ecosystem, so brand authenticity, materials, durability, warranty support, and seller responsiveness can vary by listing.
Amazon Haul versus Temu, Shein, and AliExpress
Amazon’s move was widely interpreted as its response to the growth of Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop. Temu competes most directly in broad, ultra-low-price general merchandise. Shein is especially strong in trend-driven fashion and accessories. AliExpress offers a broad cross-border marketplace with substantial seller and shipping variation.

- The total price after delivery, tax, and any applicable import charge.
- The estimated arrival date.
- The return window and whether return shipping is free.
- The buyer-protection process.
- Seller identity, reviews, dimensions, materials, and compatibility details.
- Whether the product is branded and whether authenticity matters.
Regular Amazon listings, Walmart, and dollar stores may be better choices when local availability, faster delivery, easier returns, or more predictable inspection outweighs the lowest advertised price.

Low prices can conceal low value
Ultra-low-cost products may use thinner materials, have inconsistent sizing, arrive with weaker packaging, or fail sooner. A $2 item that must be replaced immediately may cost more than a $10 item from a reliable brand.
Be cautious with safety-sensitive products
Use extra scrutiny with chargers, batteries, electrical adapters, cosmetics, supplements, medical devices, children’s products, infant products, and anything making a health or safety claim. Check the seller, specifications, certifications where relevant, materials, reviews, and return eligibility.
Allow more time
Haul is designed for non-urgent purchases. A typical one-to-two-week delivery window is materially different from Prime-like delivery. Do not use it for a gift, event, replacement part, or household item needed by a fixed date unless the listing provides enough margin.
Inspect the listing carefully
Before buying, verify the item’s dimensions, material, quantity, compatibility, seller information, reviews, estimated delivery date, and total checkout price. Product photos alone can be misleading, particularly for clothing, furniture, electronics, and accessories.

Understand the return economics
A shorter 15-day return window and the effort involved in returning a very inexpensive item can reduce the practical value of the guarantee. Read the item-specific policy before ordering, especially when fit, durability, or safety is important.
What happened after launch?
Amazon’s later official updates said Haul expanded beyond its original U.S.-only mobile beta to 25 countries and regions, with further expansion planned in 2026. Amazon also said Haul had more than one million products priced below $10 as of November 2025.
Amazon separately introduced the Amazon Bazaar app for additional markets. These later developments are separate from the original June 2024 report, but they show that Amazon turned the proposed discount concept into an ongoing international low-price channel.

Haul may make sense for non-urgent, low-risk purchases such as simple organizers, decorations, craft supplies, and basic accessories—particularly for shoppers willing to combine items to reach the free-delivery threshold.
It is a poor fit for safety-critical products, items needed quickly, products where durability or fit matters, premium or authenticated brands, and purchases requiring strong warranty support. The central decision is whether the expected savings justify slower shipping and greater uncertainty about quality and after-sale service.
