Amazon first previewed the aircraft in November 2022 and began commercial MK30 service in November 2024 in the West Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area and College Station, Texas. The aircraft can carry packages weighing up to five pounds, fly as far as 7.5 miles from an Amazon facility, and deliver eligible orders in under an hour—but only when the customer, product, weather, airspace, and delivery location all qualify.
What Amazon originally previewed
Amazon introduced the MK30 as the next-generation aircraft for its Prime Air delivery program. The November 2022 announcement described a smaller, lighter, quieter, longer-range drone intended to succeed the MK27-2. Amazon expected the new aircraft to enter service in 2024.

The original design goals included fully autonomous flight, improved weather tolerance, longer operating range, and delivery of packages weighing five pounds or less. Amazon’s announcement is available in its MK30 reveal.
“Preview” was important wording. Amazon was showing the aircraft and its planned capabilities, not announcing immediate availability to most customers. The commercial launch followed in 2024.

MK30 specifications that matter to customers

The noise figures should be treated as Amazon’s own comparisons, not independent laboratory results. The two public Amazon sources also use different percentages and wording. See Amazon’s Arizona launch description and the AWS overview of the delivery system.
How an MK30 delivery works
- Address qualification: Amazon checks whether the address is inside an active Prime Air service area and can be safely served.
- Product qualification: The item must meet the weight, size, packaging, handling, and safety requirements.
- Delivery-point selection: The customer selects or confirms an approved delivery point. This is a mapped location, not simply any spot in a yard.
- Flight preparation: Amazon checks inventory, weather, airspace, and operational conditions.
- Autonomous flight: The MK30 leaves a local delivery facility, flies to the area, and uses onboard systems to navigate and detect obstacles.
- Package release: The aircraft assesses the delivery site before lowering or releasing the package.
- Return or fallback: The drone returns to the facility. If conditions become unsafe, Amazon may cancel the drone option or use another delivery method.
Amazon says its wider system combines GPS, vision-based navigation, weather data, airspace information, geospatial mapping, and preplanned contingency routes. Customers may be able to select or modify a suitable delivery point in their address book or during checkout.
How far can the MK30 fly?
Amazon describes a maximum operating radius of 7.5 miles from a delivery facility. A theoretical circle with that radius covers roughly 177 square miles, while FAA documents use an approximately 174-square-mile operational figure in some planning material. Neither number represents the actual customer footprint.

What can the MK30 deliver?
The five-pound limit makes the MK30 suitable for small, time-sensitive purchases rather than ordinary large Amazon orders. Amazon has described more than 50,000 everyday essentials in the Arizona service, including household, beauty, office, and technology products. That figure is Amazon’s description of the Arizona offering and does not mean every product is available to every address.
Likely candidates include a small household replacement, an office supply, a personal-care item, or another purchase where speed matters more than quantity. Oversized or heavy products, special-handling items, unsuitable packaging, and products that cannot safely be released at the approved location may be excluded. A mixed shopping cart may also be split, with only some items qualifying for drone delivery.
For personal-finance purposes, drone delivery should be viewed as a delivery option—not a reason to buy more products or assume that a Prime membership guarantees access. Eligibility appears at the address and item level during the Amazon shopping process.
Where is MK30 service available?
The firmly established commercial locations are:
- College Station, Texas
- The West Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona, including operations launched from Amazon’s Tolleson site
Amazon and the FAA have discussed or reviewed expansion into additional markets. FAA materials from 2026 describe proposed or related operations in places including Omaha, Florida, Detroit, and Chicago. Those documents are evidence of proposed or authorized activity, not proof that every listed location is already serving customers.

There is no basis for describing MK30 delivery as available nationwide or throughout every suburb near Phoenix. The current service remains local and conditional. The FAA’s environmental-review materials are useful for separating proposed operations from established customer service.
Why FAA beyond-visual-line-of-sight approval matters
A delivery drone cannot scale efficiently if a human observer must keep every aircraft in sight for the entire flight. Amazon’s FAA authorization for certain beyond-visual-line-of-sight, or BVLOS, operations allows Prime Air to use the MK30’s onboard detect-and-avoid capabilities under specified conditions.
This is a major regulatory step because it makes longer-range and higher-volume operations more practical. It is not blanket permission to fly MK30 aircraft anywhere in the United States. The authorization applies to defined operations and must be combined with other aviation, environmental, airspace, and local requirements.

The FAA’s package-delivery guidance explains the broader regulatory context. “FAA-approved” should therefore be read as approval for particular operations, not unrestricted nationwide authorization.

How Amazon says it handles safety
Amazon says the MK30 uses multiple safety systems, detect-and-avoid technology, automated return-to-station behavior, weather and airspace monitoring, mapped delivery locations, and contingency routes. The company also says it used aerospace-style design verification and safety testing before commercial deployment. Those are company claims and should not be confused with independent evidence that drone delivery is safer than conventional delivery.
Autonomous does not mean unmonitored or risk-free. Potential problems include:
- Unexpected obstacles, utility wires, cranes, birds, or other aircraft
- GPS, communications, or navigation problems
- Wind, rain, heat, poor visibility, or other weather changes
- People or pets entering a delivery area
- An inaccurate or obstructed mapped delivery point
- Temporary airspace restrictions or nearby aviation activity
- Package damage, inaccurate placement, or an emergency return
- Noise, privacy, and community concerns
If the system determines that a mission cannot continue safely, the customer may lose the drone option, experience a delay, or receive the package by a conventional method instead.

Is drone delivery financially practical?
The MK30 is best understood as a complement to Amazon’s logistics network, not a replacement for delivery vans. A drone can move one small order quickly and directly, avoiding some road travel. That may be valuable for an urgent household item or another purchase where the time saved matters.

But an aerial delivery still requires fulfillment, packaging, charging, maintenance, dispatch, software, regulatory compliance, and customer support. A van can carry many packages on one route, while the drone’s payload and operating area are much smaller. The full delivery system is also not automatically emissions-free simply because the aircraft is electric.
Drone delivery has a stronger use case when:
- The order is small and lightweight.
- The customer values speed highly.
- The address has a clear, approved delivery point.
- Weather and airspace conditions are favorable.
- The facility is close enough to serve the address.
It is a poor fit for large baskets, heavy goods, poor weather, obstructed neighborhoods, or customers who need a specific delivery location that Amazon has not mapped or approved.
What Prime membership does—and does not—do
The relevant consumer product is Amazon’s shopping and Prime delivery service, not the MK30 aircraft itself. Amazon has not established a separate MK30 purchase, universal drone-delivery subscription, or generally applicable MK30 surcharge in the supplied information.
Customers can check Amazon Prime and Amazon shopping for current membership and checkout information. However, Prime membership does not create geographic eligibility or guarantee that a particular item will be delivered by drone. The available option depends on the customer’s address, inventory, item characteristics, weather, facility capacity, and operating conditions.
What the MK30 means for Amazon’s delivery network
The MK30 represents a meaningful engineering and regulatory step: a quieter, longer-range aircraft designed for autonomous commercial delivery and approved BVLOS operations under defined conditions. It could eventually reduce some short van trips for small, urgent orders.
That does not make it a general-purpose parcel network. The five-pound payload, roughly 7.5-mile facility radius, need for mapped delivery points, weather limits, local approvals, and narrow operating footprint all constrain the service. Even proposed expansion would need to translate into actual facilities, authorized operations, eligible inventory, and customer-level availability.
