Amazon’s Kindle Scribe Colorsoft officially launched in the United States on December 10, 2025. That date is now past, so this is a released 2025 device—not an upcoming product.
The Colorsoft combines an 11-inch color E Ink display, Kindle reading, handwritten notebooks, and document annotation. It launched at approximately $629.99 for 32GB, with a 64GB model listed at approximately $679.99. When did the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft launch?
Amazon announced the redesigned Scribe lineup on September 30, 2025, but initially gave only a “later this year” availability window. On December 4, Amazon confirmed the specific date: December 10, 2025. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft then became available in the United States on that date.

What is the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft?
The Colorsoft is three devices in one:
- A large Kindle e-reader.
- A digital notebook for handwritten notes and sketches.
- A color E Ink surface for highlighting, diagrams, comics, illustrated books, and color-rich documents.
It is Amazon’s first color Kindle Scribe, but it should not be confused with the smaller Kindle Colorsoft introduced for color reading. The Scribe Colorsoft is the larger, writing-focused model and includes Amazon’s Premium Pen.

Its color display is designed for low-distraction reading and writing, not for replacing an LCD or OLED tablet. Independent review coverage described the colors as useful but relatively muted compared with conventional screens. That makes the device better suited to color-coded notes and illustrations than to vivid video, gaming, or rich media.

Amazon also claimed that this redesigned Scribe generation was 40% faster for writing and page turns than its predecessor. That is Amazon’s claim, not an independently verified benchmark. Firmware can change; Amazon’s software-update page listed version 5.19.5 for the Colorsoft in an August 2026 snapshot.
What does color add?
Color is most useful when it changes how you organize information:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Use different pen colors for categories in meeting or lecture notes.
- Apply multicolor highlights to study material.
- Separate layers in diagrams, mind maps, and project plans.
- Read comics, illustrated books, textbooks, and PDFs with color elements more naturally.
- Add shading to drawings and illustrations.
Amazon lists 10 pen colors and five highlighter colors. The result is still reflective E Ink, so colors are less saturated and refreshes are slower than on an iPad. If you mainly read black-and-white novels, the color capability may not justify paying a premium.
Writing, notebooks, and documents
The Colorsoft is strongest when used as a large digital notebook. You can create handwritten notebooks, organize them into folders or workspaces, select different pen and highlighter colors, and use shading tools for drawings.
Amazon also promotes AI-powered notebook search and productivity features. Documents stored through Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive can be accessed as part of the device’s document workflow, although feature availability may depend on software version, account, language, and region.

There is an important distinction between writing on a blank notebook page and annotating a Kindle book. Notebook writing is the straightforward use case. Kindle-book annotations rely on Amazon’s reading interface and Active Canvas-style behavior, including expandable margins, and independent reviews found that the workflow could still feel frustrating. Imported documents and PDFs may also support different annotation behavior. Do not assume that every file type offers identical pen tools.

Is the Colorsoft worth the premium over a regular Scribe?
For personal-finance purposes, the central question is not whether color is attractive. It is whether you will use it often enough to justify a device that launched near $630 before a protective cover or other accessories.
Choose the Colorsoft if:
- You write by hand frequently and genuinely need color-coded notes.
- You read comics, illustrated books, textbooks, or color-heavy PDFs.
- You want an 11-inch writing surface and a distraction-free device.
- You already use Kindle and Amazon’s document ecosystem.
- You value paper-like reading more than apps, video, and multitasking.
Choose a regular Kindle Scribe if:
- Your reading is mainly black-and-white novels.
- You take handwritten notes but rarely need color.
- You would rather keep the savings for a case or another device.
- You want the large Scribe format without paying for a feature you may not use.
A regular Scribe is likely the better value when color is merely a convenience. The Colorsoft makes more financial sense when color is part of your normal reading, study, or work routine—not something you expect to try occasionally.

Smaller Kindle Colorsoft
Choose the smaller Kindle Colorsoft if your priority is color reading rather than handwriting. It is more portable and better suited to books, comics, and magazines, while the Scribe Colorsoft justifies its size and price primarily through its notebook and large-screen writing experience.
reMarkable Paper Pro
The reMarkable Paper Pro is a more direct alternative for people focused on handwritten organization and a dedicated digital-paper ecosystem. Compare pen bundles, cloud features, subscription policies, file handling, and color behavior before deciding. Reviewer impressions that one device has “better” color are not universal substitutes for a controlled comparison.

- Great value - Includes a Kindle Scribe Colorosft (64GB) with Premium Pen, executive premium leather folio cover, and 20W power adapter–up to a $840 value.
- Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Colorsoft display – A custom-built oxide-based display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
- Feels just like paper – Textured surface and ultra-fast responsiveness for a natural writing experience. Included Premium Pen requires no charging.
- Thin, light, fast – Comfortable, paper-inspired design with fluid performance and a large 11” display that gives you space to write, read, and think.
The Scribe Colorsoft has the advantage if Kindle book access is central to your routine. reMarkable may be the better fit if writing and paper-like document organization matter more than Amazon’s reading storefront.
iPad Air with a stylus
An iPad is the better financial choice only if you will use its broader capabilities. It offers apps, web browsing, video, multitasking, cloud services, and more saturated color. It also brings more distractions, shorter typical e-reader-style endurance, and the additional cost of a stylus. Tom’s Guide cited an 11-inch iPad Air at $599 and an Apple Pencil Pro at $129 at the time of its comparison; current prices should be checked on Apple’s iPad Air and Apple Pencil pages.
The Scribe Colorsoft is not a tablet replacement. It is a focused reading-and-writing device that trades app flexibility for a paper-like display and a less distracting experience.
What to check before buying in 2026
- Confirm the current price: The $629.99 figure is the U.S. launch price for 32GB, not a guarantee of the current price.
- Check the exact model: Make sure the listing says Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, not the smaller Kindle Colorsoft or a regular Scribe.
- Compare storage needs: Choose 64GB only if your document library, notebooks, and downloads justify the extra cost.
- Budget for protection: An 11-inch, relatively expensive screen makes a cover a sensible part of the total purchase cost.
- Verify regional availability: Release dates and stock vary by country and configuration.
- Check software-dependent features: AI tools, integrations, and annotation behavior can change with firmware and regional rollout.
Bottom line
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft’s official U.S. launch date was December 10, 2025, and it is now a released product. Its value depends on a narrow but meaningful combination: a large Kindle screen, handwritten notes, and color E Ink.
Recommended Free Tools
Buy it if those three features solve a real reading, study, or work problem. Choose a regular Scribe if you mostly need black-and-white reading and writing, a smaller Kindle Colorsoft if you only want color reading, or an iPad if you need apps and general-purpose computing.
