Bottom line: The deal behind this headline was real, but it was historical—not a verified offer today. On September 3, 2024, Amazon’s 2022-release base Kindle fell from $99.99 to $84.99, matching its July 2024 Prime Day price. That was a solid recurring discount, but not an all-time low. Because Amazon now lists a separate 2024-release Kindle, buyers must confirm the exact generation, storage, ad status and seller before treating any similar price as a bargain.
The deal was $84.99 for the 2022 Kindle
The original promotion covered Amazon’s Kindle, 11th Generation, 2022 release. Its price dropped from about $100 to $85, saving approximately $15, or 15%. The offer matched the price available during July 2024 Prime Day, but contemporary coverage specifically noted that it was not an all-time low. Engadget’s original deal report was published on September 3, 2024.

That price should not be presented as a live August or September 2026 offer. Amazon pricing, inventory and eligibility change quickly, and the available evidence does not verify a current listing at $84.99. If you see a similar deal now, check the Amazon product page and checkout screen rather than relying on a cached deal page or comparison widget.
Why the $85 Kindle was appealing
The 2022 base Kindle is designed for readers who want a dedicated e-reader without paying Paperwhite prices. Its main features include:
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- A six-inch E Ink display with 300 pixels per inch.
- 16GB of internal storage, with approximately 11.5GB available to the user according to Amazon’s documentation.
- USB-C charging.
- An adjustable front light and dark mode.
- Adjustable text size, margins, fonts and reading themes.
- VoiceView accessibility support.
- Access to Kindle e-books and compatible Audible narration, including device switching through Whispersync where supported.
That combination is enough for a large e-book library. Audiobooks use considerably more storage, however, so readers who download many audiobooks should not assume that 16GB has the same practical capacity for audio as it does for text.
The compact size and low weight are the strongest reasons to choose the base model. It is easy to carry and primarily intended for ordinary book reading, especially indoors.
The important catches
It is not waterproof
The base Kindle lacks the waterproofing found on current Paperwhite models. Amazon lists the 12th-generation Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition as IPX8-rated. A base Kindle is therefore a poor choice for bath, pool, beach or frequent rainy-commute reading.

There is no warm-light adjustment
The base model has a front light, but it does not offer the Paperwhite’s adjustable warm light. That matters most to readers who read for long periods at night or prefer a warmer display after dark.
The screen is smaller
The six-inch display is portable, but the Paperwhite’s larger screen can show more text at once and reduce page turns. Readers with larger text settings, visual preferences or long reading sessions may find the upgrade more comfortable.
Ads can explain a lower price
Amazon has historically sold Kindle configurations with lock-screen advertising at a lower price than ad-free versions. Before comparing prices, check whether the listing says with ads or without ads. A headline price may also apply only to one color or storage configuration.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Some hands-on coverage found the touchscreen inconsistent
The original Engadget coverage criticized the touchscreen gestures as not always responsive. That is a reported hands-on observation, not a guarantee that every unit behaves the same way, but it is worth considering if fast navigation is important to you.

Amazon now identifies both a Kindle, 11th Generation, 2022 release and a Kindle, 11th Generation, 2024 release in its support materials. The model year and release year should therefore appear in your buying notes, especially when comparing an old deal article with a current product page. Amazon’s device-identification guide and Kindle user-guide index list the releases separately.
Do not assume that a discounted older Kindle is automatically the best value. If a newer base Kindle is available for only a modest premium, its newer hardware may justify paying more. The precise comparison depends on the live prices and configurations available when you buy.

Base Kindle versus the alternatives
| Model | What it adds or emphasizes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Base Kindle | Small six-inch display, 16GB storage, front light and dark mode | Lowest-cost, portable reading |
| Kindle Paperwhite | Larger display, adjustable warm light and IPX8 waterproofing | Frequent readers, outdoor use and nighttime reading |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition | 32GB storage, wireless charging, warm light and waterproofing | Readers who want extra storage and premium convenience |
| Kindle Colorsoft | Color display, with versions listed by Amazon at 16GB or 32GB | Illustrated books, covers and comics |
| Kindle Scribe | Large-format reading and handwriting or document annotation | Note-taking and writing, not simply inexpensive novel reading |
Amazon’s current documentation lists 2024 Paperwhite models, Colorsoft devices and 2025 and 2026 Scribe releases. It does not make the base Kindle the universal best buy; it makes it the sensible choice only when low cost and portability matter more than premium features.
When the base Kindle is the better financial choice
Buy the base model when the verified price is at or below the historical $84.99 benchmark, you mainly read indoors, and you do not need waterproofing or warm light. At that price, paying extra for features you will not use is difficult to justify.
It is also a reasonable replacement for an aging Kindle if your current device has a failing battery or very little storage and you do not need handwriting, color or a larger screen.

When paying more for a Paperwhite makes sense
The Paperwhite is the more defensible long-term purchase when the price gap is manageable and you will use its features regularly. Choose it if you:
- Read near water or outdoors.
- Prefer a larger display.
- Read at night and want warm-light adjustment.
- Expect to keep the device for several years.
For many frequent readers, paying more once for waterproofing and a larger, warmer-lit display may be better value than replacing a cheaper device later. That is a use-case judgment, not a claim that the Paperwhite is always worth its premium.
What to verify before buying
- Generation: Confirm whether the listing is the 2022 or 2024 base Kindle.
- Storage: Check that it is the capacity you expect, especially if you use Audible.
- Ad status: Identify whether the device includes lock-screen ads.
- Color: Make sure the advertised price applies to the color you want.
- Seller and condition: Confirm that the item is new and sold by the expected seller, rather than refurbished, used or supplied by an unrelated marketplace merchant.
- Prime requirement: Do not assume Prime membership is necessary—or sufficient—unless the live listing says so.
- Shipping and tax: Check the final checkout total and delivery date for your ZIP code.
- Bundle contents: A case, subscription or other bundle should not be compared directly with the price of the bare device.
- Price history: “Prime Day price” means price parity with a prior promotion. It does not mean the lowest price the product has ever reached.
Kindle Unlimited is separate
Buying a Kindle does not automatically include Kindle Unlimited. Kindle Unlimited is an optional subscription to participating e-books, and Amazon states that Prime membership is not required. Catalog availability and pricing vary by marketplace. Audiobook purchases and Audible access are also separate considerations. See Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited documentation before treating a subscription trial or bundle as part of the device’s value.

Buy now if the live listing is for the desired model and configuration, the price is at or below roughly $85, and the base Kindle’s limitations do not matter to you.
Wait if the discount is only a few dollars, the price applies only to an unwanted configuration, a newer base model costs little more, or a major Amazon shopping event is close. Also wait if what you really want is waterproofing, warm light or a larger display; a cheap base Kindle will not add those features later.
For a buyer who wants the least expensive dedicated Kindle, the historical $84.99 offer was good—but ordinary rather than exceptional. For a frequent, outdoor or nighttime reader, the Paperwhite may provide better value even when it costs more. Prices can change without notice, so make the final decision from the exact Amazon listing and checkout total, not from the 2024 headline.
