Amazon’s published U.S. guidance says non-Prime shoppers can get free delivery on eligible orders of $35 or more. The headline’s change from $25 to $35, however, refers to a regional test Amazon confirmed in August 2023—not proof that the same ZIP-code-based test is still active today. Check the product page and your checkout for the terms that apply to your order.
What Amazon’s $35 minimum means now
Amazon’s public U.S. guidance, published March 11, 2025, says non-Prime customers can qualify for free delivery by spending at least $35 per order. The items must be eligible for free shipping and shipped and fulfilled by Amazon. The guidance gives a delivery estimate of five to eight days for these orders. Amazon’s free-delivery guidance
Check eligibility item by item
The order total alone does not guarantee free delivery. Amazon says to look for free-shipping eligibility on the product detail page and confirm the delivery terms for the destination at checkout. Marketplace listings that are not both shipped and fulfilled by Amazon may not meet the stated conditions.
What changed in the 2023 test
On August 28, 2023, Amazon confirmed to TechCrunch and the Associated Press that it was testing a higher non-Prime free-shipping minimum in some regions: $35 instead of $25. TechCrunch reported that Amazon assigned the test by ZIP-code-grouped markets, so customers in the same region saw the same threshold. The reports said Prime members were not affected.

Contemporary coverage also quoted Amazon spokesperson Kristina Pressentin: “We continually evaluate our offerings and make adjustments based on those assessments.” TechCrunch’s August 28, 2023 report · Associated Press coverage
Does the regional test still apply?
The available sources do not establish whether the 2023 ZIP-code test remains active or whether all U.S. locations now have the same threshold. Amazon’s public guidance gives a $35 minimum but does not publish a location-by-location breakdown or explain the test’s present status. For a specific purchase, use the item’s current product page and the shipping options shown at checkout for your address.

How to decide whether Prime is worth it
Amazon’s published U.S. Prime prices are $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Whether membership is worthwhile depends on your order frequency, how often your usual items qualify for non-Prime free delivery, and how much faster delivery matters to you. Amazon’s guidance says eligible non-Prime free-delivery orders can take five to eight days; it does not provide a personalized break-even calculation.
