No—not from any website. Amazon’s Buy for Me can place an order for certain eligible products sold on participating brand websites. You confirm the checkout details through Amazon, but the merchant—not Amazon—handles shipping, returns, exchanges, and customer service. For other products, Amazon’s Shop Direct experience may take you to the merchant’s site to complete the purchase yourself.
What Buy for Me does
Buy for Me is an option for products Amazon does not sell in its own store. When an eligible item appears through Amazon’s external-shopping results, you can ask Amazon to place the order on your behalf. Amazon first announced the feature on April 3, 2025, as a beta for a subset of U.S. customers using iOS and Android. Its original announcement described a limited selection of brand stores and products.

Amazon’s later Shop Direct materials describe a broader experience across Amazon.com, the Amazon Shopping app, mobile web browsers, and Rufus. Depending on the item, you may be able to buy through Buy for Me or be sent to the merchant to check out directly. The availability of these surfaces does not mean every merchant or product is eligible.
How the purchase works
- Find an eligible item. Search for a branded product in Amazon. In some cases, external listings appear in a section labeled “Shop brand sites directly.”
- Choose the purchase route. If the product offers Buy for Me, open its in-app product page and select that option. Otherwise, Shop Direct may send you to the merchant’s website to purchase it yourself.
- Review and confirm the checkout details. For Buy for Me, Amazon says it presents the shipping address, taxes, shipping fees, and payment method for your confirmation before placing the order.
- Check for the merchant’s confirmation. Amazon says the brand store emails the order confirmation. The order also appears in the app’s “Buy for Me Orders” tab, where Amazon provides tracking.
Amazon says its agentic AI completes the merchant-site checkout using encrypted customer information. Amazon also says it cannot see a customer’s separate or previous orders on those brand websites. Those are Amazon’s descriptions of its process and data access, not an independent security assessment.

Amazon describes both routes under Shop Direct, but says only some products qualify for Buy for Me.
Who is responsible for delivery, returns, and support?
The merchant remains responsible after checkout. Amazon says the brand store manages delivery, returns, exchanges, and customer service. If a package is late, an item arrives damaged, or you need to return a purchase, the merchant is the party Amazon identifies for post-purchase help. Amazon’s app tracking tab is useful for checking order status, but it does not shift those responsibilities to Amazon.

Before confirming, review the merchant’s terms and the displayed taxes and shipping fees. The fact that checkout is initiated through Amazon does not establish that the merchant’s return policy, delivery terms, or customer-support arrangements are the same as Amazon’s.

Amazon’s terminology is conditional: its materials refer to “select products,” eligible Buy for Me items, and cases where external listings appear. Merchants can choose whether to participate, and Amazon says catalogs can be connected through third-party product-feed providers. That participation and eligibility limit is why “any site” is an overstatement.

Amazon’s later Shop Direct announcement reported more than 100 million products from over 400,000 merchants, with tens of millions available through Buy for Me. A separate Amazon feature overview said Buy for Me availability had grown from 65,000 products at launch to more than half a million at the time of that overview. These are Amazon-reported snapshots; the pages do not provide exposed publication dates for those later figures, and the counts should not be treated as independently audited or directly comparable.

What this means for shoppers
- It can simplify checkout, not guarantee availability. You still need to find a product that Amazon and the merchant make eligible for the feature.
- It does not make Amazon the seller. The merchant’s role in fulfillment and after-sales service remains important even when Amazon places the order.
- Check the total and terms before confirming. Pay attention to shipping, taxes, and the merchant’s policies rather than assuming the purchase follows Amazon’s usual store rules.
