When did Amazon’s book sale overlap Independent Bookstore Day?
Amazon’s first book sale took place in May 2024, according to Poets & Writers. In 2025, the sale ran April 23–28, and Independent Bookstore Day fell on April 26, as TechCrunch reported on April 26, 2025.
Amazon told TechCrunch: “The dates for our sale were set this year to accommodate additional participating countries.” That is the company’s explanation; the available reporting does not independently establish why the dates were chosen or prove that Amazon intended to target independent bookstores.
What did booksellers and advocates say?
American Booksellers Association CEO Allison Hill called the timing “At best it’s insensitive and at worst it seems like a tactic to hurt small businesses,” in remarks to Vulture quoted by TechCrunch. Bookshop.org CEO Andy Hunter also sharply criticized Amazon’s timing, saying those responsible “should be ashamed.” Those are attributed reactions, not evidence that Amazon scheduled the sale to harm independent shops.

In a later Poets & Writers feature, Hill said shoppers came out to support local bookstores and protest what they saw as Amazon’s “stepping on the indies.” The episode illustrates a choice some readers make: weighing price and convenience against where a purchase goes and the local experience a bookstore may offer.
What do the reported sales figures show?
Hunter told Poets & Writers that Bookshop.org sales “spiked 340 percent that day,” referring to Independent Bookstore Day during the 2025 overlap. He also said some bookstores reported sales 50 percent above the previous year. These are figures reported by Bookshop.org’s CEO; the article does not present them as audited industry totals, and the stores in the latter claim are unnamed.

Poets & Writers described more than 1,600 stores participating in Independent Bookstore Day. The reported figures suggest a strong response among the organizations and shops discussed, but they do not establish the event’s total effect on all independent bookstores.
When is Independent Bookstore Day?
The American Booksellers Association holds Independent Bookstore Day on the last Saturday in April. It scheduled the 2026 event for April 25, describing it as the celebration’s 13th anniversary. The ABA’s 2026 announcement included a searchable store map, limited-edition books and bookish merchandise, and Spirit Week activities.

The ABA also listed Bookshop.org and Libro.fm as event partners. Its April 2026 materials included free standard shipping from Bookshop.org April 25–26 and a Libro.fm audiobook sale April 20–26. Those promotions have expired; event offers and participating stores can vary from year to year.
How can readers support an independent bookstore?
Readers can buy directly from a local shop, attend its events, or use a bookstore-supporting online retailer. Bookshop.org and Libro.fm are identified as services supporting independent bookstores in the Poets & Writers coverage and ABA event materials. Check current terms, formats, prices and availability with the retailer or store; the past event promotions do not establish what is available now.

There are trade-offs. An online sale may offer a lower price, while a local shop may offer browsing, personal service, events and community ties. Green Apple Books co-owner Pete Mulvihill described those strengths as “immediate gratification, a superior browsing experience, fun and enlightening events, community ties, personal service from a book-loving human.” This is a bookseller’s perspective, and the experience differs by shop. Supporting a local store does not require assuming it will match every sale price.

The 2025 book sale and the 2026 Independent Bookstore Day promotions are over. Amazon separately announced Prime Big Deal Days for October 6–7, 2026, saying thousands of print-book deals would be included, with discounts of up to 65 percent.
