Amazon did remove Just Walk Out from most large-format U.S. Amazon Fresh stores in 2024. But the technology was not simply fake, and it was not shut down everywhere. Amazon later closed its physical Fresh and Go formats in 2026 while continuing to offer Just Walk Out to third-party retailers.
The short answer
Amazon did retire Just Walk Out from most large-format U.S. Amazon Fresh grocery stores in 2024, replacing it with the scanner-equipped Dash Cart. But Amazon did not kill the technology worldwide, and the evidence does not support saying it was simply fake or entirely operated by remote human cashiers.

The fuller story is more useful: Just Walk Out worked best for small, fast purchases in tightly controlled environments such as stadiums, airports, hospitals, universities and convenience stores. It was a poor fit for the complexity of a full grocery trip. Amazon later announced the closure of its physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores in 2026, making the retreat broader than one checkout technology.

What Amazon actually stopped
Several Amazon products are easy to confuse:
- Amazon Fresh: Amazon’s grocery business, including delivery and physical stores.
- Amazon Go: Amazon’s cashierless convenience-store format and the original home of Just Walk Out.
- Just Walk Out: The checkout technology, now sold by Amazon Web Services to other retailers.
- Amazon Dash Cart: A smart cart that lets shoppers scan items, weigh some products and see a running total.
- Amazon One: A separate palm-recognition identity and payment service.
The April 2024 decision applied primarily to Just Walk Out in large-format U.S. Amazon Fresh stores. Amazon said the technology would continue in smaller stores and third-party venues. Its explanation focused on grocery shoppers wanting to see their total, discounts, promotions and receipts while they shop.
That distinction matters financially. “Amazon removed Just Walk Out from Fresh stores” is accurate. “Amazon killed Just Walk Out” is not.
The timeline: from Amazon Go to a narrower business
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 2018 | Amazon opened its first public Amazon Go store using the cashierless model. |
| 2020 | Amazon introduced physical Amazon Fresh grocery stores while testing different checkout formats. |
| April 2024 | Amazon confirmed that most large-format U.S. Fresh stores would move from Just Walk Out to Dash Cart. |
| July–September 2024 | Amazon announced a multimodal model intended to improve performance in difficult environments and additional stadium and university deployments. |
| 2025 | Amazon expanded third-party deployments and portable RFID pilots. |
| January 27, 2026 | Amazon announced plans to close its physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, while converting some locations to Whole Foods and emphasizing delivery. |
| 2026 | Amazon continued operating Just Walk Out as a third-party retail technology and reported more than 360 locations in five countries. |
| June 3, 2026 | Amazon One’s participating-business service was scheduled to end under current American Express terms. This was separate from the continued card- and mobile-wallet use of Just Walk Out. |
Amazon’s announcement about the store closures said it had not found a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and economic model for broad physical-store expansion. That is a wider business conclusion than “the cameras could not recognize products.”

How Just Walk Out worked
In a typical installation, a shopper taps a payment card, mobile wallet, app or another approved credential at the entrance. Amazon’s system assigns the shopper or group a temporary numerical identity associated with that payment method.
Ceiling-mounted cameras, shelf-weight sensors, computer vision, object recognition, machine-learning models and a digital map of the store work together to infer which products are picked up and returned. The system builds a virtual cart. When the shopper exits, the payment method is charged and a receipt is generated.
Amazon describes the technology in more detail in its technical explanation of Just Walk Out. Depending on the merchandise and deployment, the system can also use RFID. RFID is particularly useful for soft goods such as clothing and fan merchandise, while cameras and shelf sensors are commonly used for packaged products.
Just Walk Out itself does not require facial recognition or palm biometrics. Amazon says its standard shopper identity is a temporary numerical code tied to the payment method. Amazon One used palm recognition, but it was a separate service that could be used alongside Just Walk Out.
Were humans secretly checking every purchase?
This is where the most viral version of the story becomes too simple.

What was reported
The Information reported that Amazon had more than 1,000 people in India working on Just Walk Out as of mid-2022. The work reportedly included labeling images and videos to train the system and manually reviewing some transactions. A widely repeated claim said roughly 700 of every 1,000 transactions were reviewed in 2022.
The exact review rate is not independently verifiable from the public record, and the reporting relied substantially on a source familiar with the operation. Amazon disputed the characterization.
What Amazon said
Amazon denied that workers in India were watching shoppers live and manually creating ordinary receipts. The company said employees labeled or annotated real and synthetic shopping data, while computer-vision algorithms generated receipts automatically.

Amazon’s own technical material acknowledges that human annotation is part of developing the machine-learning system. It also says unusual or novel scenarios can require manual retraining or intervention.
The most defensible conclusion is this:
Just Walk Out was not simply a thousand remote cashiers watching every customer live. But it was not completely human-free either. Human workers were involved in data labeling, model improvement and at least some exception or transaction-review work, although the scope and frequency of that work remain disputed.
That is normal for many machine-learning systems. Training data, quality control and exception handling do not automatically mean the advertised automation was fake. They do mean that “AI-powered” does not necessarily mean “no human labor anywhere in the process.”
Why Amazon preferred Dash Cart for large grocery trips
Amazon’s stated reason was not simply that Just Walk Out was too slow. It was that full-size grocery shopping has different needs from buying a drink at a stadium.
Grocery shoppers often want to:
- Watch a running total and stay within a budget.
- See coupons, savings and promotions before paying.
- Review an itemized receipt immediately.
- Handle produce and other variable-weight products.
- Find products using a shopping list or store map.
- Make deliberate substitutions and compare similar products.
Dash Cart makes the shopper participate more directly. Items are scanned or entered as they go into the cart, some products can be weighed, and a screen displays the accumulating total. It is not cashierless in the same fully passive sense as Just Walk Out, but it gives shoppers more visibility and control.

Amazon reported that 80% of Dash Cart users were repeat users, satisfaction was 98%, and Dash Cart shoppers spent 10% more than non-Dash-Cart shoppers in the first quarter of 2024. Those are Amazon’s internal figures, not independently audited results.
Independent testing complicates the idea that Dash Cart won because it was faster. GeekWire compared the same 10-item list and recorded approximately:
| Checkout method | Approximate time | Observed trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Just Walk Out | 9 minutes | Fastest and most seamless in the test |
| Dash Cart | 12 minutes | Provided visibility but felt clunky and inconsistent |
| Traditional cashier | 14 minutes | Slowest, but familiar and assisted |
The test was small and not a controlled laboratory study. The reporters became more familiar with the store on successive trips, creating a learning-order limitation. Still, it supports an important point: Amazon’s choice was about the overall grocery mission, not raw checkout speed alone.

A stadium customer may want a drink and snack before missing part of a game. An airport traveler may want bottled water and a sandwich. A hospital employee may need a quick late-night meal. These are small, mission-driven purchases where avoiding a queue has unusually high value.
A weekly supermarket trip is different. The basket is larger, the assortment is more varied, and the cost of a recognition error is higher. Difficult cases include:
- Loose produce and items sold by weight.
- Nearly identical conventional and organic products.
- Fresh-food counters and bulk merchandise.
- Multiple shoppers reaching for the same shelf.
- Children, bags, coats and carts blocking camera views.
- Products returned to the wrong shelf.
- Glare or fogged doors on refrigerated cases.
- Merchandise moved from its mapped location.
- Alcohol and other age-restricted products requiring employee checks.
- Groups entering under one payment credential.
- A shopper picking up and returning several similar products.
Amazon has publicly discussed challenges involving occluded cameras, changing layouts, product misplacement, multiple shoppers and complex pick-up-and-return behavior. Its July 2024 announcement described a newer multimodal model intended to improve accuracy in these cases, but that remains a company product claim rather than an independently reproduced benchmark.
| Environment | Typical basket | Main customer goal | Likely fit for Just Walk Out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stadium | Small | Buy quickly without missing the event | Strong |
| Airport | Small | Save time before boarding | Strong |
| Hospital | Small | Access food and essentials at odd hours | Strong |
| University or workplace breakroom | Small | Convenient snacks and meals | Strong |
| Weekly grocery trip | Large | Control spending, compare products and manage produce | Mixed |
| Full supermarket | Large and varied | Selection, assistance and accurate itemization | Difficult |
Did Just Walk Out actually work?
The answer depends on what “work” means.
Technically: yes, within defined conditions
Independent testing found Just Walk Out faster than Dash Cart and a traditional checkout for a small basket. The technology has also continued operating in third-party airports, stadiums, universities, hospitals, hotels, convention centers and convenience stores.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Amazon and its customers report positive results in selected venues. Amazon has cited a 47% increase in total sales per game at Lumen Field, a reduction in hospital wait times from 25 minutes to 3 minutes, and an 83% reduction in retail theft at UC San Diego. These are customer- or Amazon-reported case studies. They may also reflect changes in product mix, layout, event demand, queue abandonment or other operational factors, so they do not prove that the technology caused the entire improvement.

As a consumer experience: excellent for some missions, frustrating for others
For a few packaged products, walking in, picking up items and leaving can feel close to frictionless. For a large grocery basket, the lack of a live running total can be a disadvantage. A receipt that arrives later, an unclear dispute process or an employee check at the exit can also weaken the promise of instant checkout.
A 2025 peer-reviewed study of just-walk-out stores generally—not only Amazon—found benefits including convenience, faster transactions, easier searching and less social interaction. It also found barriers including reliability concerns, entry friction, payment unease, customer-service problems, privacy concerns and limited assortment. The research included 60 depth interviews and a 546-person online survey.
As Amazon’s large-format grocery strategy: no
Amazon removed it from most large-format Fresh stores, then announced the closure of its physical Fresh and Go formats. The company said it had not found the right distinctive customer experience or economics for broad expansion.

That is a business-model failure, not proof that every individual transaction failed. A system can be fast and accurate enough to run a stadium shop while still being too complex, costly or poorly matched to a supermarket.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Amazon’s 2026 retreat means
Amazon’s physical-retail retreat became broader than Just Walk Out:
- Amazon announced the closure of its physical Fresh and Go stores.
- Some locations were expected to become Whole Foods Market stores.
- Amazon continued emphasizing Whole Foods and online grocery delivery.
- Just Walk Out survived as a business-to-business retail technology.
- Amazon reported more than 360 third-party locations in five countries, 36.7 million items processed through 17.7 million shopping sessions in the prior year, and more than 40 Amazon fulfillment-center breakrooms using the technology.
- Amazon also promoted portable RFID lanes for events and pop-up stores, saying it had reduced deployment costs by more than 50% and installation time from weeks to hours for some newer deployments. Those are company claims and will vary by configuration.
The current Just Walk Out location directory is dynamic, so individual venues and availability can change. A shopper should check the venue’s own information before making a special trip.
Amazon One’s discontinuation is a separate issue. According to current American Express terms, the participating-business service ended on June 3, 2026. That does not mean card- or mobile-wallet-based Just Walk Out stopped working.

What this means for shoppers and retailers
For shoppers, the practical questions are less about whether a store uses “AI” and more about how payment, receipts and disputes work. Before using a cashierless location, check:

- Whether a receipt is available immediately or may be delayed.
- How to report a missing or incorrect item.
- Whether alcohol, age-restricted products or returns require employee assistance.
- Whether Amazon One or another biometric service is optional or unavailable.
For retailers, the decision is a format-and-economics problem. Just Walk Out can reduce queues, increase throughput and provide customer-flow data. It can also require ceiling cameras, shelf sensors, store mapping, payment and inventory integrations, calibration, model retraining, human exception handling and customer-service support.
The relevant comparison is not simply “AI versus humans.” It is the total combination of hardware, labor, customer effort, fraud controls, payment visibility and maintenance required for a particular store.
Possible alternatives include traditional cashier lanes, self-checkout, scan-and-go mobile apps, smart carts, RFID walk-through lanes, other computer-vision systems, online delivery and click-and-collect. Each shifts the work and risk among the retailer, shopper and technology provider.
The verdict
The headline “Amazon Fresh kills Just Walk Out—it never really worked” contains a real event but draws the wrong broad conclusion.
- Technically: Just Walk Out worked under defined conditions, especially for small baskets and standardized merchandise.
- As a shopping experience: It was often faster than alternatives, but not always better for customers who wanted a visible total, coupons, produce support or immediate assistance.
- As Amazon’s supermarket strategy: It failed to become the scalable, distinctive and economically compelling foundation Amazon wanted for large-format grocery.
Amazon did not prove that cashierless retail was fake. It learned that a working tracking system is not automatically the right product for every shopping mission. The likely future is a mix of technologies: computer vision for tightly curated packaged goods, RFID for some merchandise, smart carts and mobile scanning for larger baskets, and human help for the exceptions that customers care about most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Amazon kill Just Walk Out completely?
No. Amazon removed Just Walk Out from most large-format U.S. Fresh grocery stores in 2024, but continued selling and operating the technology in third-party venues such as airports, stadiums, hospitals, universities and convenience stores.
Were humans secretly processing every Just Walk Out transaction?
Not in the literal sense suggested by viral coverage. Amazon used human workers for data labeling, model improvement and some exception or transaction-review work, according to public reporting and Amazon’s own explanations. Amazon denied that workers were watching every shopper live and manually creating ordinary receipts.
Why did Amazon replace Just Walk Out with Dash Cart?
Dash Cart gave grocery shoppers a visible running total, promotions, savings and a more explicit way to handle produce and variable-weight goods. Amazon considered those features more suitable for large grocery baskets, even though independent testing found Just Walk Out faster in a small-basket comparison.
Why did Amazon close its Fresh and Go stores?
Amazon announced the closure of its physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores in January 2026, citing the lack of a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and scalable economics. That was a broader physical-retail decision, not proof that every Just Walk Out deployment failed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon abandoned Just Walk Out in most large-format Fresh stores in 2024 and closed its physical Fresh and Go formats in 2026. The technology remains active in third-party venues. It worked as specialized retail infrastructure, but not as Amazon’s universal grocery-store model.
