Amazon reorganized Wondery’s podcast operation in August 2025, with Reuters reporting that about 110 roles were affected. The change shifted audio-first narrative shows to Audible and put creator-led programming in a separate Wondery unit. Amazon said Wondery was not shutting down. By July 2026, the Wondery app and Wondery+ subscription had ended, but Amazon still described Wondery as a podcast studio.
What Amazon changed in August 2025
Amazon separated two kinds of podcast work: audio-first narrative series and creator-led programming. Reuters reported that narrative shows, including Business Wars, would move to Audible, while creator-led shows would be consolidated in a separate unit under Wondery. Reuters’ account, published August 4, 2025, also reported that Wondery CEO Jen Sargent would leave after a transition period.

Amazon told TechCrunch it was combining narrative podcast teams with Audible while continuing creator-led podcasts under Wondery. The company said the podcast landscape had changed, “particularly with the rise of video-forward, creator-led content.” That is Amazon’s explanation for the reorganization, not independent proof that this format shift caused the changes. TechCrunch reported Amazon’s statement on August 4, 2025.
How many employees were affected?
Reuters reported that about 110 employees were affected by the reorganization, based on a memo and an emailed Amazon statement. The report said many would transition to other Amazon teams. “About 110 roles affected” should not be read as 110 confirmed dismissals: the available reporting does not establish a final count of people who left the company rather than transferred.

Reuters also reported that an internal memo from Amazon vice president of audio, Twitch, and games Steve Boom said creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth, and monetization strategies from audio-first narrative series. That is the memo’s rationale as reported by Reuters, not independently validated market research.
Did Amazon shut down Wondery?
No. Amazon said in August 2025 that Wondery was not closing; it was changing how its podcast work was organized. The distinction is between the Wondery studio and brand, which continued with creator-led production, and the separate consumer product Wondery+.

Amazon’s Wondery information page, updated July 6, 2026, says the Wondery app and Wondery+ subscription are no longer available, while describing Wondery as a podcast studio known for creator-led shows. Amazon’s Wondery page establishes the app and subscription’s discontinued status; it does not say the studio itself closed.

Later activity showed Wondery-branded distribution continuing. On April 27, 2026, Amazon and Harpo Entertainment announced a multi-year agreement giving Wondery exclusive distribution and advertising rights for The Oprah Podcast across audio and video. Amazon’s announcement documents that deal. It demonstrates continued Wondery activity, but does not reveal the studio’s internal staffing levels or reporting lines.

Amazon’s October 2025 company-wide workforce update said it was “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and helping reduce bureaucracy.” That note described broader organizational changes and did not identify Wondery as the subject, so it should not be treated as the stated reason for the podcast reorganization. Beth Galetti’s October 28, 2025 update provides only general company context.

What is still unclear
- The available reporting does not give a final count of employees who left Amazon versus moved to other teams.
- Amazon’s July 2026 public page confirms Wondery continued as a studio, but does not establish whether its internal reporting structure remained exactly as announced in 2025.
- The cited sources do not provide an independently audited account of Wondery’s financial performance. Reuters reported that an internal memo said podcast revenue had quadrupled since Amazon acquired Wondery; this is a secondhand report of a memo, not a published audited metric.
