Amazon Products Are Reportedly Exploding and Catching Fire: What Buyers Should Know

Specific products sold through Amazon have faced fire and explosion warnings, but that does not establish a marketplace-wide hazard. Check the exact model against CPSC notices and follow the listed remedy.

Some specific products sold through Amazon have been subject to fire or explosion warnings and recalls. That does not show that Amazon products as a whole are unusually dangerous: Amazon is a sales channel, and the brand, seller, manufacturer and fulfillment arrangement can differ from one item to another. The practical step is to check the exact product against official recall notices and follow the remedy stated for that model.

What the reports and regulator findings actually show

There are documented hazards involving particular products, as well as a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) decision about Amazon’s responsibilities for certain third-party products. Neither establishes a marketplace-wide rate of fires or explosions.

The CPSC case involving Fulfilled by Amazon products

On July 30, 2024, the CPSC said it had unanimously found Amazon to be a distributor under the Consumer Product Safety Act for certain hazardous products sold by third-party sellers and fulfilled through Amazon’s Fulfilled by Amazon program. The product groups were faulty carbon monoxide detectors, hairdryers lacking electrocution protection and children’s sleepwear that violated federal flammability standards. The CPSC said more than 400,000 products were subject to the order, and found Amazon responsible for their recall. This was a decision about those specified products and Amazon’s role—not a finding that Amazon’s catalog generally is unsafe. Read the CPSC’s 2024 decision announcement.

What the final order required

In 2025, the CPSC described a final remediation order requiring Amazon to post CPSC recall releases on Amazon.com on the day they are published, email original purchasers, show information on purchasers’ Your Orders pages, keep releases on its recall page for at least five years and submit monthly progress reports for five years. Those are requirements of the CPSC order, not simply Amazon’s description of its own safety practices. See the CPSC’s final-order announcement.

Current product-specific warnings

CPSC notices are specific to a product and can change as new recalls are announced. Its live recall listings accessed October 8, 2026, included a warning dated September 17, 2026, that Hererod jump starters and power banks can have lithium-ion batteries that explode and ignite. The notice urges disposal under local hazardous-waste procedures. October 1, 2026 listings also covered rechargeable hand warmers whose batteries and electrical components can overheat and ignite, and portable camping showers whose immersion heaters can ignite when partly or completely out of water. For the hand warmers and showers, consumers are instructed to stop using affected units and contact the company for a refund. Check the individual notice for model identifiers and its exact remedy; these examples are not interchangeable, and their presence in CPSC listings does not by itself establish that every unit was sold through Amazon. Search CPSC recalls and safety notices.

How to check whether an Amazon purchase was recalled

  1. Identify the exact item. Find its make and model, and any serial number, batch or lot code. Check the product label and packaging; use your order history or receipt if you need to confirm the seller or purchase date.
  2. Search official notices. Search the CPSC recall database using the brand and model details. Match the product identifiers in the notice, not just a similar product name or photo.
  3. Check Amazon’s alert area. Sign in and look for “Your Recalls and Product Safety Alerts” or check the item in Your Orders. Amazon says it monitors listings, reviews potentially unsafe listings and provides a customer recall-alert page; these are Amazon’s descriptions of its process. The CPSC notice remains the primary source for the official hazard and remedy. See Amazon’s product safety information.
  4. Follow the exact notice. A remedy may require a return, refund, repair, destruction or special disposal. Do not assume one remedy applies to another product, or that an item should be thrown in household trash. Do not use, repair or give away a recalled item unless the notice specifically permits it.

What to do if a product overheats, smokes or catches fire

Prioritize immediate safety: move away from an active fire or smoke and contact local emergency services if needed. Do not risk injury trying to retrieve the product or handle a damaged battery. Once it is safe, stop using the item, preserve identifying details and check the CPSC notice for the product’s specific instructions. If the notice calls for hazardous-waste disposal, follow local procedures rather than placing the item in regular rubbish. A recall’s directions govern; do not improvise a repair or disposal method.

What the AmazonBasics review report does—and does not—mean

A September 29, 2020 Congressional Record passage recounted a CNN analysis of AmazonBasics customer reviews. It said that, since 2016, more than 1,500 reviews across more than 70 AmazonBasics items described products exploding, catching fire, smoking, melting, having electrical malfunctions or presenting other risks. This is a historical review-based report reproduced in a government record, not an official incident tally or a representative estimate of how often Amazon products fail. It does not establish that every report was verified or that the figure describes current products or Amazon’s entire marketplace. Read the Congressional Record passage.
