Amazon said in May 2025 that it had identified a “very small subset” of unresolved returns and was issuing refunds for them, including reported cases involving returns dating back to 2018. The company said it could not verify that the correct item had been sent back. That does not mean every old return qualifies—or establish that Amazon never physically received each parcel.
What Amazon said about the refunds
Amazon’s reported explanation was: “Following a recent internal review, we identified a very small subset of returns that were unresolved because we could not verify that the correct item had been sent back to us.” Amazon also said: “There is no action required from customers to receive the refunds, and we have fixed the payment issue and made process changes to more promptly contact customers about unresolved returns going forward.” 9to5Mac reported the statement in May 2025.
“Returns it never received” is shorthand used in coverage, not a confirmed description of every parcel’s physical path. Amazon’s wording concerned its inability to verify that the correct item had been returned. The company described the affected group only as a “very small subset”; no count of customers or returns was reported. A customer example involving a return from 2018 shows that some refunds related to old transactions, not that 2018 was the beginning of a company-wide issue or that all returns from that year are eligible. The Independent reported an example involving a 2018 return.
How this differs from Amazon’s usual refund process
Amazon’s current U.S. policy says a refund can take up to 30 days, depending on order type, return shipping, processing, and payment method. That policy describes the current process; it does not resolve what happened with a particular older return. See Amazon’s U.S. refund policy.

Refund after Amazon receives and processes a return
For a standard return, the refund follows receipt and processing. If more than 30 days have passed since you made a return and you have not received a refund notification, Amazon advises contacting Customer Service. Check the status in Your Returns.
Advance refund or replacement
An advance refund or replacement may be issued before the returned item is received. Amazon says it may charge the customer again if the return is not received within the return window; the charge is reversed after the item is received and processed. This is a different situation from a refund issued after processing. Amazon’s policy explains advance refunds and replacements.

Returns to Amazon and returns to third-party sellers
The return route matters. Amazon’s policy says a return for an item fulfilled by a third-party seller but shipped by the seller itself is sent to that seller, so the seller may be the party handling the return and refund. The process can therefore differ from a return handled by Amazon. Check the order and return details to identify the seller and fulfillment arrangement. Amazon’s seller-return guidance describes the process.
What to do if you are waiting for a refund
- Check the transaction: Open Amazon’s Your Returns area and review the return and refund status.
- Gather the records: Keep the order details, return or drop-off confirmation, tracking information, and relevant account notices. These can help Customer Service trace a specific return.
- Contact Amazon if the ordinary window has passed: Amazon advises contacting Customer Service when a return was made more than 30 days ago and no refund notification has arrived.
- Ask about the specific transaction: Explain when and how the item was returned and provide the available tracking or drop-off evidence. A reported late refund is not proof that every old return will be refunded.
How the refunds relate to the Amazon Return Policy Litigation
The refund reports and the litigation are related to return disputes, but they are not the same evidence. A court order recounts allegations that some customers received advanced refunds and were later charged again after Amazon treated returns as not received. Those are allegations described in the order, not findings that Amazon is liable. Read the cited court order.

The official Amazon Return Policy Litigation settlement website lists December 1, 2026 as the deadline to submit a claim, opt out, or object or comment, and March 16, 2027 as the final approval hearing. Settlement eligibility and procedures depend on the official terms; use that site for current instructions and check it again before acting because dates or terms may change. Secondary coverage reports a proposed class period of September 5, 2017 through February 12, 2026 for qualifying U.S. purchases, subject to the settlement terms and Amazon’s records; that range is not evidence that all customers with returns during those years are included. Court News Service reported the proposed class-period dates.
