When did the Federal Way Amazon Fresh close?
The store’s last day of business was June 22, 2025. It was located at The Commons, 1928 S. Commons in Federal Way, in a former Sears space. The store opened on August 11, 2022. GeekWire reported the closure and dates.
What does the filing say about affected workers?
GeekWire reported that a Washington State Employment Security Department filing listed 125 affected workers and an effective separation date of August 19, 2025. The 125 figure is attributed to the filing as described by GeekWire; it should not be read as a count of workers who were confirmed to lose their jobs on the store’s final business day.
Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch said the company was supporting employees through the transition and that they would have the opportunity to transfer to roles at nearby sites. Amazon did not describe the 125 workers as all being laid off on June 22.

Why did Amazon close the Federal Way location?
Amazon described the decision as specific to the store’s performance within its own portfolio. Buch said: “Certain store locations work better than others, and after an assessment of our offering we’ve decided to close our Amazon Fresh store in Federal Way.” The company also said it remained committed to grocery and would keep refining its store portfolio based on which locations and features resonated with customers. GeekWire published Amazon’s comments.
Amazon’s later companywide retreat from its Fresh and Go physical stores was announced in 2026, so it is subsequent context—not the stated reason for the June 2025 Federal Way closure.

How the closure fits Amazon’s later grocery strategy
In January 2026, Amazon announced plans to close almost all Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores. The Associated Press reported that most were scheduled to close February 1, while California locations would remain open longer to comply with state requirements. AP’s account of the January announcement describes that timing.
In a May 12, 2026 company update, Amazon reiterated its focus on grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market. Amazon said it generates over $150 billion in gross grocery sales and serves more than 150 million grocery customers each year; it also said grocery delivery is available in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns. These are company-reported figures, and delivery coverage varies by location. Amazon also said it plans more than 100 Whole Foods Market openings over the next few years; that is a forward-looking plan, not a completed store count. Amazon’s May 2026 update provides the company’s figures and strategy.

Explaining the broader decision, Amazon said: “While we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon-branded physical grocery stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion.” Its stated emphasis is now on online grocery access and Whole Foods Market rather than expanding the Amazon Fresh and Go store formats.
