If an Amazon driver ignores your delivery instructions, first check the order’s delivery photo and address, then report the specific shipment through Your Orders. Save the order number, delivery time, photo, and a screenshot of your saved instructions. Clear instructions can help, but Amazon says drivers follow them “as best as they’re able,” not as an unconditional guarantee.
Why a driver may not follow your instructions
Amazon’s delivery guidance allows customers to add free-text instructions, access codes, and preferred delivery locations. Amazon says drivers follow those instructions “as best as they’re able.” Amazon Flex’s policy tells delivery partners to “Follow reasonable customer delivery instructions,” while allowing them to decline instructions that are unreasonable or conflict with health, safety, or applicable law. That means a specific, safe request is useful, but it cannot guarantee a particular drop-off.
An address may be inaccessible, an access code may be missing, or a driver may have a safety concern—for example, a dog at the property. Amazon also lists three unsuccessful access attempts among reasons a package may be undeliverable. What to do when a package is left in the wrong place
- Open Your Orders. Select the affected order and verify the shipping address and delivery status.
- Review the delivery notice and photo. Compare the pictured location with the requested drop-off spot. Check whether a household member or neighbor accepted the package.
- Allow up to 48 hours if it was marked delivered early. Amazon notes that a parcel can sometimes be scanned as delivered before it arrives.
- Keep the evidence together. Record the order number, delivery time, exact location, delivery photo, and a screenshot of the instruction saved for that order.
- Contact Amazon if the parcel is still missing. For an Amazon-shipped order, Amazon says to contact Customer Service within 30 days of the expected delivery date. How to make delivery instructions clearer
Use a short, direct instruction that identifies one safe and accessible location. Include any necessary access information and relevant hazards. For example: “Place inside the covered porch cabinet beside the blue door; do not leave on the sidewalk.” Avoid vague requests such as “leave somewhere safe.”

Update the instructions in your Amazon address settings for future orders, or add them at checkout. Keep a screenshot of the saved wording so you can show what was in place if a delivery goes wrong.
Where to escalate, based on who shipped the order

If the problem keeps happening
When you contact support, give the agent the dates and order numbers for the affected deliveries, explain where each parcel was left, and provide the delivery photos and instruction screenshots. Ask the agent to document the delivery preference and investigate the route or carrier. Keep the request focused on a safe, specific drop-off location that is accessible to the driver.

A lock box may be a practical optional workaround if it suits your property and delivery setup, but it does not make a driver follow instructions and is not a remedy established by Amazon’s guidance. Do not confront a driver or publish personal details. If conduct appears threatening or criminal, preserve the evidence and contact appropriate local emergency or law-enforcement services as well as Amazon support; the Amazon guidance cited here does not identify a specialized driver-misconduct hotline.
