On April 29, 2025, Amazon said it had not approved a proposal to show tariff costs beside product prices on its main retail site. The idea had been considered by the team behind Amazon Haul, its low-cost storefront, but Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle said it was never approved and “is not going to happen.”
What Amazon said about tariff price labels
The clarification followed a Punchbowl News report on April 29, 2025, that Amazon planned to show how much of a product’s price was attributable to tariffs. The Associated Press said the report relied on an anonymous source familiar with the matter. Amazon then narrowed the account: Doyle told the AP that only the Amazon Haul team had considered listing import charges on certain products.
Doyle described Haul as Amazon’s recently launched, low-cost storefront. He said the idea “was never approved and is not going to happen.” Scripps News reported that the proposal would not affect Amazon’s main site or other Amazon properties. In other words, the episode concerned an internal idea for Haul—not an approved feature or a settled plan for Amazon’s broader retail site.
Why the White House objected
Before Amazon clarified the proposal’s scope, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the reported plan “a hostile and political act” and questioned why Amazon had not shown price effects during the Biden administration. The AP reported that the reaction appeared to be based on a misinterpretation of internal plans rather than a final Amazon decision. That is the AP’s characterization; the contemporaneous reports do not independently establish the administration’s motive.

Axios placed the Haul discussion against a changing backdrop for tariffs and import charges on low-cost goods. The reports from April 2025 do not establish what tariff rules apply today, so they should not be treated as a guide to current import costs.
What consumers said about seeing tariff costs
Scripps News reported results from a survey conducted by Krista Li, a marketing professor at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. The report said about half of respondents supported Amazon displaying tariff costs, 14% opposed it, and 37% wanted the option to choose whether to see a breakdown. It also reported that 52% said they would seek alternative products with lower or no tariffs, while more than 60% said price transparency would make them trust Amazon more.
