Amazon launched it in the United States on October 19, 2023, as a way to ask selected friends or family members to react to products and leave comments. Amazon says the feature ended on September 3, 2025, so instructions showing an active “Ask for your friends’ votes” control are now historical.
What Consult-a-Friend did
Consult-a-Friend was a lightweight social-shopping layer inside Amazon’s mobile shopping experience. Instead of sending a product link through several separate conversations and trying to remember everyone’s opinion, a shopper could request feedback from chosen contacts and view the responses together.

Amazon described recommendations from friends and family as trusted input and positioned the feature for subjective purchase decisions. It was not an ordinary public review system: feedback came from people the shopper invited, not from the general population of Amazon customers.

How it worked before discontinuation
The following is the former workflow, not a current set of usable instructions.
- Open a product in the Amazon Shopping app.
- Tap the product page’s Share button.
- For first-time users, turn on Ask for your friends’ votes.
- Choose a messaging app and select the people to contact.
- Recipients open the Consult-a-Friend link and view the product details.
- Each recipient chooses an emoji reaction: a positive reaction such as 😍, a negative reaction shown as ☹️ or 🙁 depending on the regional presentation, or an uncertain reaction such as 🤔.
- Recipients can add written commentary.
- The shopper views combined sentiment and individual comments in the Amazon Shopping app.
The available Amazon announcement directed recipients into the Amazon Shopping app, but it does not fully specify account, login, or app-installation requirements for every country, device, or recipient scenario. It is therefore not accurate to promise that every recipient could vote without an Amazon account or that every recipient universally needed Prime membership.
What shoppers used it for
Amazon said early testing showed particular interest in apparel, shoes, electronics, and furniture. Those were examples of observed or anticipated use, not a complete list of supported categories.
Subjective purchases
Friends could help answer questions such as which color looked best, which outfit suited the shopper, or which sofa fit a room. Their familiarity with the buyer’s preferences was often more useful for those questions than a generic star rating.

Group gifts
Amazon highlighted group gift-buying, such as asking siblings to weigh in on a television or another difficult-to-select present. A shared response flow could reduce duplicated messages when several people were contributing.
Where it was tested
Amazon tested or launched Consult-a-Friend in multiple markets, including the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, according to its U.S. announcement. Regional announcements did not always list the same countries, so availability was not universal or identical across marketplaces.
Consult-a-Friend versus ordinary Amazon sharing
The feature used Amazon’s existing sharing entry point but added a structured feedback layer.

Amazon said customers had already used the Share button billions of times in 2023; that figure was Amazon’s own reported usage, not an independently audited measurement. Consult-a-Friend was an enhancement to that sharing behavior, not the name of Amazon’s general Share button.

Why it could help—and where it fell short
Potential advantages
- Faster informal polling of several people.
- Less copying and pasting of the same product link.
- Comments and reactions tied to one product.
- Useful input for taste-sensitive purchases and group gifts.
- A way to involve people who know the shopper’s preferences.
Important limitations
- It depended on friends responding.
- Three emoji choices conveyed less nuance than a detailed comparison.
- Friends might judge an image or style rather than durability, fit, safety, or technical performance.
- Responses could reflect the friend’s taste rather than the buyer’s needs.
- Links, app behavior, and product availability could vary by country, account, device, and listing.
- A majority vote did not establish that a product was the safest, best-performing, or best value.
For electrical safety, medical devices, compatibility, warranties, returns, durability, and long-term reliability, independent specifications, safety information, and detailed reviews remained necessary. A product listing could also change in price, seller, configuration, stock, or delivery estimate after friends responded.
Why did Amazon end it?
Amazon says Consult-a-Friend was no longer available as of September 3, 2025. Amazon’s cited announcement confirms the date but does not provide a public explanation for the shutdown. There is no verified basis in that announcement to say that low adoption, privacy concerns, cost, or a particular replacement caused the decision.
Amazon’s UK and Japan pages carry the same end-of-service date: UK announcement and Japan announcement.
What to use instead
No current Amazon feature documented in these sources recreates the exact “ask selected friends to vote” workflow. You can reproduce most of the practical benefit with ordinary tools:

- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
- Use Amazon’s normal Share control to send the same product link to a group chat.
- Ask everyone to assess the same criteria—for example, appearance, size, compatibility, price, and gift suitability.
- Request a short reason, not only a yes/no reaction.
- Check the listing yourself for seller, price, delivery estimate, specifications, reviews, returns, and warranty information.
- For a group gift, record the final choice and budget in a shared list or document.
Amazon’s current research-oriented tools
Amazon announced AI Shopping Guides for U.S. customers in the Amazon Shopping app and mobile website, initially covering more than 100 product types. These guides help with category research; they do not collect votes from friends.
Amazon also said that Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026, with shopping-assistant functionality available through the Amazon Shopping app and other Amazon surfaces. See Amazon’s 2026 shopping-assistant announcement. Alexa for Shopping is a conversational research tool, not a confirmed replacement for Consult-a-Friend.
What not to install
Be cautious with browser extensions or third-party services claiming to restore Consult-a-Friend, especially those requesting Amazon credentials. Amazon has not documented an official restoration path in the cited material.

Was it a real Amazon feature?
Yes. Amazon announced it on October 19, 2023 as a mobile Amazon Shopping experience for requesting friends’ reactions and comments.
Did friends need an Amazon account?
The documented flow sent recipients into the Amazon Shopping app, but Amazon did not specify every account, login, or installation requirement for all recipient situations. Do not assume a universal answer.
Was it available worldwide?
No. Amazon tested or launched it in selected markets, and regional announcements listed different country sets.
Can ordinary Amazon sharing still be used?
Ordinary product sharing is separate from Consult-a-Friend. It can send a product link, but it does not restore the former in-app voting and comment aggregation.

Amazon presents Alexa for Shopping as a current shopping assistant, but it is not a social voting system and has not been identified by Amazon as a direct replacement.
